This is a great video. More of these explanation videos as well as get on the lane and show us the difference with bowling balls and this will differentiate you from all the other bowling channels bc this is something the community is missing.

I remember reading about Mikey breaking records by shooting 300 when he was only 10 years old way back when. Nice to see he’s still heavily involved in bowling.

Good explanation, thank you! I keep one heavy oil ball around, but not always in the bag as I never get to use it on my local league shot as the oil is not heavy enough. I use it when I bowl tournaments at other places with heavy oil.

Excellent synopsis!! League friends ask me stuff like "what does X,Y,Z expression even mean. " The variables on any one center to another...or even down to the single lane itself compared to its neighbor, are massive. Lane material, New or Older. oil type/brand, Not to mention the way weather can massively affect all of the above via ambient temps outside, humidity level and several other factors that can alter the first set of factors slightly. Pin type/brand/ construction and age. Weight. Reactivity. What brand of lane machine. How new or old is it. worn or fresh brushes and clean applicator heads or not. And all one can do is get real ZEN and watch to see how the ball is reacting as time progresses.Knowing about when to make a change or a shift...Sound like I'm talking about Nuclear Fusion level stuff....but its just bowling.

The timing of this video could not be better for me! I've been researching a heavy oil ball for a different alley that feels heavy or like glass with my current arsenal. The Super Nova was on my radar, and then I saw this video explaining the difference. It turns out that house pattern isn't "heavy" by your definition. Its a 42" pattern, but not heavy in MLs. So it's stretched out thinly and make it feel heavy. Maybe I don't need that Super Nova after all, but maybe a bit more practice there adjusting my speed, or position instead....for now anyway. Thanks for putting this together!

I can barely tell the difference between my Global900 Burner and my Storm Super Nova on my local house shot. I thought the ball reaction would be much different between the 2, but it’s extremely subtle for me anyway. Great video, now I need to ask the front desk if I can get a lane graph or figure out what the pattern even is.

Very good information for me as a speed dominant bowler that basically can make every pattern into a high volume pattern, in terms of ball reaction/motion, since my strengths are at the end of a block, when the most amount of depletion has occurred. However, rev dominant players, like those seen on the PBA tour, are best in the fresh and when transition stretches a pattern but doesn't deplete it. Those rev dominant players that can also increase and decrease rotational axis also have more advantages than any other bowler on the planet.

For me, bowling mostly on a house pattern at a bowling center that typically hooks quite a bit (a little drier?) .. my Proton Physix is really as strong as I ever need and typically only good for the first game on league nights. After that I usually have to move right into my Zen Master or Radical Innovator balls.

Bought a Storm Trend....took it out for a spin for the first time today. Reved all the way down the lane everytime and couldn't get a hook or any type of shift...basically just rolled straight. Right after the first shot it came back so oily that it almost slipped out of my hand smh. So long and heavy at 60 is what I'm thinking. Not so fun.

Coming to South Point for sweeps in 2 days from OC cali (Noon saturday start so prolly burn?) 5 man teams and I have a bad hip so I don't get to take many warmup shots before we off n rollin. Lowish rev, med/high speed bowler who loves starting 6-arrow down & in. Aresenal is Super Nova polished, Alert 3000, Marvel Maxx Tour (Nex Hybrid pol.), iQ NanoPearl 3000, and iQ Emerald pol. Guessin the S nova won't even be in play but which 2 are my best bet to focus on for the start? Thanx!!

Right now my two "heavy oil" balls are the Reality and Axiom Solid (Sanded to 1000). We did a tournament a last year or so, and the oil machine had a malfunction, and put out a 52' shot rather than a 42'

I was always told unless you bowl on long patterns, soup, or have alot of speed they are fine. For me throwing about 15.5 to 16 on house they don’t look that great, and there are better balls that will look and hit harder.

At my local bowling alley, I consider heavy oil when the ball makes your hands greasy.

Is it true that Brunswick lane panels play slicker than regular synthetic lanes. I bowl in the North East mainly New York but I have bowled out of state but it seems like they use a lot of Brunswick lanes. So when the lanes are slick in general what type of ball would you recommend for that type of environment? Also if what I said makes sense about the lane panels could you do a video about that and how to combat that? Thanks for your time.

That shirt is cool. And appreciate the attempt to try to clear up SOMETHING about the sport. There's a lot of old fudd terminology and knowledge that isn't relevant anymore, that clashes with newer age stuff (i.e. 'hold' and 'shim') and it makes it very difficult for people to figure things out. I wish there was a way to just settle on one set of terminology so that I'm not hearing from one person that their ball burns up, and another person is saying it 'bails' downlane, meanwhile others are talking about how their asym ball 'locks up'. And then they don't explain what they mean. Very frustrating for someone who is detail-oriented and is trying to learn how to play better and make better decisions while playing.

Oil volume ÷ distance = amount of oil per foot of pattern. Gives you a ratio.

How would you diagnose “heavy oil” based on throwing shots with no pattern graph? It has to be more complicated than “ball not hooking = heavy oil”. What specific signs are you looking for?

For a pattern like Great Wall of China that’s 48’ and 24 mL, would a weaker asymmetrical work better? Nova, Exotic Gem, RST X-2, etc?

Mike I have a question regarding ball choice any help would be great im a palm bowler no thumb and bowl standard league no tourneys avg about 170-185 over a 3 game span. What balls should I go with for my style, ton of hook naturally and throw about 15-16 mph. Need advice on a go to ball and a spare ball. Currently have Phaze 2, Hyroad Pearl and a Rapid Fire Pearl- Spare ball most help with as my style I suck as getting my 10 pin spares being a righty because of too much hook

If you need to ask this question, you should just quit bowling. If you are skilled enough, none of it matters. Sure, knowing what ball in your arsenal and their oil specs is good, but if you are talented enough, you can make any ball work. I was averaging 230-240 in house pattern and 220 on sports patterns. I just don't understand this new age of bowling. I don't remember in 2005 when I quit it being so technical.
