I attempt a full-frinky textual analysis of this spectacularly dense new album by R.A.P. Ferreira. It is a bougie and macademic video but I think it is some of my better work.

Agree, no shade but scallops hotel/milos/RAP Ferreira's production is a bit samey. Purple Moonlight Pages has the Jefferson Park Boys on live instruments along with a hip-hop producer and it sounds gorgeous but it's a bit more understated with more aged, calm and collected lyrics while So The Flies Dont't Come shows a younger guy with a more reckless and provocateur flair no less well spoken and thought out lyrically while striking a good balance between accessibility and weirdness in writing and production (also its amazing). I'd love to see one of those two covered. Things That Happen at Day/Things That Happen at Night is also amazing but more of a deep cut.

when i hear "Abomunist" i think "abolition" first, we can take that wherever but i mostly think it's about abolishing the idea of the self and collectivising it. fits in with Kaufman's goal to not be remembered/have a legacy

It's rare to have someone give an in depth analysis of very heady and dense lyrics like this. I have been trying to get better at taking pokes at what some of my favorite lyricists mean when they pen, so I really appreciate hearing a professor interpret what it means to him! Thank you.

At 44:20 the bar "off riding green horses" reminded me of the song "pure scientific intelligence (quantum)" from Ferreira/milo's album "budding ornithologists are weary of tired analogies." On that song he raps, "Forestry is forward motion, a green horse captures the notion well." I also remembered a line from No Starving Artists where he says, "Dalliance, an army of one green stallion. We growin' scallions." This got me thinking about what the green horse/stallion represents. Apparently milo/Ferreira's 2018 tour in support of budding ornithologists was called "The Green Horse for Rap Tour." Somebody in the Genius lyrics section for "No Starving Artists" said this is refers to the poet Pablo Neruda's "Caballo Verde para la Poesía" magazine, which printed surrealist poems. Small world I guess. Prof. Skye's, I'd love to hear anything you can make out of the green horse bars. For some reason they keep sticking with me. I also realized that the song "Stet" from budding ornithologists has another Bomkauf-Bob Kaufman-cough -bomb line on it. Cool to see the development of these themes prior to Bob's Son.

Also redguard snipers is super important to the concept of the album. Think ferdydurke breaking form. In the refrain new sounds new verbs new words it’s like bob Kaufman’s tendency to create new words.

Yeah, Abomunist Manifesto made me want to visit the OG poem with the same title. Seems like messages regarding the ABOlition of hierarchies / hierarchal institutions (Footprintism) and ABOmination as a label socially constructed by society placed on a group of people (almost every line in the poem that paints a negative picture of Abomunists). Wish Milo didn't skip the line "Abomunist reject everything except snowmen" but maybe intentionally left out cuz that was too obvious.

You HAVE to check out his album So The Flies Don't Come from 2015. Its really considered his magnum opus by a lot of people. To your point about not understanding some lines, he has mentioned before in interviews that its 100% on purpose. I remembering he mentioned snickering to himself as he writes a line that he knows people just won't be able to decipher. Great artist and really down to earth guy if you ever meet him on one of his tours.

Rap has always been related to poetry. One of the many influence "tendrils" in the formative years of Hip-Hop were the many black poets born from the Black Arts Movement, Jazz, and various acts like the Last Poets and the Watts Prophets who decide to blend their poetry performance with drum beats and instrumentation and then decided to record those performances back in the 1960s. However I strongly agree with you that Hip-Hop is a distinctly different medium from poetry because of how much versatile and expansive it is.

I love this analysis! Thank you so much for sharing! To add to the Wallace conspiracy, R.A.P. Ferreria, in an interview, said that he found David Foster WALLACE's ability to interrupt the reader, and not give punchlines admirable, because it forces the audience to pay closer attention to the work.

On the track Listening, the line "My shit be Ishmael Reed reading receipts with a three-piece" is a reference to a Dadaist/Philosophical novel called Ishmael (1992). In the novel, Ishmael is the name of a telepathic, and a highly intelligent gorilla who is always munching on reeds while teaching his pupil. it's a fantastic book.
