Should you buy a Golf MK 7 R in 2020 | Joy in cars review South Africa .
The golf R was introduced into the market in 2013 as the bigger and more aggressive brother of the Golf we know and love. It is classified as a small family car; that description sounds a bit off for me considering how driver-focused this car is.
The MK7 has not failed to wow audiences since it made its advent. It won World of the Year in 2013 and scooped many other awards worldwide. The Golf name has been part of our lives for over 45 years and it has easily knit itself tightly into our daily lives. The bolder Golf R solidifies the relationship we have had with the car all these years by adding some very important features. This model that we are reviewing boasts 206kw of power and has an output of 380Nm of torque which all mean the Golf R can sprint from 0 to 100km in 4,9 seconds. The car is limited to 249km; that’s a good thing because this car picks speed so quickly you would land in trouble every week if it was not limited.
The car plays the Clark Kent role quite well in moderate speeds using just the front wheels to pull, but just floor it and Superman is summoned!! All four-wheels come to the party. The exhaust burps go off, the suspension tightens and the shove on your back reminds you why this sport car is so loved.
The interior finish is plush; you get sport leather seats, thick leather steering wheel, an intelligent infotainment system, wide sunroof and one of the best sounding sound systems. VW made two claims that I had a problem with: firstly, that this car was a small family car, and secondly, that this was a rival to the BMW M1 and the Mercedes Benz A45. I must say, though, that after driving it VW’s claims were quite accurate. I love the car and am now trying to find ways to make room for it in my garage. What a car!
