A tripod missing a leg... Rush had a brilliant run for decades and were very influential for me. I can't see Geddy and Alex being creative together without Neil's lyrics. I kind of like what Alex is doing with Envy of None. Move forward and don't look back.

You totally nailed it with this video on so many levels. ……As a teenager becoming a musician and awakening adult in the late ‘70s 2112, Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres was my university for music, philosophy, art, science, storytelling, LIFE…Neil Peart “ The Professor” was who I aspired to be like.

This brought back memories of lying on a beanbag with my first girlfriend listening to La Villa Strangiato (she wasn't a fan, but it was my house). "I can hear your heart beating fast", she said. "Is it beating for me?". "Uh, yeah" I said, not wanting to admit that it was my body preparing itself for Alex's blistering second solo.

I was at one of r u s h first concerts in the US. They opened up for Charlie Daniels at the St Louis KSHE kite flying contest which Drew 80,000 people to Forest Park. It was Neil peart's first tour with the band and was fantastic I just wish I didn't get so drunk and high so I could remember it more I was Seventeen at the time. I also saw the great super Group Emerson Lake and Palmer in 1971 on their first tour of the states and I bring this up to suggest that Carl Palmer could very easily take on Neil peart's percussion duties after all he was the drummer that inspired Neil Peart and he was also a fan of Rush. That would be my Preferred Choice or Geddy Lee and Alex lifeson could do by Carl Palmer is doing with the ELP tribute and bring Neil Peart into the band via high resolution video just like Carl does with Keith and Greg😮

Solution- When Primus altered line-up, they altered the band name. If Rush were to keep going as Rush- it would be like the Who without Keith Moon. Still a band; it was Pete's band and no one sang Pete's songs like Roger... but not the same. They might get multiple percussionists (they would need to, to cover it...)- Maybe get Danny Carey, and Mike Bordin. (Matt Halpern as one of the duo). But change the name of the band. Rush-X... (heh- Canadian in-joke referencing Bush/ aka Bush-X)

Geddy and Alex should do what they want and if it's called Rush, well, that's what would make cash- it'd cause some fans to get annoyed, others would be happy that the thing rolls on for a bit longer. The substance of the legacy has already happened. So it's whatever. Maybe they'd put on one or two more fun tours- even if Ged's vox is strained (which is as much of an issue as Neil's absence, musically of course).

Mike Mangini for the drum chair in Rush? After all, he's had classical training, his chops are unbeatable and he comes across as a very open and warm hearted guy. Most of all, he'd be supremely creative in his drum parts with a full sense of phrasing, dynamics and orchestration. Just my 2p.

I will answer the question before watching the video. And of course this is MY opinion. Alex and Geddy should get together if that's what they want. Should they do it as Rush? No! Get together, with a new drummer, write new music and call the band something other than Rush. This way the drummer will not feel pressured to be a Peart clone. It frees him up to be himself and forge his own path. And we get new music from the guys. To continue as Rush and play Rush songs means getting a Peart clone. What drummer wants to do that? Peart's drum parts are an integral component of the Rush sound. I dare say fans do not want an improviser that is going to change the drumming on Tom Sawyer, Xanadu, YYZ, Spirit of Radio, etc, etc, etc. The people that air drummed at Rush shows want the same fills. Why should a drummer be a clone of another drummer and face the scrutiny attached to it? It's a thankless job. As a longtime Rush fan I have no desire to hear Geddy and Alex with a Peart clone. What's the point?

No need to reboot Rush. I'm a lifelong fan, musician, and self-educated student of philosophy. I'd like to see and hear a new music project from Lee and Lifeson; new drummer, new style, new band. Neil will never be replaced. His impact on Rush was too large and supremely unique. Rush's music is a sonic, lyric, and life-affirming oasis. Well done boys. Well done.

Only half way through the vid but I agree with everything you've said. I think if Geddy and Alex want to write new music today which would be AWESOME they should just form a new band with a new name. It would take the emphasis off the Neil question and allow them to do what they want and move on to something new which they've done so often through their careers, while still freely referencing Rush and Neil and anything from their past they wish to bring into the music.

Hi Andy, Really enjoyed your meandering thoughts but I think it's a bit of a stretch to rule out free will just because we're all going to die! The universe might seem deterministic at our everyday scale of perception but it gets a lot fuzzier at lower levels so our freewill and consciousness have a get out of jail card from this mechanical dead end. Anyway ... if Alex and Geddy were to work again as a trio I can't see past Matt Cameron on drums. He did a fine job on Geddy's solo album "My Favorite Headache".

Jeff Plate, drummer for Trans Siberian Orchestra east live tour. He is the closest to Neil I have ever seen in concert that has a work effort that would work well with Alex and Geddy. He is not a lyricist, so it probably is impossible to find a lyrics writer to put words to new music the way Neil wrote so amazingly insightful.

I would love to see them do a series of tribute shows with a variety of drummers involved. Simon Phillips is a great choice, as are Neil's friends Danny Carey, Omar Hakim and Stewart Copeland. I also thought Matt Chamberlain did an excellent job on Geddy's My Favorite Headache album. Andy, I know you're not keen on Crown Lands but a combination of those two chaps with Lee and Lifeson would cover all of the bases (basses?) - including the higher vocals from the band's early days that Geddy can no longer handle effectively.

Rush 2.0, marketed as Rush, would be a betrayal of their artistic legacy and integrity. There simply is no Rush without Neil Peart. It doesn't matter how technically accomplished a replacement drummer would be, or the fealty which which they perform Neil's parts - it's not Neil Peart, and it's not Rush. Beyond that, Geddy's voice is just gone for most of the upper ranges where he was comfortable as a man in his 20s-40s. It's painful to hear him try it. Now, if they wanted to do tours with other musicians, you know, An Evening of Rush Music, with Geddy, Alex & Special Guests, with a young vocalist, I'm all for that. Just don't do what Ian Anderson has done with Jethro Tull.

A version of Rush with any other drummer would be fundamentally different to Rush with Neil. However, the most authentic Rush currently available is 67% of the classic lineup. If they want to do it, I say good luck to them. I would hope that they are sensible enough to make sure anything they do feels comfortable to them and that it serves some artistic purpose for them. A carbon copy of Neil's drumming is not likely to be their aim but I'm not sure how far from his playing style they could go. I would guess that they might consider expanding from a trio and exploring music not "suitable" for the classic Rush. Perhaps we will be treated to their version of Jazz fusion and maybe we will like their new direction. The real question is, Are you up for it Andy?

If they picked up a drummer, recorded a handful of songs and played Rush songs it would cheapen their legacy, don’t think that will happen. What I see happening is the find a drummer maybe a keyboard player or even someone who sings write some new songs and play a few Rush songs that maybe have been tweaked a little for the new lineup. Doubt it would be called Rush in any incarnation though.

It would relieve the pressure & expectation, the fans would know it's not a Rush Mk2 and they could be free to play what THEY want. A bit like how the Page/Plant album wasn't Led Zep. The death of Peart has forced these guys into early retirement, I'm sure they're itching to play but don't want to disrespect their Legacy.

Would be an interesting thing that would throw people for a loop and be multi promotional and not come off as pathetically pulling an existing celebrity drummer out of one setting to create a stir in another. Yes but as a new band with new songs as they continue to give the fans nostalgic experiences in live performance. It would greatly honor Neil Peart's legacy to do so IMHO. Howard Stern recently interviewed Hagar & Co. on a new supergroup tour where Satriani attempts to play a EVH solo but not so well both to show respect as well as let everyone know this band's take on the Van Halen material is going to be dissimilar if itself virtuosic. I think that says it all & is something even Rush fans can learn from nevermind all of us.

They have every right to come back and tour as Rush. However, I know the fanboys ( yes Rush has many fanboys). The fanboys wouldn't except them. Rush has always been a band of individuals. Fanboys hated both Geddy's and Alex's Solo albums that were that nothing like Rush. There were splits in the fan base once Signals came out. Geddy and Alex are two completely different people now than during the Rush years.. I would love to see Alex and Geddy create new music for their own selves, not for the fanbase.

@@scottmcgregor4829 Ok but Neil Peart had to work his ass off & was permitted to take nothing for granted. If he did he'd be like so many other poets, writers & drummers in the world performing as almost literal puppets. To be clear I know myself it's hard work to be a good puppet. I don't disparage it. I just cite it to illuminate how much harder it is to be yourself the way Peart was himself. The risk of failure in being sustainably successful at being oneself is MASSIVE! You know, one way of being a puppet is to be slavish to one's own past successes -- something Peart implicitly asserted in interviews and for which, e.g., Moving Pictures nevermind Permanent Waves or even 2112 would have never happened had he done so. So yeah granted, Lee & Lifeson have every right to tour & play the hits as Rush. They started the band! But Peart became an essential ingredient for Rush's sound & work as they evolved, and that ingredient was an explicit promotion of change as something to welcome as a friend not fear or disparage. Lee & Lifeson are a part of that beautiful legacy & helped Peart confront it during his own darkest days with their own strengths. I'm just saying I miss it is all, the everchanging and not strictly nostalgic Rush. Maybe I'm wrong and/or selfish to feel this way but right now it's how I feel about it.

@@johnnylayton1672 that is the very reason that I think that it's a bad reason for Rush to try another go around as Rush.. older fans hate changes in music. Most so-called fans hated their solo albums went completely different directions musically, many fans stepped off the Rush train in the 80s and early 90s because of the music the musical directions that they took. Geddy and Alex are different people and musicians from our our teen memories. People and drummers to often forget that the master himself Buddy Rich was a child prodigy at age two. He never had to work at being amazing. His best friend Mel Torme. Once said when he was at Buddy's house that. He said " let's mess around on the drums". Buddy in his usual manner said " what?? I don't have any goddam drums around here. Why would I want drums around here.!!??" Mel gave him the captain obvious answer and said " to practice, don't you need to practice??" Buddy just replied "why??". It's true, Buddy never practiced. Year's of practice carries very little weight, when it comes to stature,or deserving accolades.

@@scottmcgregor4829 I seem to have misread or failed to catch any edits you may have made to your first response please forgive me. My last response was a double-down in response to a misperceived counter and instead we are actually in much agreement as mutual Rush fans. And yeah, Buddy Rich remains my favorite for his muscular yet virtuosic drumming. I don't find a psychological men-feminine dualism & its academic reconciliation compelling for regarding music's importance anywhere near as much as actual men-women unions, and so people like Rich & Peart are easier for me to empathize as mature, full artists as aggressive drummers who rarely if ever show a sensitive side required by say a Norah Jones song despite that it catches my ear also. I think social media & its feature for engagement however hollow has been a massive shift for media. So many people engaging in it do so now to seek feedback which many older generations would consider a lack of not a futher step in personal development. Were Peart a young man today would he regard individuality so important even having been exposed to Ayn Rand's work? Who knows but it IS a chink in the armor I tried to construct to defend my own argument -- as Peart himself was unquestionably influenced as an artist by both Rich & Rand.

I suspect the no free will thing is just something the academics who want to force Karl Marx (etc etc etc etc, but who's got the time for all those names) to not be wrong. I might just be a suspicious cynic. It's OK if I am. My predetermined gut feel says this is what makes it necessary to fuss about whether there "is" or "isn't" free will. You can ignore it if you like. What's the Greek word for "lazy"? I'm trying to establish the Lazy Idle Good for Nothings School of Think With Head (new name for phlogiston or whatever that phancy artsy fartsy lah dee bloody dah subject is), but I think it'll sound more important if I use some mutilated Greek in the name. Especially if I good and proper butcher the pron, nêh?

@@edwardcapobianco2975 oh good another Ed haha Stewart Copeland a h m a y b e he certainly has the chops and the speed so yes however what makes Palmer a better candidate is the sheer complexity of elps music which was kind of what rush were going for when they started. Carl Palmer and Neil Peart were more similar in their styles and certainly Carl influenced Neil Peart I think more in the ways of a percussionist with all of the little bells and whistles that go along with being a percussionist instead of just a rock and roll drummer. I would also consider Aynsley Dunbar who after all was the drummer for early Journey when they were a progressive rock act before Steve fairy ruined the band. Aynsley Dunbar was probably one of the greatest progressive rock drummers I've ever seen. And I also believe Terry Bozzio could fill those shoes especially after seeing him with UK. And of course Rush could also do the video thing kind of like Carl Palmer is doing on the ELP Legacy tour. Whatever they do they better do it fast because none of these guys are spring chickens anymore
