"In the second part of his interview with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, CBS News’ Charlie Rose attempted to ascertain whether Hamas’ goal was to actually defeat Israel militarily, an aim that seems unrealistic given the disparity between the two forces. Meshaal insisted that history had always been against what he called “occupiers” in the end, citing the American Revolution.
“The world has two choices,” Meshaal said. “They need to help us peacefully reach this state or we will expel this occupation from our land.”
“So unless the world will take the Israelis out of the West Bank and Gaza, you will expel them militarily,” Rose said. “That’s your objective. You believe you can do that?”"* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Khaled Meshaal can't say Hamas would recognize the state of Israel, because he's not a U.S. politician and can't handle the cognitive dissonance of expressing contradictory statements. When Hamas says 'occupation' they don't mean Gaza or the West Bank, they mean the state of israel. For Hamas, 'occupation' is Jewish control of a territory larger than a small town, in the region between Syria/Lebanon and the red sea. So Khaled Meshaal can't say that the state of Israel would even be recognized after establishing a Palestinian state, because Hamas' view of ending the occupation and establishing a state, is ending the existence of Israel and establishing Palestine in it's place. Like every nation who fought for it's independence, Israel celebrates that day every year. Many Palestinians mourn on the same date, for the same reason (look up 'Nakba').

Cenk missed some key points and lied about others, as usual. He fails to make the distinction between recognizing Israel and recognizing Israel as a Jewish State. The latter of course implies an apartheid like state where Jews enjoy a privileged placed in society. Hamas has not existed for 47 years, as he claims. The Jews have no right to occupy Gaza, or use military force against it's citizens. The citizens of Gaza have every right to resist occupation by force, both legally and morally. Who is Cenk to tell the people of Gaza they should not fight?

Will C Get the facts straight --- Israel doesn't occupy Gaza. When Hamas talks about "occupation" they mean the land that is presently Israeli. The bullshit about apartheid also goes against the truth. There are non-Jews in all walks of Israeli life, including government. There are Christians, Druzes, Beduins, and even Muslims in the Israeli Defense Forces.

Will C I know what you are saying, but then again it is a pretty clear defeat. He's right in the fact that the Jews are there now, and they wont go anywhere unless they are forced, and the Palestinians have tried and are clearly not capable as they are untrained and under-equipped. They should make a deal with the Israelis and end the blood shed.

Tom jackson The issue is not training or equipment but that the Fakistinian cause is fraudulent. The basic inability of the Arabs to be honest with themselves about many things is fundamental to the challenges their culture faces, and this is also why they are fixated on "getting" a country of eight million people, the size of New Hampshire, rather than working their problems out.

Ethan Farber The issue is training and equipment, if Palestine and Israel swapped places Palestine would most likely whoop Israel's ass. The USA helped Israel get settled and gave them weapons to fight of the Syrians and the Iraqis. Point is the country with the biggest stick, or biggest allies, always wins over under equipped, under-trained civilians. The only reason Israel is powerful in the first place is because the USA allowed it.

Nobody should recognize Israel as a "jewish state". That's a fundamentally racist concept. Nor should anyone recognize the right of Israel to exist. Does anyone recognize the "right" of, say Sweden, to exist? Of course not. You can recognize the territorial integrity of the people who live there, but states don't have rights, much less the right to exist. Why doesn't anyone ask Israel if Palestine has a right to exist? They'd be laughed at.

It's not racist, it's reality, and Israel is the most secular state in the Middle East, with over 20% of the population being Muslim and many others being atheist and of course, jewish. Israel is just a haven for jews to escape persecution, which was deemed necessary after the Holocaust and centuries of persecution before that.

That's the main reason why there is still a conflict. Moreover there are more Jews that were expelled from Arab countries (without ever getting the refugee status) that Palestinians (some having fled and some having been expelled) having been refugees in 1948.

Hamas is saying that AS A RESULT of the oppression at the hands of Israel. Get a clue. If someone kept you prisoner for decades and killed off your family, relatives, neighborhoods, you'd be pretty mad too. It only brews hatred. Israel needs to back down first. Recognize Palestine's right to exist as a nation not occupied territory.

Cenk doesn't get it. Hamas believes Tel Aviv is also occupied. Hamas believes Haifa and Jerusalem are Muslim cities where no Jews should live. Hamas believes Hebron is occupied, despite majority of Arabs live in that Jewish city. Hamas thinks EVERY Jew in Israel is one too many because even the children and women civilians are occupiers. That's why he's giving these vague answers. And he wants a Palestinian state first with the 1967 borders, so that he can fight and crush the rest of Israel from there.

The people in Gaza are NOT Palestinian, they're Arabs who moved there recently. The hard no clue what a Palestian was until the 60's. The Palestinians has always been Jews which have lived in Israel (Judea /Samaria) for 3000! Meshaal said dont ask him about future plans in regard to recognizing an Israeli state, he says leave it up to the Palestinian people to do that after they get a state. The Palestinian majority would not want to live next to an Israeli state and would be happy to continue the Jihad until judgement day. That is the root of the problem, not Meshaals honesty, not his refusal to dodge questions like Cenk would.

TYT guy does not understand Hamas at all. Hamas does not resist the occupation of 1967. Hamas resists the occupation of 1948. Hamas stated in every possible occasion they will never stop fighting until every inch of Israel is under Islamic control. How many times do they have to say it until you understand - it is not about what you call the occupied territories, but what they call the occupied territories, which is Israel in its entirety. Not very complicated at all.

The whole miscommunication here is that the head of the Hamas Jihad is talking about "occupation" he means ALL of Israel including places such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. But Rosen is only talking about Gaza and the disputed territories.

Building homes for Israeli citizens on disputed land is NOT state violence. If the 2 sides would come to an agreement regarding the disputed land and were one side to then violate that agreement, then you have state violence. But the ONLY legal owner of the west bank was Israel. It is called West Bank because the Western side of the Jordan was occupied by Jordan. The land, under the Mandate for Palestine, was clearly defined as belonging to the Jews. The fact that Arab states refused every partition plan and attacked Israel in '48 and the signed an Armistice agreement WHICH CLEARLY STATES, at the insistence of the Arab states, that the armistice line is NOT a border can't be retroactively declared as some state of Palestine which never existed.

Ret1173 Then we shouldn't complain about Crimea in Ukraine either, then one day if Israel is attacked and they lose land it's too bad for them. We are not animals, Israel should go back to its borders if they want peace in the long run. Also the Arab "armies" that attacked weren't trained at all it was full of civilians that enlisted to defend the Palestinians, they barely had to fight. (Didn't they call one of them the 6 days war, lol).

As for the first Arab-Israeli war you forget that the pressure came from a part of the Arab population, not the leadership and that's why they had more civilians than trained soldiers (ironically Middle-East was peaceful and didn't need having armies), and it was mainly a reaction to massacres by the Israelis such as : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Irgun_attacks#List_of_Irgun_attacks_1937-1948 They were outnumbered, their organization was awful, the IDF had superior equipment and they still went to fight. Granted it was a small war with only around 3k deaths from each sides but still, maybe it was stupidity maybe it was bravery. But anyway, this is 2014 we have to evolve and leave the conquest and violent bullshit behind us. Israel has the right to exist just like Palestine does, Israelis should go back to their borders and stop killing civilians in the West Bank and Hamas should stop firing blind rockets from Gaza.

Instead of living in peace, Isreal then began its occupation, taking of Palastinian homes, a campagne of murder is ongoing and has been for decades. ...Yes, Isreal does exist but it does not have the right to and never will. It was an illegal process. It was an idea hatched in 1895 by Herzl, father of Zionism. It was the idea to move out the native population from the Zionist state. It was implemented in 1948 by the father of Israel, Ben-Gurion. It was an ethnic cleansing where Palestinians were murdered, tortured, stoned, and that including children. However, Israel is powerful and you won't get them to accept the UN agreement. Some day, BDS may force Israel to accept a two state solution but not so far.

Instead of living in peace, Israel then began its occupation? The arabs living in this area denied Israel's right to exist and attacked! They said they want to throw the jews into the sea! Israel wanted to live in peace, but the arabs, in 1948, declared a war against the jews living there. And that was one hell one a war, between 1%-10% of the Israeli population was murdered. Israel has more right to exist then Palestine. You know why? because Palestine could have started to build a country. But instead, they chose war. Over, and over again.

You're full of shit. Israel was far more compliant with the Oslo accords than Palestine. Israel gave about 50% of Palestine to the PLO. Did Israel get the peace in return that it asked for? No. More Israelis died in terror attacks in the 5 years following the Oslo accords than in the previous 15.

Israel gave back all of Gaza and 40-some percent of the west bank, in compliance with the Oslo accords, only to get more suicide bombings in return. Israel wasn't perfect, it expanded settlements which weren't directly against Oslo accords, but are in poor spirit of them, Palestine didn't even try to comply with Oslo. That's why there are more settlements.

The problem with this video is that your suggestion of non-violence will not work. Israel has no interest in a two-state solution. The only two solutions are occupation until Palestine is completely absorbed by Israel or an armed resistance. Israel is very powerful, but not immortal. I don't endorse Hamas or its actions; but to suggest non-violence has any chance of succeeding is an insult to the intellect of Palestinians.

No one questions the legitimacy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, created as Israel also in 1947 from a British colony, occupying India territories and expelling millions of hindus from their homes and lands. ¿Islamic Pakistan yes but Jewish Israel no?.

As far as bad strategy goes, let's not forget that Hamas made a very bad mistake by alienating the Egyptian military. The tunnels to and from Egypt that had been allowed to operate freely were shut down after an attack from Gaza on Egyptian soldiers. Wouldn't a more open border with Egypt have gone a long way to easing the siege?

Hamas refuses to recognize what they call the legitimacy of the state of Israel, but under International law they are not obliged to recognize the legitimacy of the state of Israel. If you go back to 1947, Ghandi said: "Pakistan is a reality which I am forced to live with, but I will never recognize its legitimacy." and that is the same position of Hamas. Hamas is not expected to be held to a higher level of diplomacy than Ghandi. Hamas has repeatedly said that they are willing to settle the conflict on the pre-June 1967 border, but Israel does not want peace or to end the occupation that is why the conflict has not been settled yet, not because of Hamas. If that were the case then why didn't Israel solve the conflict before Hamas was elected into office in 2006? Hmm, think about that. Moreover, there is a basic principle of International law which is called reciprocity, if you apply law to one side it is called Hypocrisy. If you apply it to both sides it is called a moral statement. So let's look at this, most people say that the problem is that Hamas is unwilling to recognize the state of Israel. Now, can you name one Israeli government official or political party which has ever recognized a Palestinian State within its internationally legal borders? Namely, all of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem as its capital. That's the law !

I'm really tired when people blame the Palestinians for fighting for their freedom. Anybody in this world would do the same thing if their land was stolen and occupied by someone else. The asnwer should have been that it should exist as all modern Western democracies - as a secular state with equal rights - not as an expansive ethnostate. Certainly Israel has pushed for secular states with open borders in America and Europe so we should support the same solution for Israel. Do they ask Israel to acknowledge the right of Palestinians to exist with their own state? No. So why do Palestinians have to acknowledge Israel's right to exist as an ethnostate. Many Israeli policians openly say that all of Palestine belongs to only Jews including Greater Israel - which includes alll of Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and part of Iran. Charlie Rose made his question perfectly clear. IF the Israelis allow a peaceful solution, if they meet your terms, THEN will you allow them to exist afterwards? The appropriate answer is not, by any stretch of the imagination, "We can't say because we don't know whether they will allow a peaceful solution or not." That is blatantly avoiding the question. Not because he is afraid of appearing weak in the negotiation process, because he could not even THINK that evasion helps him there. What he is afraid of is appearing weak before his people, whom he believes want Israel gone. What he is avoiding saying is the truth, that the ideology Hamas represents today will never recognize Israel's right to exist under any circumstances, just as Palestine has proved again and again in the past, by meeting Israel's concessions with more violence for NO REASON. They have always been the aggressors, and many of their representatives and allies have explicitly denounced Israel's right to exist repeatedly in recent history. Giving them the blind benefit of the doubt in this interview is utterly ridiculous.

I think the real point of his answer was missed. Charlie Rose's question was, "Do you accept Israel as a Jewish state?". The answer can't be 'yes' or it would preclude the right of Palestinian Arabs to return to their lands inside Israel, OR it would give tacit approval for Israel to be governed as an apartheid state. Personally I'm shocked at the world's acceptance that Israel is allowed to be the ONE 'western-style' democracy that discriminates against all religions except one. I think it's a holocaust guilt thing because not since Nazi Germany have specific religions been weeded out of the political system so publicly.

If he said the Third Reich shouldn't exist, would that make the Pole unreasonable, genocidal, and the cause of the Nazi occupation?

A GOOD SOLUTION: The Palestinians need to be given full citizenship: land rights, voting rights, the right to have businesses and they need to legally become part of Israel. Israel also needs to pay reparations to the Palestinians. If the Palestinian population wants to maintain their culture that is fine. Some could choose to become internal geographic areas, while maintaining citizenship. As citizens there needs to be a Bill of Rights specifically written for the Palestinians since they would rightly be suspicious of the type of citizenship offered. There is no way Palestine could become its own state since it has no access to the sea for trade, is surrounded and splintered. The UN should insure them their Bill of Rights just as they did Israel. In time Gaza would see the advantages of citizenship and join.
