I ask Mark Haden, the executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) Canada whether kids and teens can safely experience psychedelics. And if so, then what would the minimum age be? The answers he gave are something your parents probably don’t want to hear. I’m not even sure how I feel about this; and this is ME we’re talking about!
The following is a clip taken from a much longer (2 hour long) podcast (psychedcast) that will be released at a later date. I hope you enjoy!
To help MAPS reach their goal of legalization you can do so by following these links:

Ive tripped probably 2 dozen times, and the more ive tripped, the more it’s made me want to be a better person. It’s so strange, when I have a hard trip, I feel like a piece of shit. But I feel like I piece of shit because it makes me realize what I’m doing wrong in life. Such a beautiful drug.

I've been doing it like 2-3 times a month this year alone. Probably collectively over 50-100 times since first tried at age 16. I'm now 21. I don't think there is much abuse. I recently did two tabs and it was beautiful and I was feeling so comfy just like every other time. Its always beautiful and magical. I never learn much. Just cool distortions and loving my gf. I like to think there is outer trips and inner trips. You learn more through inner trips which is when u close ur eyes in dark silent room and let the acid work its magic for out of body experience. U learn from those. Anyways, acid make brain go durrr and u can always stop to ground urseld and come back.

@@Nkkilla No doubt cid can cause that. But like the man in the video said, it’s about maturity. Kinda the same circumstance when a toddler gets introduced to candy, it’s not going to be mature therefore it’s not going to care about the side effects of excessive candy because all it’s going to care about is the feeling of dopamine released from the toddlers brain caused from eating delicious candy.

What a great goal. I'm over 70 y/o and have dreamed of psychedelic legalisation since the 1970's. Quality control is what I want for the takers of these drugs. Wishing you luck in your quest.
@LunchBXcrue
@LunchBXcrue 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with that. Psychedelics have such wonderful properties and can be such a useful tool. But I would go further that if we are responsible enough as a society to use these tools we should be responsible enough to see all drugs as tools. Every drug out there has some medical use or therapeutic application in some form or another, and if we are going to be honest its been pretty clear for many many years people will take what they want anyway. I don't however think that privately owned business should be able to profit from the sale of these drugs, it should go right back into research, things like addiction care and rehab facilities etc and especially education.

@@LunchBXcrue Totally agree. I have always advocated legalisation for all drugs, so they can be put into the hands of professionals to manufacture and distribute. Governments can then tax the drugs, and then provide the "safety nets" needed for the minority who will have trouble through their use of "whatever".
@LunchBXcrue
@LunchBXcrue 4 жыл бұрын
@@douglaslatham9904 Yes! Ha, its wonderful to see someone else who thinks that. I've had so many people say "oh put down the pipe you want to open the flood gates" as if you can't already find pretty much whatever drug you want already. At least then you know what you are getting and the money doesn't go to violent gangs and fund wars like in mexico. I mean if the US legalized these drugs and made more pure and safer stuff how would the cartels be able to compete? Who wants to buy LSD from some shady dude not knowing whether its LSD or DOB-DragonFly and is going to have you hallucinating for the next 16 hours, potentially 2-3 days! Or kill you which lots of the drugs people sell as LSD can do easily. Seems like a no brainer to me but so many people are so unwilling to allow people to be able to make their own decisions and are either so incredibly lazy or just bad parents who aren't willing to properly educate their kids about drugs and the dangers and would rather they didn't even have to bother and they were just illegal and "impossible" to get.

@@LunchBXcrue I give you a small example of how bad prohibition is. I have been an illicit drug user since the mid 1960's. Marijuana use has been constant, but I have limited all others because of the adulteration by the criminals that you have to "deal with". But even the marijuana has been "added to" quite often. Over the years I have bought marijuana that has been sprayed with "mortine" bug killer (to give it an extra kick), marijuana that has been laced with horse-tranquilizer (same reasoning), marijuana that has been laced with various pharmaceutical drugs like the psycho-tropical ones, and even viagra. It really pains me to hear the "establishment" talk of the harm marijuana does in the community when it is hardly ever just pure marijuana. It's like a heroin addict friend of mine who told me time and time again, that the percentage of the heroin he purchased on the street, varied from 8% to close to 20%. He was always careful about his use because the big difference in "quality" was one of the main reasons for overdose deaths. On top of that was the fact of "What was the 80% or 92%" that you were injecting yourself with. Could be laundry powder, battery acid, plain flour, sugar, anything really.....Just depended on who was doing the cutting. Prohibition has made the "drug problem" far worse than it should be, and not only because people get their lives ruined by the law process for partaking in the "freedom of choice" aspect of society, and because authorities don't like their life style choices.

Nilly Sigger the child you talk about is one of immaturity, there are some smart kids out there who are more aware than some adults. Hence why he said, maturity not age because if you see past the social barriers you realize some people develop quicker than others. Yeah sure it should still be a parents responsibility for their child but it shouldn’t have the vibes of “taking your kid to go take medicine and get better” it should be loving embracing vibes

James McMullan i kind of disagree with you bro. sure there’s no measurement scale of happiness or maturity, but doing some mental health diagnosis tests can tell you whether or not if the individual is happy, mature, depressed, etc. based off what the diagnosis test is meant for. also, maturity is basically being self aware of your decisions and how they impact yourself and those around you. singling out mature kids from the rest isn’t s difficult because there a far fewer of them in the first place. but i would agree to the fact that, ethically, children (pre-adolescence) should not be taking any phycedelics just so they can strengthen their view of the real world.

@@ethanpister The principle stands. I've taken Vyvanse before which is very similar to Adderall. Methamphetamine and amphetamine may not be identical. But they're pretty similar. I would give mushrooms to a kid in a safe environment with a trained professional long before I would give a kid Vyvanse then send them off to school. Psychedelics are powerful for sure. They need to be respected and used in safe contexts. But the fact that there's a stigma to psychedelics while doctors write scripts for amphetamines like they're candy is ridiculous. Nick Speelman fully agreed, the stigma towards psychedelics is unhelpful and hypocritical. My gripe is that this comment stigmatizes Adderall and it’s variants, and ADHD, a serious condition that many people provide commentary on without fully understanding what it actually is. Granted, the over diagnosis of ADHD is certainly a problem, but we can’t correct this issue through stigmatization of the disorder.

Axel Smith that isn’t addiction that’s dependency... there’s a difference. Dependency is when you crave it and you want it all the time (like you described). Addiction is when your body has a physical reaction to not getting it, this can often be fatal. Like take serious alcoholics for example. If you have an alcohol addiction and try to quit old turkey you will get very, very sick. This is not the case with acid. This happens with drugs like crack, meth, or heroin.

Adam I really want you to talk about the dangers of high concentrate THC. I've been smoking dabs for about 2 years straight and decided to quit. It was the absolute worst week of my life. I was sweating, shaking, puking, and had skin crawling anxiety. There's too many people who believe there's no negative connotations to these high strengths. I used to be one of them. If anybody disagrees and you smoke dabs consistantly, try to stop for a whole week. It's just as rough as any other withdrawl...please everyone dont send hate or tell me I've been smoking laced material, I grew and pressed myself. EDIT: I understand the moderation aspect(especially now), my point is a wide majority believe it's still okay to smoke everyday with no repercussion. EDIT2: (2 months after quitting) I still havent smoked since and after the 2nd week I started to feel more normal again. I'm happy I quit, I was abusing it and on top of that wasting away my money. I'm proud of myself and if anyone was in the position I was I can testify that it is so difficult to quit but it was the best thing to do if abusing it. Hope everyone is well and i still love this community adam has brought together. Peace ✌

age and maturity are related, so it cant be only about maturity without implying age at some level, this disturbed me from the rest of the interview, I cant understand how a scientist refuses to see this basic contradiction he is making which Adam remarked at least TWICE and he didn't seem to realize or care. you take the average maturity of a group of people from 10-20 then 20-30 then 30-60 and see what happens, if Adam insisted with the question of a 7 or 11 years old kid tripping is for this reason, this man is a sociopath if he believes a kid of either of those ages can actually be mature enough to trip. even at 15 you are risking a lot, if your trip goes well good, if it goes south good luck trying to surpass a potential traumatic experience at that age without later repercussions.

Innit, I appreciate people have good consequences from weed, but i find it makes me more socially anxious mainly while I'm high but sometimes i get anxious when I'm stone cold sober. It's not a question of whether or not weed is good or bad, but whether or not you react well to it, I think. I still use it a lotttt, but mainly by myself and I'm fine. Use it if you want to, but recognise that some people react better and worse, and one subjective experience of weed cannot objectively decide if it should be used or not.

When I was 15 I explored the world of psychedelics. I had my hands on everything from DMT, LSD, mushies, Salvia, and 2cb. I only went "overboard" once but it bit me in the arse. These compounds taught me many valuable lessons. After 1/2 years taking certain doses of different substances, and exploring my mind I "hung up the phone". I had gained all the answers I needed at that time in my life. Although after "meeting my maker" (as Mark Haddon put it) I have even MORE questions about life. Now I am currently 18, I haven't taken another psychedelic since. I began following my dreams, became an overall more positive person, and my lifelong depression has been in remission for almost 2 years thanks to these beautiful compounds. Age truly doesn't matter. However, I do advise against doing ANY drug until your brain is fully developed but that has never stopped anyone. As long as you know yourself and are mentally mature I think teens could handle them. Especially if used in a therapeutic setting. Mushrooms could treat depression in my opinion, and psychedelics could become an alternative to antidepressants. (I took antidepressants from 10-15 years old.) All and all this current research makes me really happy and I am glad we have a social platform to see it in action. Thanks Adam! Keep up the good work, you are doing great!

I based a lot of my young life off Psychedelics. It was hard for me to focus in school relationships being misunderstood and this lead me to living a harder life growing up. Especially in the states.

I also felt that I received everything I needed from LSD, Shrooms, and DMT at that time. I would love to do them again in the future when I feel called to do so. But for right now, it would feel as if I’m abusing the substance.

Honestly, I did LSD at the age of 16 & it was life changing. I have to say that it by far changed my life for the better. It remerged my passion for education & sports, killed any social anxiety I had as well. It also made me more of a free-thinker, more so being able to speak for myself rather than following what others wanted in all situations.

I find psychedelics very interesting, in my personal experience I've only tripped on psilocybin mushroom but never felt like eating them regularly. Don't get me wrong, the effect that I get and the trip in itself is always welcomed and lovely but when it is done, it's done even tough I love everything about it I don't want to chase it. I first tried shrooms when i was 19 (21 now) but was curious since I was 16, did a lot of research before jumping in and I'm glad I did because I wouldn't have had the same trips if I went completely blind into the experience.

I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder when I was 13. To help me, my mom gave me weed (which didn't really do much), and when I was 17, she gave me LSD. In the weeks that followed, I was less depressed than I ever remembered being. Since then (I'm 20 now), I've been taking acid or mushrooms a couple of times a year, and it has *significantly* helped me. The positive mindset, the control I have over my thoughts and behavior has been life-changing. It's helped me to understand myself, difficult things that I've experienced, and life in general. I have major respect for these substances and fully believe that it could help a lot of people with various mental/physical health issues. Hell, I think it could even help people without any issues! That being said, I have a friend who accidentally ate acid when he was about six years old, and to this day he refuses to take any sort of drugs, and he won't go into detail about the experience. While some kids may be able to handle it (like the one that Haden referenced), I think in western society at least, it should be handled extremely delicately. Not all adults can handle it, either, it's not a magical solution that everyone needs to use. Regardless, I have been seriously considering going to school for ethnopharmacology or ethnobotany and it's been a dream of mine for a while to work for MAPS and things similar to it. It's an incredibly fascinating subject!!

I was 17 with my first trip. Just a year ago. I was with my 2 friends and I had little knowledge of psycadelics along with my friends. My friend frank had done it a few times and didn’t explain anything about good or bad trips or how it made you feel. I went into the storm blindly. The trip was AMAZING. We sat in his upstairs living room waiting for 45 minutes until I said “Hey are those curtains moving a little bit or am I seeing things. (Keep in mind only a 75 or 100ug tab) Frank says “no man, we’re starting our trip” We sat in there for the whole come up and I was amazed by what I had missed this whole time about not only myself but the world itself. Thankfully his mother was okay with psycadelics as long as we didn’t do any pills or drugs of the narcotic sort unless it was small amounts of marijuana. She knew we were tripping. We begin our peak and we go and ask her at about 1AM if we can go on a walk. She says “Of course! You have 45 minutes and I’ll have cookies when you’re back” We go outside and we’re just hopping around laughing our ASSES away. The trees, the night sky, hell even the concrete looked beautiful. We went to a park and hugged a tree, pissed on the street and went home to some cookies. From there we spent 3 hours in the bathroom amazing by the tile floor. I’m even shaking right now reminiscing about this it was so intense. Main thing I remember is feeling one with nature which is common for acid. It felt as the house was alive. My breathing was synced with the walls breathing. 8/10 best experience. Would be a 10/10 if I was more prepared for the after effects and how depressed you feel when you are fully come down off the drug. Should teens do it? I would say yes if our brains were finished developing by the age 15 but I would just wait till your brain is matured. Psycadelics and marijuana don’t mix well with young brains.

Do you still trip on psychedelics after that first experience? I ask because i related very personally when you said the come down and its feeling. My first time ever tripping, for about 1.5 weeks after the trip, it was the worse and shittest feeling i could ever come by. The aftermath, it was almost as if i was depressed. Just questioning everything i thought i knew. The trip itself was so new and great though, i had a great time tripping with friends for the first time on a 200ug tab, yet i felt like shit after it was all over. However, despite all this. I continued to trip. Amazing trips! My first trip was nothing compared to all my other trips. Here and there, moments of some bad thought loops, but over all. Great trips, and the aftermath was nothing compared to my first time ever. Never have i ever felt that shity aftermath again. It was only ever my first. Makes me wonder, why?

I am currently coming down from an acid trip so what a coincidence that I’ve come across this! I completely agree with Mark, it’s not age, it’s maturity. I’m 18 and I have gradually taken higher doses over the past year. As a result I have become more self aware, ambitious, and GRATEFUL! I cannot emphasize how it has impacted me in a positive way. I learned about it when I was 15 but waited years because I just didn’t feel ready yet. I wasn’t mature enough. (Considering I just entered adulthood) Acid has helped me cross into this new chapter of my life as a more positive, earth loving, grateful, and mindful person.

It is not a researched enough topic, so we don't really know how on average would a psychedelic affect a psychopath. But from my personal experience (I have antisocial tendencies and I have taken psychedelics) I can say LSD changed my perspective and gave me a sense of emotional empathy were very few things have worked before. MDMA did that too, but it was less strong. It was like being mentally put on trial for all the "evil" I had inside me and it gave me a lot of anxiety where normally I would not care at all about the consequences of my actions on other people's lives. It is very weird and almost uncomfortable. If your ego is so big it is somewhat painful to feel all of it just vanish into nothingness. I respect very few people and very few things, but psychedelics are one of them.

I had a deep existential crisis at 16 which plunged me into a 6-7 month existential depression which was utter hell. I researched heavily about different religions and philosophies, tried out atheism, tried out nihilism, tried out absurdism, but none of them stopped the constant questions and I wasn’t content so I found Alan Watts and Buddhism and at first I didn’t like Buddhism because it felt so nihilistic and I didn’t want that, I wanted Abrahamic God, Abrahamic religion, I wasn’t ready for what could be the truth. I meditated and did yoga, journaled and sat in silence for weeks trying to come to terms with my existence and the Buddhist philosophies helped with that some of my favorite quotes that helped me keep going were “a flower doesn’t know it’s a flower, it just is.” Buddhism taught me to just be. I was so alone and no one around me knew how to help me because they were still sleep but I still kept going despite being heavily suicidal at one point. It took constant meditation and Buddhist teaching to get to a place where I was at peace then right after that I started smoking weed and it did everything that I had been practicing for months in just 2 hours. This natural plant that is here for us taught me to let go and taught me that everything is okay. I used weed once a week while I kept studying Buddhism and the Buddhist teachings started making sense then I read about psychedelics and KZfaq started recommending me all these videos that taught me about them so I decided to research everything I knew about shrooms and lsd and got my first two tabs, bought a test kit and set up a nice area with good intention and I was in a good headspace. I’m only 17 but that trip blasted my depression to another galaxy, it’s been 3 months and I still view the world the same way that I did on Lucy. I beat existential depression without the use of man-made sedatives and I owe it to weed, lsd, and meditation. I also know that lsd is man-made so if anyone reads this don’t take my head off lol. I am way more open to many truths now and I can understand the Hindu concepts like non-duality because for a certain period of time during my trip I was everything, I was the pencil in my hand, I was the carpet, I was the air, and in essence that’s a non-dual state. Idk all I’m saying is that drugs helped me and life is beautiful and just take them responsible because they can surely help supplement the process of your spiritual growth

I took acid and mushrooms for the first time junior year and it helped me realize a lot about myself. This being said I’ve all but raised myself from the age of 12 so I feel that maturity played a big factor in this. Ive watched kids the same age completely freak tf out and take back nothing from the experience. Ive also seen people use it as a party drug in high school where you just laugh and take nothing seriously and ultimately also takeaway nothing. Being able to take back and change something about yourself after a trip is when you know you’ve become mature enough to take these substances.

the thing is, i'm 16 years old and over the past year or two i've seen my friends (both older and of the same age) take quite intense psychedelics (acid being the most common). Although I agree with what he's saying about maturity, psychedelics I think need to be treated with a different perspective. My friends knew exactly what would happen when they took their tabs, they'd done their research and watched your videos etc etc. But each one has come out from their first trip severely regretting it and realising they weren't ready to take psyches just yet. What i guess i'm trying to say is, some psychadelics have the capability for someone to completely change their view on life both positively and negatively. A lot of teenagers (like myself) believe themselves to be mature than they probably are. So therefore i don't believe we should determine wether teens are ready to take psychedelics just because they say they are, there should definitely be a minimum age recommendation.

I'm actually 15 and used LSD many times, I've been responsible for my acts while on LSD and went through nearly 20 trips without external problems associated with LSD or social problems, my grades are even better now than before (just because I need them to go study somewhere else lol), I focused more in which path should I take in this trillion path life that I have now and the truth is that I can get to be anything I want actually, time is a very big factor, once you turn 18 paths get narrower and more with time. I have this point of view where I can see my death time and from there see how I did on this path and think on how it could have been trough other paths, the thing is that I can somehow see those other important paths that I should take and correct my path decision from young and not from my death. Once you read this it seems like it has no sense but on LSD... trust me, its the best idea you could ever have to improve your own life and future life without knowing at all, just go and don't surrender, you will get there, time is not important here, the important thing here is how you run that path exactly to the idea you had in that death experience. btw I have 7 revolutionary ideas I have written down which doesn't seem to have any sense... they do have it. I'm going for the Nobel prize... I do want to improve humankind! I'm going to make this real, I hope there are other people with more power than I actually have that think the same way... edit: obviously I have many other ideas than just this one, I have like a 40-page book about my trips, never tried ayahuasca, never tried mda, mdma, or other '' dangerous'' or damaging substances, just LSD and 11-hydroxy-THC 2 edit: by damaging I refer to substances like opioids, cocaine, barbiturates..., etc.

Not exactly in the same setting but with the same mindset. An indescribable feeling honestly. Going back to my best moments of when I didn’t understand, while understanding my surroundings. Edit: theme of the situation, I’m positive your brain when your in your youngest is the same as it is on certain psychedelics. The strongest ones(the toad), take you so far back, you go back to where you were before YOU were YOU or at least before your soul got trapped in the box it’s in. so once you do it you think you feel like “god”. You’ve felt like that before, but don’t remember it because since then you were born, and practiced with your brain so much to the point to where your functioning perfect now until you pass and your souls free. It goes where it pleases, your heaven and your hell, I’m a Christian and I believe in heaven and hell but I’m not like everyone, I’m asking for my soul to go to heaven, if you don’t believe in that you’ll go to where YOU want to because it’s your choice to roam the infinity.

I think the interpretation of being addicted to pyschs is interesting. I know people who take breaks from them but I would describe as stubborn, and even despite extremely challenging trips and revelations, they come back to them time after time even though some of these people appear almost terrified of some of the substances they choose to consume.

i think this guy has a point. i told my mom right before i took acid, did my research, thought about it, and did it when i knew i was mature enough or stable enough to take acid. i knew the cautions, the goods, the bads, inbetweens, etc. etc. in my opinion young children 13 under, ect. should not take acid. before taking lsd they need to know how to handle themselves mentally, spritualy, and all the others. i think its definatly about maturity. im still healthy and the same person, im still a minor, doing well. NOTE: STAY IN A SAFE PLACE WHEN TAKING!!!

I feel like psychedelics (or at least LSD specifically) can be psychologically addicting in small doses (50ug and less) where they mostly just give you euphoric feeling and stimulation without going too deep inside your mind. Feeling good is always psychologically addicting. That said, there aren't any withdrawals and the tolerance still builds quickly so you absolutely can't take it every day and expect the effects . Also psychadelics are some of the least harmful psychoactive substances in the world.

@@kevinsanders1847 I'm just talking from my own experience, but there was a time (for about 2 months or so) where I took 50ug of LSD every 4-5 days. It was euphoric every time. I looked forward to take it. I had (slight) cravings for it. However, as I said, there were no withdrawals and stopping wasn't hard in the slightest. Mind you this is in no way an argument against the legalization. I'm fully for legalization of all psychadelics and weed, but I also feel like we need to be completely honest about every aspect of them.

Adam, those FMRI studies show that the brain of someone on acid is similar to the brain of, essentially, a baby. Infants are 'tripping' for the first maybe three years of their life. Their modes of perception change as their linguistic skills/general comprehension of the world improve, and as they develop an ego. (This must be why no-one can remember anything before the age of three.) Seven-year-olds aren't tripping!

But this is probably true... The guest knows the topic very well but in a more "scientific" way, and everybody knows scientific method can explain a lot of things but living that thing in the everyday life is often a different thing. You can trust this simply watching his video about microdosing, he said he did a period microdosing for 5 days a week, but the guest simply said he know about only 3 days trips... And this is why he did not agree with that sentence

By the time most people are 30+ there opinions and beliefs are mostly set in stone, it becomes very challenging to change there perspective on things especially when it's there 17 y/o son experimenting with drugs which they have been taught and told are dangerous. It's always worth a go in explaining these things to your parents but don't feel alienated or down if your parents reject your ideas over the subject. Also I'd love to throw my personal opinion in, you can take it or leave it at the end of the day it's just my view but I'd recommend staying away from psilocybin, lsd or anything within the same category until your older around 23+ scientific studies have 100% proven that our prefrontal cortex which deals with planning,decision making personality expression is not fully developed in most people until around 25 years old. This is also why I disagree with this directors message "that it is not about age its about maturity" age and maturity come hand in hand both biologically and externally though the knowledge and experiences we have over the years. I'd also say psychedelics should be used purely as a tool for growth and healing and at 18 or younger most people use it purely as a lets get high and trip mannn or as a fun experience with friends. Psychedelics imo should not be used as some recreational substance so please try before you take anything ask yourself why you're taking it.

In my opinion, I feel like people should at least graduate high school before trying psychedelics. Being a teenager can be so overwhelming and stressful as it is so I feel like adding a psychedelic into the mix could be dangerous. Again, this is just my opinion.

I think I agree, I'm glad I waited until my mid 20s to start, but I also was so lost and confused until then. I really can't tell if I'd be better off for starting younger or if I would be an even bigger mess for trying it while my brain was still in development. I know a couple people who started young and seem to be doing well today, but they also seem like they were already pretty well adjusted and mentally healthy as teenagers. I wasn't and stayed away from all drugs because of that, but maybe I would've been better off for trying these things back then. Hard to say what these things do to young brains, especially young brains already prone to mental illness

Yeah I just don't believe any high school student is mature enough to be doing the drug for the right reasons. Kids that do acid are likely doing it as a way to rebel or to distract themselves from trauma. Maybe it's asking too much, but I think everyone should have a self improvement type of mindset when doing any psychedelic drug. If you are taking acid to 'get fucked up' you shouldn't be allowed to.
