I usually clean up going in with cubase' default, 4 band eq (high pass pre, then clean up boxiness and resonance), compress that then tweak with smartEQ if I need to get surgical. I know for sure my recordings have issues because of it's a commercial building with very basic treatment and an HVAC that may come on sometime during the night. Great channel. You hit all the topics I'm always looking for.

My thought process is, compression is going to boost everything up and put it in your face. So if you have boominess, or muddiness, or siblance, if you use compression first, you're BOOSTING all those bad noises. Then you're going to have to push the EQ even harder afterward to attenuate all those bad frequencies you just boosted with the compressor. I figure, in an ideal world, in the perfect environment with the perfect microphone the audio goes into your session with a perfect signal right. all the frequencies are just sitting perfectly then you wouldn't even need eq and de-essing, and all you gotta do is compress to get your dynamics where you want them. Since we're not in a perfect world, EQing and Deessing to me is like, creating that natural perfection we would all hope for in a perfect world. Signal comes in, and you want to clean it up and make the signal as perfect as you can before anything else, then you stuff it into the compressor and with the signal all cleaned up, you're now boosting a clean signal and making the good stuff louder. So I do kind of a pyramid chain. De-Ess>EQ>Compress>EQ>De-Ess just like that. First de-ess, JUST to clean the signal. Then REDUCTIVE EQ, again JUST to clean the signal. Those two are just maintenance. You're not adding sugar and spice, you're just removing that nasty so it doesn't get boosted. THEN compression to bring everything out and in your face. NOW, you're adding the sugar and spice, now that the vocal is sitting up front, now you can do ADDITIVE EQ, bring in a little clarity and some sweeteners. Now that you've added that clarity to the signal, finally you can throw on another de-esser to catch those stray hairs you brought out with your additive EQ. So, in summation: 1: Push down the bad, 2: bring everything up to level, 3: Pull up the good, 4: Catch and suppress the stray hairs.

Why not a low end roll off and low frequency cut, then the compressor, then another EQ for everything else?

So, I noticed that you didn't use an AUX track and applied your compressor and EQ on that. Is that a typical set up for vocals? You apply those plugins right on the vocal tracks themselves?

The famous chicken/egg question... That's one if the easiest "problems" ever... It's the egg; THE EGG CAME FIRST! The chicken probably evolved from some type of reptile, and... _that reptile would have laid eggs._ You dig? _Whatever_ chickens evolved from, that animal laid _eggs._ Simple. EQ/compression? Not so simple...
@Rck-vert

Technically the chicken came first, at least from a biblical perspective as god created all animals
