Longboarding is the first sport I chose and invested in, 4 years ago now. It indeed helped me beat depression and fight fears and always brings me so much joy. Sometimes it is really tiring to see people on the internet going nuts over judging things that were just meant to give us a good time. It happens with games, sports, movies, series and such and communities like this are really inportant to have a break and just chill seeing people loving something

Glad your doing well homie! I'm right there with you. Skateboarding saved my life as well, combined with the music the artist NEFFEX releases. I'd highly recommend everyone check out his KZfaq channel. All amazing motivational music I feel every single human being can relate too. Besides, who's seen an artist write, produce, sing, and record a song every 2 weeks? Totaling 223 copyright free songs so far, of all different genre/musical styles. Everything is rhymie though.

Penny boards are like Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. I'm 61 and I know for a fact, that for decades...PBR was a ''bargain beer" that older, blue-collar guys with little money drank because it was always on sale. That is until the Hipsters discovered it for the same reasons and now every guy who wants to seem cool, gets a prison haircut and drinks that crap like it's champagne. It's just an aspect of a niche culture. The people I see riding Penny boards, ride them EVERYWHERE, regardless of the weather. The fact that they don't have to care if they ride through a puddle in a rainstorm, is what they seem to like about them.

My first board was a plastic blue "Coyote III." Not quite a Penny, but not what I thought of as a "real" skateboard back in the 80s. The fact that it had a hole in it where you could insert a handlebar and turn it into a scooter didn't help my ego, so I had to remove that immediately. Still, it served a purpose and got me off to a good start. But, you know... kids can be real a-holes to each other and will roast you for anything. So... I feel like part of the perception problem with Penny boards is that skaters wanted to get away from the whole "Z-Boys" look that dominated in the 70s. For as rad as those skaters were (and just try to tell me that skating downhill barefoot on a wooden plank with clay wheels wasn't borderline psychotic), there was still this sniff of it being corporatized thanks to having teams and organizations dedicated to regulating skateboarding into a sport. That was just bound to crash, so it's no wonder it did by the end of the decade. It made skateboarding look like a giant fad. And, since Penny boards are pretty much a throwback to that scene, skaters stopped taking them seriously. Now, it's the 80s. Skaters wanted an edgier, more punk look for skating -- and dayglow neon graphics on giant decks were, somehow, just the thing that fit the bill. It's the era of vert. Things are getting more extreme. Ollying is invented. Polyurethane wheels have completely changed the game. Skaters are pushing the edge in ways that were previously unimaginable. It's only a matter of time before... everything crashes, again! Enter the 90s... Tiny wheels, double-kick decks. Street skating to hip-hop in baggy pants. Those Vision decks are old news! No one does vert, anymore... The X-Games have entered the chat. Meanwhile, 6 to 8 years later, feels like a good time to crash, again, and start skating a new way... Which brings us into the longboarding era and where we are now with surf skating. These days, I know a local guy who pretty much straight up refuses to ride anything other than a Penny. I asked him if he wanted a wooden deck, once; He just loves his Penny. And, honestly, after trying it out and riding it around for a few minutes, I definitely get the appeal. They're very carvey and a lot of fun, but kinda terrifying at the same time. I eventually bought the wooden equivalent of a Penny (technically, it's a nickel board) and loved riding it with the Waterborne adapter for a few months until I decided I wanted to try something else. And, ultimately, that's what it's all about; having choice. We don't all have to have the same look, or ride the same style, or same kind of skateboard. It's like, we've gone full circle, and skaters are ok with going back to the roots and re-imagining what's cool by cherry-picking from different eras, so it doesn't surprise me at all that Penny boards have die-hard fans. And that really is rad.

I highly highly suggest building and trying out a 22"-24" Mini Cruiser or penny board Surfskate setup with 4" hangers and 85-90mm wheels, and either a Yow Meraki or Carver C7 or similar up front. Cal 7 makes a sweet little Rocket Mini Cruiser that has 4.5" hangers that will also work. The short hangers will directly swap onto a Meraki. This setup is SO much fun and surprisingly stable for experienced riders. Just added this to my quiver and it's a keeper. 90mm wheels roll so much better than 70mm for general street cruising and look insanely awesome on such a small setup!

I rode a penny in college everywhere it was hella convenient and i gained hella board control. I would always get comments how I even rode it in the first place which lead me to believe most people have preconceived notions about what counts as skateboarding without ever dedicating time to skateboarding themselves. When I did actually skate with the homies i would sometimes ride the penny to spots to save my legs on those crusty east coast city streets. I've never had somebody say some funny shit about it unless they didn't actually skate. I swear its the people who claim it the most who do it the least and make up these funny rules about what it is and what it isn't.

A penny board got me back into exercising and gave me a new outside hobby. I bought a cruiser longboard more recently and that feels better to ride overall, but the penny being small and easy to carry around is still a big reason why I would take it with me sometimes.

My Dad had a blue fiberglass penny board. I tried it as a kid and pushed around. Now when the other kids in my neighborhood got Powell and Vision Boards they ragged on me and the 70s penny board. I got sad and wanted those nice decks. My Dad told me why do you care. Just get on the board and push around. It's fun. I kept getting poked fun at and stopped to try something else. Looking back my Dad was right I shouldn't have cared. It just sucked getting ragged on.

Yes they should exist, I have a regular board and a penny board, and depending on what I'm going I'll use either, like for cruising at parks, stores etc there's fast and slick and portable and if it rains it's ok. Now at the skate park or street skating or big hills I'll use the other board

It's funny to me because on one hand, skateboarding is all about individuality and self-expression, but on the other hand, it's always had a locals/core/hardcore gatekeeper mentality as well. Pretty much the entirety of my skateboarding life from like 94-2005, it was all popsicle decks between 7.5 to 8 inches wide, and if you deviated from that you were being eccentric or some 80's gnar dog. That was around the time I discovered (from snowboarders, not even guys who only skated) that there were companies other than Sector 9 who made different boards and people were doing other kinds of skating. If that hadn't happened, I might have just stopped skating entirely.

Well said. I got back into skating decades after setting it aside as a kid, and man, how depressing to see what a lot of skate culture is all about: tribalism, hypocrisy, negativity, judgmentalism, people hating on stuff that used to be normal and accepted in skating.... I love to skate but don't call myself a skater because I don't want to associate with that culture. Your take is way healthier and saner, not to mention welcoming! A lot more people would probably get into skating if they felt it was ok to ride any kind of board for any reason--i.e., not just popsicle boards for tricks, but also longboards, Penny boards, etc. for exercise, cruising, transportation, relaxation, mental health, whatever. No rules, just enjoy the ride!

When the pandemic kicked off. I was looking for a way to get myself out of the house and doing something physical. Getting a penny nickel at the price point was just enough to talk me into getting back into skating after my childhood. I just got home after completing a 200 mile skate Marathon, And while that board doesn't see a lot of mainline use in my quiver I have to give it the respect of being the catalyst. I also just keep one in my trunk of my car because it really can't get messed up by anything, And walking from your car is for chumps 😝

We're all just people doing stuff on a rolling plank for fun. If you have fun pushing through the city on a penny board, you're just as valid of a skater as someone doing kickflips down a set of stairs, skating gnarly bowls, or doing 100kph down a mountain pass with a car following 2m behind them. Any form of skateboarding is rad as shit, and we should try to encourage each other to become better, instead of trying to shame people because their flavor of rolling plank isn't lining up with yours.

In the 70s? You are so wrong... In santa monica, we were all DIY. Jay Stone from Blue Cheer brought out the whole stock of plastic Vitapact Hobie, à warehouse full. Hé lost money big on that ONE. Cost him more for the storage than they were worth ( didn't consider that there was a reason Hobie was selling out) He had to find a distributor to sell them to people in areas that only had sidewalks to skate on.

my beef with Penny boards is that they are meh quality and I like mini type skateboards and have one from Landyachtz. Penny boards are one step off of the 70's plastic mini schlock that was sold in the 70's. I was there and remember it well. Mini's are great if they are of high quality from top to bottom but Penny's are the epitome of mediocre quality

I never found much liking to penny boards but just as people being gatekeepers in other ways I don’t see the point of being too harsh on others. And if a cheap penny board makes one go deeper into it then it’s great those boards can be a cheap start into the more excessive skating
