Yes queen! Wonderful lesson!!! Realizing that the children are learning how to SPELL their names... not just writing

👏👏👏👏 I know some Kindergarten teachers that need to see this. Yes there is a reason why I do names in uppercase in preschool! Some are ready to switch to title case and some are not. I heard someone once say "Teach students where they are not where they are going" and that has been my mantra lately. I'm sorry if Kindergarten doesn't like the way I do some things but I don't teach KG, I teach preschool and it's my job to teach them in a developmentally appropriate way

Hear! Hear! We are constantly made to anticipate the next stage and not gauge where learners are and how we are going to get them there in a systematic and child-friendly way.

After my 28 years of pre-K, I've learned some silly poems, songs, and tricks to help with writing letters, but thanks for updated tools, as well as reassuring that I'm mot doing too bad after all! ☺️❤️

I LOVE everything you said and I LOVE the analogy you gave about a 3 month old walking! Plus they're all so different!! My 1st didn't walk until 15 months and 2nd was at 12 month. My 1st crawled at 9.5 months and my 2nd crawled at 5 month

Love this! It's always a debate. Thank you for explaining the child development facts about writing. Your examples are spot on!

I really like your video and it was very helpful but I did have a question regarding the drawing vs writing. For some activities or art work/books I will write out my students name in pencil on their papers ahead of time so I know who’s is who and have them trace over it. I try to have the students who know how to write their names do it all by themselves and observed them writing and not try to over correct them being that I am not focusing on their writing but rather having them label their work, while I observe where they struggle or how they go about trying to solve spelling/writing. Would you recommend me to keep doing this or to overly correct them and the way their forming letters? Also how do you instruct the difference between drawing and writing if a student has a learning disability or disability? I myself have a learning disability and when watching you explain the difference I physically understood but couldn’t visually see the difference, I couldn’t process the change due to how maybe my brain decodes and process the letter. How would I properly demonstrate or help show to students if they see letters in the same or similar form? I hope this makes sense. I try to verbal speak out loud The motion/direction that I forming/moving the line in. I have noticed that some of my students when they do go to write they will say up down around to help them navigate the direction/movement that they’re going in, would you recommend me keep saying the movement out loud, when working on letter form/writing. I do a variety of different activities depending on where the student is at. Some I have them make the formatting with a toy or manipulative if they are not at a stage yet to grasp or hold a writing tool. Like having them writing the letter in sand or a sensory Familiar engaging play/teaching. What of how Would you incorporate what you discussed/mentioned.

We use HWT CURRICULUM and focus on proper formation of uppercase letters. I move to lowercase when they’re ready. I teach 4-5 year olds. What if they come to school writing their name using lowercase letters but yet haven’t learned the proper way to write the uppercase letters of their name-based on HWT philosophy? I would appreciate any thoughts on this subject. Thank you!

Is there an order we should teach? I’m starting a 3-4 yr old class and want to know correct way to begin this yr. First month just use manipulatives and focus on strength and then move into letters? Ty!!

Yes, but as a sub I have to listen to what the lead teacher wants even though I disagree with her. I even said this child is not ready to do this. (going with my instinct) I just get she (or he) cries for everything. And I end up sitting there until the child stops crying and writes something on a piece of paper.
