The issue i see with the locking design is more moving parts = more points of failure. The simple yet sturdy design might be the right way to go for these. Great tool, though! Would definitely like to see these "imported" to western countries
@jonathanbowen3640 Жыл бұрын
Simple hinges are hardly going to be likely points of failure. Super easy to make his device. If you can't make a hinge may as well just give up.
@LynxxXVI11 ай бұрын
@@jonathanbowen3640air enough, but a non-locking design is better for another reason. If you thrust with one that locks, miss, and it is bumped or deploys when you pull back on your thrust, it is now locked closed with your target not inside. If it didn't lock, a simple thrust would reopen it. It would stay closed as long as you apply constant pressure to your target anyway, no need for a lock.
@N8crafter11 ай бұрын
@@LynxxXVI this would make it effectively as useful as the unmodified version; the point of the locking mechanism is to prevent the target from relieving pressure on themselves by pushing back

The grasping mechanism could probaby be upgraded to provide greater control with a spring loaded ratcheting mechanism. This would let you close it further, and if you have some sort of trigger the springs could allow it to snap open if they force it closed.

Addressing several of the poor responses in this comment section. Q1: "What if he throws the knife?" R1: Good, the perp disarmed himself and unless he's a ninja the responders haven't taken anything more than a flesh wound in exchange. Thrown knives don't work like they do in videogames. Q2: "But using one is ineffective!" R2: Cops should always be travelling in pairs anyway, and 2+ is effective enough to subdue almost anyone. Q3: "but they look easy to avoid! I could stop those! Can't I just step aside?" R3: Congratulations you're the kind of person that'd get caught by a mancatcher. Their materials are light and can be quickly and easily repositioned by the wielder faster than you can move your whole torso, especially trained wielders. Q4: "What stops the attacker from overpowering me and taking the weapon?" R4: The second guy with a mancatcher. Also if you're in a situation where you are deploying these, then the light, awkward aluminium pole is probably the least dangerous thing the assailant will be attacking you with. Q5: "They look unwieldy and intimidating!" R5: So is your obese undertrained police cosplaying as soldiers and carrying long guns. Q6: "What if the perp runs away!?" R6: If they're running away, they're probably not attacking people. Also nothing about the 3 lb aluminium pole would prevent you from sprinting after the perp or safely dropping it once it becomes an obstacle to pursuit. Q7: "What if the perp has a gun!?" R7: Respond accordingly if a gun threat presents itself. If you believe your police should treat every encounter like the perp has a gun in advance, you're probably living in a country with incredibly cancerous gun-culture and/or police culture. Q8: "That thing can't overpower me!" R8: See R4, also mancatchers give the user incredible leverage against their target, to the point that it's a viable restraint against someone of superior mass and strength, provided training. Q9: "What stops the perp from swinging the knife/weapon when they're pinned!?" R9: Mancatchers can bind limbs, they don't exclusively work on torsos. Q10: "Why should we take extra risks to help violent thugs!?" R10: Because the police's job is to protect the public, not shoot "bad guys". misunderstandings, bad days, mental disabilities, and intoxication exist. Most people that can become belligerent or a threat to their self and others are often doing so under temporary conditions, they weren't born with a ski-mask and an evil mustache to twirl. Mancatchers offer a chance to minimalize fatal incidents with people that need to be restrained in the moment without undue injury and death. Q11: "This would never work!" R11: It literally has worked both historically and in the modern age. Some police forces still use it now because it's proven an effective alternative to more harmful responses.

One point (no pun intended) about your design, the tips should be flared and/or rubberised. Mostly people you'd try to catch would attempt to sidestep, so they're likely to land on the tip. Mancatchers used in China (all?) have tips designed to prevent accidentally impaling a suspect. But it's a great design idea
@hashbrown777 Жыл бұрын
Ratchets instead of lockpins so not only can it catch people slightly too big/around larger areas like a torso, but can progressively trap people who are fighting against the jaws before they manage to shut. Except it’s not the police’s job to save every junkie from themselves. The junkie chose to take bath salts and run rampant. The police are there to protect innocent civilians. Any criticism about how they protected the innocent is valid. Criticizing them when a drug addict goes wild and ends up dying because of a police encounter is not. It was a taser, those things are 1000x more likely to not even work than to kill someone. Its 50/50 on whether they work right or do nothing. That death was likely a freak accident, that frankly the junkie brought on himself by going on a bath salt rampage. It’s sad but everyone is accountable for their own actions, and that man chose to do what he did.

I mean...it actually looks pretty effective. I say make some of these, introduce them to one or two police departments as a pilot program for a few months and pending the data from that program, possibly start rolling these things out to more police departments. Heck even groups of civilians can use these to stop violent people until help arrives

The thing that make's man-catchers so effective is having multiple of them. You have multiple contact points from different angles, and so the person struggling against them can't simply turn them to the side or walk away.
@TheOneWhoHasABadName Жыл бұрын
pretty sure any weapon is more effective when there are multiple wielders fighting a 5v1, but this is drastically more effective (5 london shanks vs 1 london shank will probably end with less than 5 surviving london shank wielders on the winning side) of course, if the one guy is fast enough to dodge/overpower all the mancatchers… well, I would tell them to run, but I don’t think they will have a chance at outrunning the overpowered guy

This easily shows why spears and pikes were literally some of the most powerful weapons in an army's arsenal.
@m9imgr7 Жыл бұрын
master musashi teaches not to rely on the length of a weapon, less maneuverable and easily countered in a 1v1 by a skilled tachi wielder. they also arent as useful in multiple combat scenarios. lets say spear vs bow, spear user will be at an insurmountable disadvantage. tachi vs bow with its quick movement options while still at a disadvantage has a greater chance of deflecting the arrow and using the window to close distance. in large scale warfare the spear only only excelled when protected by shield walls, due to its all out attack and low strength ( easily broken especially against armor.) Hammers maces and blunt weapons are what truly dominated battlegrounds due to the quick rise of maneuverable full body armor, but before that yes it was spears protected by walls of shields.
