As someone mentioned in the comments, the liability risk might be a little more than you'd want to take on. Every hand (business) that touched the aircraft will be sued if she ever crashed. You may want to consult with your insurance carriers to see if they'd underwrite your liability.

Painting the plane would be great , but be very careful. I’ve been in the aviation business since 1968 and have painted and seen lots of aircraft painted . Make sure to talk with some one who has done it before you do it . From stripping and preparing the surface to the actual painting . You have to remember unlike a car airplanes fly so weight ( paint ) and balance flight controls after paint is critical. But I know you guys can do it . Thanks for the video

agreed i have seen stall warning sensor tabs, pitot tubes, venturi tubes, etc painted on a plane or 2 and we had to resolve the issue. there is a lot of little things you really do not paint. We painted a few planes and then we would always get the guy that did not like our price and would have some auto guy paint it, then he would end up paying us to fix the things that needed fixed because it now did not pass inspection.

@@Thejohnnyoshow yup been there . I have so many stories of what can happen,gear won’t come down, windows fail inspection , media blasted panels that don’t fit anymore , rivet heads being sanded down and then have to be replaced,flight controls that have to be stripped and repainted because they have to much paint on them and won’t balance and all of these things happened at paint shops that’s all they do is paint aircraft . Aviation is a very non forgiving sport don’t ever forget that

@@mikekuczynski1552 Even something simple like sanding off a bit of difficult paint can cause problems down the road...that aluminum is alclad, meaning the outer layer is corrosion resistant but it's less than a thou thick, so when you sand any of that aluminum you end up with spots of corrosion that bubble up under the paint. If it's in an area you don't notice, you'll have a hole in your skin or panel before long.

My Grandfather built planes for the 30's to the space shuttle program, and always paint was issue with balance and weight with him going into a sarcastic tirade about the painters, so with that i dunno if robby should try this or not, aircraft repaints are harder than new original paint jobs. also stripping old paint off is a different process altogether as sanding the metal changes surface airflow, and bondo or body filler isn't an option on planes. I would turn the job down, seeing this is a big job that can turn into a many cans of worms pretty fast.

I was in auto painting for over 30 years and certified by most major brands. I saw a need in our area for aircraft painting and figured "how hard can it be"? So after nearly two years of EPA and other barriers, including building a paint-specific hanger, we embarked on the new career. It went great until 9/11 when the bottom fell out of the market. Ok, it's obvious that this particular project is just a one-off deal, but make totally sure that you understand that this is much much more involved than painting a car. To do it right the plane must have all control surfaces removed, stripped and rebalanced. Non aircraft folks don't understand the effect of the extra weight of new paint if the old finish isn't removed or the danger in simply a 'scuff and shoot'. If you paint the wheels on a car and don't tighten the lug nuts the driver can pull over to the side of the road.. If you screw up any part of an aircraft control systems it can fall out of the sky.. There are too many little, but critical, details to convey in this format but as good of a painter as you are i recommend against doing this. I'm sure you can do it, but is it worth it?

I've upholstered a few smaller private planes, and even they needed proper paperwork in their log books for fire retardant material and burnability. Also weight savings at every turn. Like a lot of others have said, really assess amount of liability for your company. Great thing that they are doing for veterans, but it's a big job. There are two companies near me who do jet refurbishing and rebuilds. Everything done is all in house. Good luck in your decision.

@@mikeworkman3593 because when it comes to aviation it's corrosion control not looks, so if it is not painted correctly and the metal is exposed to the elements the strength of the metal is compromised. Plane came from the factory in '69 with cold lacquer. The current paint is some kind of polyurethane or modified polyurethane. It can be painted with base coat clear coat if desired. Paint designed to adhere to aluminum usually works best. At current rate, it will be 3-4 yrs before this 401 is ready for paint.

Robby and Layton Auto Body crew...you guys painting the Cessna 401 would be cool, no doubt. But before you commit to stripping, prepping and painting it just make sure you check into all of the technical, FAA and such requirements on dealing with the rivets, methods used, chemicals that can be used, etc AND all of the steps, materials, paint and so on. If it isn't too complex, involved and difficult...go for it, it would be very different and unusual, a unique project and content for your channel. I like cars, trucks, cycles AND airplanes...and a 1969 twin engine turbo Cessna that hauls multiple passengers is cool. ;)

First I have to say I do understand Robbie’s desire to help. The problem with this plane though is the last thing anyone should be worried about is painting it. I work in aviation and I can tell you this particular plane, a Cessna 401, is a money pit. And it will take every dollar they can raise to get it 100% airworthy again. When and if it ever reaches that point again, where it is safe to fly, then maybe you worry about painting it. If you have any money left. A common statement in aviation is if you want to make a little money in aviation start with a lot of money.

Had a client some years ago who operated an aviation paint shop. As far as i remember him telling me, aircraft paint differs from automotive paint vastly in that it is formulated to work in extreme temperature variances, remains stretchable (a big plane can "swell/grow" quite a bit when pressurized up high), the weight (less) and coverage (high) also differs quite a bit from automotive paint. Then there is also a lot of prep (back to a green plane) that is very specific to aviation with many regulations. As with every skill, it can be learnt. You just need to figure if the juice is worth the squeeze. On a sidenote: Many of his customers used aircraft paint on racecars applying only a single coat to shave a few extra pounds off.

Don’t get me wrong, it’d be interesting and I appreciate you wanting to volunteer for the cause, but I don’t think that plane “needs” painted. It was detailed on the AMMO channel and had some thin areas, but overall looked really nice for a FREE airplane. I think overall it’d be a very long, drawn out project with a nightmare of rules and regulations.

Painting aircraft is so different from automotive! I have seen automotive painters write off aircraft. But the 401 is pretty basic. I’m so keen to see this! Do it Robby!!!

It would be pretty sweet to have the plane painted, but I agree with other comments below. Painting an aircraft is no small deal. Stripping the paint is a major issue as well. Much of what used to be done with chemical strippers has gone by the wayside due to EPA issues. Painting over the existing paint is a no-go due to the added weight. Consulting with aviation paint firms is a must do and when all is said and done, a new weight and balance will be required after painting. Our unit in Germany used to own the USAREUR paint shop and we painted all the US Army helicopters in Europe. Dieter Kosiel (an escapee from East Germany) ran the paint shop like a well-oiled machine and did superb work. Good luck and I'm sure it will look great.

I love watching your channel and I followed the airplane series so I was surprised to see you there. It's a great project but it will be way too big in my opinion it will probably last way over 6 months to finish and it's just not the content I my self would be interested in, but if you want to take on the challenge all the best to you. Another one you could take on and one that would be way more doable is JerryRigEverything's electric HUMMVEE, he's planning on painting it and he's from Utah. Anyway good luck with whatever you choose!

as interesting as this would be, i don't think you should do it. A massive undertaking and something you'd be working on for ages at the expense of the many smaller projects you undertake (our attention spans aren't good enough for a plane with thousands of hours doing the same task). You have many smaller projects to keep us interested, and maybe another collab that won't be such a massive massive project will come along.

@@joseywilds3133 how do we go from talking about painting a plane. To that's probably how you vote. F the consequences. I mean I could be like you and say. Your mom didn't think of the consequences. She should of swallowed but she didn't. Now we have Brite intelligent people like you in this world that can just try and twist and turn anything into something bad. Good job your a real stand up kinda guy. But I won't go their. Now if you wanna have a conversation about why you and a lot of people think it's a bad idea to help this guy out and paint a plane that's going to end up running rescue missions, and fly U.S. veterans to different places for different reasons and help just about any foundation out with transporting what ever they need to help them with their cause. I would be happy to hear it. As I see it if it is going to help out any veterans from the USA I would say that's something they deserve for what they have sacrificed to keep the USA what it is today. And as far as robby painting a plane. Everyone is acting like it going to destroy everything he has. I think just the opposite. That plane is big yes but is just like painting a vehicle. Same steps just a lot bigger of a project. And if everyone's problem is that it's a plane not a car or truck or jeep it not a vehicle. Just remember that a lot of your performance parts that go on any vehicle on the road. Where more than likely an evolved part that a pilot or aircraft mechanic came up with. A lot of performance parts are things that veterans came up with. In WWII Pilots and their mechanics where always doing thing to the planes to make them faster and faster. A key to a dog fight was being fast and a good shot. When they came home from the war. They didn't stop messing with motors and start serving burgers. They started making street race cars. That's how the mustang got so popular. Just about every house wife got one while their husband was fighting. When the men came home. They started making performance parts for them. So planes and cars are very similar. I don't think it's that big of a deal. It's for a good cause. And if anything it's going to get robby a lot more followers for sure. And we will be closer to having that charger giveaway. But hay if I win it I will pick you up and take you for a ride my friend. Lol

@tegimr
@tegimr Жыл бұрын
Just like that. No. No worries about 'saving face.' Better to say no and save face by doing so. Painting an auto is a beauty coat that preserves the body. Painting an aircraft can change how it flies. Not following FAA regs can make the plane fit for a museum rather than service.

It's funny how I watch both channels for a long time but both from different worlds and I have donated to the 401 build through go fund me and now I am watching both worlds colliding and I never thought I would see Robbie helping the aviation world. To tell you the truth, Robbie looked overwhelmed and a little nervous about taking on this project and didn't want to disappoint with saying no. Robbie, not a single one of us would be disappointed if you said no, we all understand, but if you do do it, make sure it isn't going to interfere with your own family life and business, if it can be done and you feel confident on doing it then we are behind you as well. Make the right decision and choice for yourself Robbie and family.

I've been in aviation maintenance for 20+ years and currently work at a maintenance facility as an inspector that also paints components and will do touch-up jobs on airframes. Our company bailed out of painting entire airplanes about 10 years ago because it wasn't paying off. I'm not going to tell you not to do it, but I will tell you to be very cautious with your decision and make sure you research what it will take. There are A LOT of things different about painting airplanes including liability. I've seen the comments on sanding rivets, all true, that's why most shops chemically strip. Also keep in mind that preparation is the most important step, the speeds of airplanes can rip off a beautiful paint job if not prepped properly.
