"In the 1990's.... some feared that computers would erode personal privacy or even lead to a loss of human connection..." Ummm...They've done exactly this.

It's not about the hardware, it's about how you use it. You do realize you can literally not own a smartphone or accounts on social media? Ever since we uncovered how to make fire we've constantly been evolving in our tool usage. Yes you can burn things and use it for evil, but without it we wouldn't be here. Also, it's funny you talk about "human connection" when the majority of human connection pre-radio/phone/computer technology age was literally limited to your village/town. For all you cared you did not even know people with other skin colors existed in the world etc. Yes we had more "real" intimate connections, but we didn't have a global understanding of the world. Knowledge, technologic, it's all a pandora's box. Once you open it, it's done. That's the most important and critical detail. We simultaneously have infinitely more and infinitely less possibilities compared to our ancestors. We're stuck in the current age while preparing for the next one, while still reliving the old one. It's just the human condition. I'd say we should fuck around and find out in regards to AI. It's much more interesting that way after all. I'd rather humanity go out in a blaze than remain in constant bickering and murdering each other. The only way we can make progress is by shock therapy at this point.

@SnakeHelah I actually sort of like this line of thinking... Better to try and fail than to stagnate because of potential failure. That being said, we knew about other races and cultures long before the internet or phones. But that's because men like Marco Polo and Columbus were willing to take risks to learn. So yes, I could say the same applies to AI. The worrying part to me is the lack of personal relationships already with just the internet... When AI gets smart enough, we won't even know we're talking with real people there! Marriage rates, suicide rates, depression, and other mental health issues have all gotten worse as we lose human contact. Technology isn't going anywhere, so we need to learn how to use it without losing what makes us human.

I studied computer science because I had no clue what I wanted to do and a friend of my father was a physics lecturer and he suggested it, saying it was the future. This was in the late 1970s . the view in the academic world was that computers would improve life for all, we could all work less and have the same income but more leisure time. Instead we got the increased productivety but the average worker didnt get the shorter hours and increased pay for those hours. instead a larger number of people became surplus to requirement and a small number got very rich. Greed envy and hate became the norm. instead of being a universal good for all the computer age arrived at the same time as Reganite thatcherite political doctrine of Greed is good and look where that has led us. TikTok Facebook and Twitter, filled with unfiltered falsehood and moronic rubbish. AI can't do more damage to society than it has already suffered with the missuse of computer technology has already caused to society.

I have a BSc in CS from the late 80's - early 90's as a mature age student. I was at uni when the web was invented - we did not 'get it' and were not particularly impressed that a file could be transfered and displayed by a app called a 'browser'. In the 80's people were worried/excited about robots in factories. In the 90's people were worried/excited about the internet. Neither the nirvana or hell that was predicted by folks on either side came to fruition, employment levels stayed fairly consistent (ignoring occasioal recessions). Productivity went up because we had new tools, not because people were working any harder. In the same way one farmer can produce as much as a hundred farmers from 100 years ago. Personally I am grateful we have he new tools, I made a mistake when I dropped out of HS. Educating myself freed me from the soul crushing factory shift work and back breaking manual labour jobs I had been doing for 15yrs. #0 yrs ago there were a lot of ppl in IT who came out of the working class, most are retired. Most people under 50 in the IT industry these days have come straight from college, they haven't experienced the working class first hand.

The first thing that caught my attention was the quote "Some feared that computer would erode personal privacy and lead to loss of human connection." And reading the comments, I see a lot of people saying that those people in the 1990s were correct, and it is true. I agree, People have lost human connectivity and personal privacy on their computers because they weren't taught how to properly manage it. I will argue that it is not the computer's fault that this has happened to people. It would be more accurate if people in the 1990s said "Some fear that people would lose personal privacy and connectivity with others because they don't fully understand it." I don't keep ALL of my personal data on my computer because I know that it's damn near, but not 100% safe. I don’t allow myself to get lost in the internet because I was taught and shown exactly what the internet is. The software, social media, ect... I learned how to be knowledgeable and proper with this technology. I think if more people were more responsible and more aware of how powerful a tool a computer is, they would not see it as dangerous. The internet is dangerous because bad people make it dangerous. People fear this new Technology, Including AI, with some very good reasons, but I only fear what PEOPLE could turn it into. The more you learn, the more you understand, the more comfortable and confident you are with it. Take some time to read and be open to learn.

How terrifying would it be to be traveling 100+ mph in dense fog? At least until it’s a “safe” technology. This is why I wish I could live longer than I’m probably going to. I want to see what we think of as everyday things like cars in the distant future because I remember when cellphones were s**t.

The boundless extent of human folly never ceases to amaze me. Nevertheless, what continues to astound me even more is the ignorance displayed by those who consider themselves superior to others. Intelligence, when devoid of wisdom and lacking awareness of its place in the dimensions of time and space, serves as nothing more than a mere tool, akin to a hammer. With it, you can either stir your tea gently or drive a nail firmly into the wall. Ultimately, the outcome rests entirely in the hands of the user ;-)

It LITERALLY did everything he said. It made us distant from each other in the firm of finding a partner for marriage. It took jobs from us in the machine and construction industry. It made us weak and vulnerable from life and inability to be around our families and friends.

in you into you stated that back in the 90's we were concerned that PC's might lead to a loss of jobs, loss of personal privacy and a loss of human connection. I'd say they have done all those things. Ask the people who used to work in automotive assembly lines if computers took away their job. Ask the average PC user if they feel that their privacy has decreased via viruses and malware. As for human interaction, this current generation who only communicate through texts but cannot look you in the eyes when they talk to you is proof of the lost human interaction Computers have done great things and no doubt AI will do greater things but at what cost? Kids today cannot think for themselves nor can they come up with original ideas.

A.I. in the hands of the corporate world will replace jobs, if laws aren't put in place now to restrict it you will see a future of higher joblessness and homelessness, I applaud the creation, but fear the outcome. Take away my right and ability to drive my own car and I will fight, harsher penalties for drunk driving, bad driving (how many stupid accidents does a person have to cause before their license is removed), plus most importantly yearly driving and medical tests for seniors ( that at 65 get many bonuses ) would solve most of the vehicle accidents.

The moment a particle is a wave; it has to be a conscious wave! Gravity is the conscious attraction among waves to create the illusion of particles, and our experience-able Universe. Max Planck states: "Consciousness is fundamental and matter is derived from Consciousness". Life is the Infinite Consciousness, experiencing the Infinite Possibilities, Infinitely. We are "It", experiencing our infinite possibilities in our finite moment. Our job is to make it interesting!

"We used our enginuity to make AI do the things we don't want to do." Sounds like a lazy way of living. When everything is just given to you and you don't have to work for it, you lose the value of what the activity means. Technological advancements have helped us bring ourselves to new understandings. And it's certainly helped us achieve tasks we normally would not have been able to do by ordinary means. But without it you lose the ability to think for yourself and make your own decisions. Relying on others to make them for you. Without that freedom of thought, you are bound to become exactly like everyone else. A "hive mind" so to speak. When you become like everyone else, nothing ever changes. If you don't evolve, the universe moves in without you
@SnakeHelah
@SnakeHelah 10 ай бұрын
Lazy way of living? You want people to spend most of their lives doing menial tasks so they could barely get by? Because most of the jobs that are and will be replaced by machines will be the most menial and repetitive of tasks. Also the most dangerous, etc. What freedom of thought are you even talking about? Freedom of thought while working in teh fucking mines, lol?
