Thanks for the video as it is thought provoking. Building a base with low HR for your heart in another sport is good, like cycling. Running, rowing, cycling and other sports need to be used to avoid overuse injuries from skiing, for some of us. I would suggest cycling over the same trails as X-C skiing, as you will be rolling up hills, working hard on the uphill just like skiing, and tucking in just about the same spots. Running, unless done on soft terrain has sideline many, due to leg injuries.

Very informative and useful video! I also imagine cycling can help one understand and practice the importance of maintaining flow over undulating terrain, that is using the downhill energy to assist with the uphills. Additionally, cycle racing has a lot in common with nordic ski racing. Getting accustomed to racing in a tight peloton, and effective drafting. None of these really apply much in running. Some say skate-skiers can benefit more from cycling, but classic-skiers benefit more from running. I think that was addressed some in the video. Thanks!

Even at low intensities, cycling builds far more muscular endurance in the legs than is necessary for skiing; it becomes quickly not useful for that purpose. IMO it really boils down to allowing you to add more volume at any intensity while avoiding injury because it has lower peak force loads than skiing. The secondary benefit is it builds more type I fibers in the legs while zone 2 roller skiing builds too much type I fiber in the arms. Due to the imperfect connection of the skis on snow, you would much rather have more type I in the legs and more type II in the arms.

I think if you are not professional and working a full-time job, some mixing might be good, just for overall health.

Skiing and roller skiing are the best obviously. Everything else in moderation but variation is good for keeping it fun. Most XC skiers would benefit from some form of extra upper body conditioning.I think swimming could be useful. Use a pool buoy between the legs and only the upper body is working. Who's the Babe ?!

Running is much better than cycling, but cycling is good for longer endurance workouts because of less stress to joints. Like your videos, keep it up. Thanks

A good video! I think cycling is smart training because its fun, but if you do too much cycling you never will become olympic champion in skiing, because the big cycling teams like Visma Lease A Bike will sign you so fast that you barely has time to become junior world champion in 20 km cross country skiing (skate). I like that Jørgen Nordhagen is evolving into the cycling elite, but I really would like him to go Skiing World Cup too. And I would like too see Visma Lease A Bike going Skiing Norwegian Chamionship Relay. Per Strand Hagenes, Johannes Staune Mittet and Jørgen Nordhagen might be sensational.
