Charities are hobbled by public habits, outdated prejudices and arbitrary guidelines. It’s time to reimagine nonprofits and let them get back to making our world a better place to live, work, and play.
denise rose, who has not capitalized her name since the 7th grade, is the Executive Director of Hamilton Players, a local nonprofit community theater. She is also the owner of Rose Grant Works and Consulting. denise has worn many hats in her lifetime. She worked as a massage therapist, a line cook, a trail guide, a lab tech at the University of Washington - Department of Pharmaceutics in the Regional Primate Research Center, and a lodge hostess/fish processor/deckhand in Alaska.
In addition to her work history, denise has volunteered with many nonprofits over the past 20+ years. In 2018, denise received a professional certificate in nonprofit management, followed by her Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Montana. Yes they can make money, obviously it’s needed. The question is why are the staff so low paid that they qualify for services themselves like food stamps … let’s follow the money in nonprofit- let’s face it we won’t be surprised where the money really goes

Because most grant funders do not allow for business overhead to be part of the expense. They only want funds to go directly to the program, and nonprofits must look elsewhere to find money to pay staff and monthly expenses (such as rent). Most nonprofits are small scale, like ours. The stories of poor fiscal management in paying employees but executives being overpaid is rarely a story from a small nonprofit.

Non-profits should not make profits. Making money and making profits are two different things.

For some reason I have found my most joy and my most heartache work for non-profits. In my early 20s I needed a number of non-profits to take care of my 2 little ones and survive. Today I'm well educated and continue to work for non-profit organization. I stay on a close budget and my needs are met. But, there are 2 incomes in this house. I have coworkers who are single with children that receive food stamps and are on Medicaid. I know teachers who are single in our county who also are on food stamps and receive Medicaid. Why should highly educated people still need to live in poverty to give back to our most vulnerable of the community? I love this TedTalk.

Simply put yes. A portion of the revenue should be put back into the nonprofit’s pockets to supply there own personal needs to keep the non profit going

Non-profits and not-for-profits are too often big scams. Their balance sheets may balance out income and expenses, but there are often people who are raking lots of cash. These people often include high-ranking executives and members of the boards of directors. Too often, these people make sure they get top salaries and bonuses before any money goes to projects or programs.

Non profits must reinvest all income. They should also all do annual audits to prevent fraud.

I dont know that this speech reaches the fundamentals. Nonprofit orgs operate in a "largely capitalist" system but the choices of how each part of the organisation (including each employee) decides to spend money rests with the individual. We need to educate people to be eco minimalist in their use of money. This includes looking at the world's major problems, such as overpopulation and climate breakdown, and serving to address them. I have done several videos on this.

Organisations in the arts, sports and recreation which directly compete with small businesses are creating a industry decline as it makes a uneven competitive advantage, in Australia it seems to be if you are an Arts organisation or school, your businesses model is based upon receiving government grants and funding. Small businesses and schools can't compete with these funded organisations who then deem themselves the peak industry body as they are funded by government department.

Given the state of our world, non-profit seems to be the most ethical business model. I firmly believe that businesses should exist for positively impacting society, not for just making money for few investors. Non-profits are showing the way. The only problem with for-profit businesses I have (especially when they serve fundamental human needs) is that they are conditional. No poor person can afford their services. So even if they claim to be doing service to society, only those who can afford can enjoy. No money, no product/service. Non-profits, on the other hand are more accessible. There is no distinction made between those who have and those who don't have money. Everyone can enjoy, and those who have can give *as per their will*. The best thing. I am looking forward to a world in which non-profit is the default business model used by the majority of businesses. Non-profits being funded by public, will work for public. For-profits being funded by shareholders, continue to work for maximising their profit- by hook or crook.

Um, the non-profit homeless shelter that I volunteered for lined their pockets with donations, and now years later the homeless shelter is pretty much vacant because they were caught and burned the bridges for any charity money. The city had to take over and is in the process of managing the shelter.

This is a good talk. It probably would've been most convincing if the rampant fraud were acknowledged and it offered ways to reform non-profits with elimination of fraud in mind. That's what the required registration is about.

I stopped donating to United Way Years Ago when i found the top person in charge got 400,000.00 a year! It was deducted before profits!

Even though the “Top person” made this happen in a year?? ➡️ $33.3 million (37%) was given to organizations outside the US, $3.9 million (5%) was given to organizations in the US, and $9.1 million (10%) stayed within the organization, $7.7 million (9%) was paid to consultants (undefined). $4.4 million (5%) was spent on travel, conferences, conventions, speakers, meals. $4.4 million (5%) was spent on office expenses, occupancy, legal, accounting, insurance, IT, fees, and temp staff. $2.6 (3%) million in miscellaneous expenses and depreciation (a non-cash expense). You stopped donating to all of that because you thought the “top person” shouldn’t be paid for making it happen?? You would rather them not be compensated & just volunteer they’re experience, knowledge, education & hard work & earn nothing & require the assistance they provide??

I work at a non-profit. We are heavily scrutinized and are audited every year. Each one of us still has all our vacation and sick days left untouched. We put in 16-hour days, weekends, and holidays. I love my job and I am passionate about our mission. But we need to be able to make more money as well so we can have a competitive wage in order to do more good work and be able to start a family too.
