Should I Do The EdD or PhD?

In this video I explain my reasoning for pursuing the EdD as opposed to a PhD. I'm early enough in my program to change but I think I'm happy with the EdD based on what I want to do throughout my career. I'm curious to hear from others that have done either an EdD or PhD and what your thoughts were going into it and if you had any regrets afterwards.

I personally like the EdD. Neither is more significant than the other in terms of respect. However, the EdD being more of the practitioner degree, you learn to be a researcher (qual, quant, mixed, action, etc) and to do improvement science. The EdD is more inclusive in my opinion. PhDs have to learn to do practitioner work after school. I feel the most knowledge bang for your buck is in the EdD. Pertaining to administration positions, the EdDs are more equipped for those. More and more college presidents now have EdDs and JDs. Publishing and faculty instruction is also still doable. The EdD/PhD debate is biased at the core. Harvard created the 1st EdD due to the need for practitioners because PhDs dont know how to do the EdD work. A good EdD program is going to teach you to do the PhD research and apply the research to practice. Respectfully, PhDs and EdDs should be partners for each has it's own roles by which one practice informs the other collaboratively. I too say, do or stick with whichever program gives you what you are looking for out of it for either is the entry into the other or broader work. However, speaking with unbias, I favor the EdD.

I appreciate the comment and agree with you! I have 9 years of full time practitioner experience in my field now so it was def. more important to me to get the EdD than the extra credits for the PhD.

I chose the EdD because I want to remain at the practitioner level but also teach at the university level as well. Be warned, however, that many universities (The Citadel for example) will not accept the EdD for faculty, even adjunct positions. Other EdD programs are moving to more research (PhD-like) for the dissertation versus project based research. Blessings! You're gonna do great!

I had missed this comment when you first posted but wanted to say thank you for the thoughtful comment and the encouragement! I have had this conversation with a few folks before committing to the EdD. For what I plan to do I think the EdD was the right decision having a masters in athletic administration already.

The idea is that one is a “practitioner” degree versus a research degree. PhD has a more notable sound.

I'm glad I found this video as I'm trying to decide between the two right now. I'm curious about what book you're referring to at 5:05. I'm looking towards moving into the accreditation side of higher ed, so I enjoyed your conversation.

Thanks, David. I think the biggest factor for me was whether I wanted to be a professor and do PhD or stay in administration and do EdD (which I am doing). None, waste time, a degree don’t mean anything nowadays. Save your money. Telling you the truth.

The time one is definitely a conflict I’m considering moving forward. It’s limiting other ways I’d like to use my time for my career. But the cost isn’t actually anything for me since I work at the university. If I didn’t get the employee tuition benefit I definitely would not be in another degree program.

You know what is really a waste of time? Telling someone else that what they want to accomplish is a waste of time. We all have different paths that we choose. You just wasted your time by telling someone else that what they are doing is a waste of time.

@@-g.k.4389 it’s not a waste of time. Time was spent to answer the question asked with an honest answer. Time would be wasted if question was not answered, because that was the purpose after watching the video.

@@jjc6530 The question wasn't answered. You just gave an opinion based on your perspective. A degree might mean nothing to your path, but each person is going a different route in life. So your "answer" really wasn't one.
