I review my Husqvarna GTH52 XLS garden tractor after using it to mow my lawn and to tow a small trailer on my property over the last 4 years. I compare the features and capabilities of this garden tractor to the entry-level John Deere lawn tractor that it replaced and talk about why a garden tractor is better suited for larger or hilly properties.
I review the primary features and talk about the pros and cons of this tractor. I also discuss how to fix some of the common electrical issues encountered, including the ignition switch, electronic differential switch, and light sockets.

4years? I've a Husqvarna GT 2254 garden tractor that has served me faithfully since 2006. Still going strong on the original mower deck spindles...amazing what regular greasing can do! Have done regular, routine maintenance on the unit, replaced belts as needed, adjusted things as needed. Original B&S 22hp V twin going strong, regular filters

They're pretty good mowers. I have their step-sister, a Poulan Pro (Made by Husqvarna) 46" cut with a 20hp Briggs single cylinder I bought new in 2010 for $1,800 and am still mowing with it today. In all that time I've replaced the tensioner pulleys once and the spindles once and I'm on my 3rd set of belts and 2nd set of blades. I did break one of the welds on the deck last year for the left rear hanger mount and had to have it welded back on. My deck came with a lifetime warranty as well, but the store I bought it from went out of business about 5 years ago, lol. It has "Cruise control" on the mower but I seldom use it. It mows in reverse if you turn the key back one notch after starting it and if you set the parking brake you can get off the mower without killing the engine. Just this year I swapped out the "quick change" oil drain with a permanent hose & bolt so I don't have to keep up with that clear plastic tube anymore (I've managed to lose two of those in the last 14 years). The hour meter just hit 351 hours on my last mow and she still fires right up every time I crank it.

couple comments on mine: The deck lift handle bent over time, so that the deck is now almost on the ground in the highest position. Also, the lift shaft from left to right apparently twisted, as on level floor the right side of deck is 3/4" lower than the left at the lift point. You can adjust to compensate some, but not that much. This week I intend to remove the lift mechanism to correct these 2 issues.

Thanks. Yes, a ZT typically cuts a bit faster, but a tractor is better for steep hills and adds a lot of versatility with towing or attaching implements. I have several steep hills that I don't believe a ZT could traverse, so a tractor was my only option, and I use it a lot for moving yard debris and firewood.

No where near the garden tractor we had in the 1960's and 1970's. They were scalded down farm tractors. You could pass them down to your kids because they were built to work and last. Miss them.

I agree; in my opinion the newer garden tractors are more accurately described as heavy duty lawn mowers. I personally would not attach any ground-engaging implements to this machine. Any work requiring a front end loader or heavy pulling would be better matched to a sub-compact diesel tractor with direct drive and stout frame.

I’m glad to hear you have had better luck than me with your Husqvarna mower. I purchased a YT42DXLS about three years ago. Cost me almost $4K. The best part of it is the 25 hp Kohler engine. I think they really skimped on spindle quality as well as wheel bushings. Many components on Husqvarna are shared with craftsman tractors. I’m not a big John Deere fan boy, but I have to admit my 25 year old. LT155 gives a much nicer cut. Thanks for the video. Happy mowing.😊

Yes, depending on the year and model, Craftsman riding mowers will be either made by MTD or Husqvarna (with minor Craftsman-specific add-ons). When I was shopping for my mower, I noticed the low-end Craftsman's were equivalent to entry-level MTD models, and the higher end were Husqvarna's. Besides the issues mentioned in this video, I haven't had any more problems, and the mower continues to be solid and used frequently. Thank you for your comments, as it's good to get different perspectives.

My John Deere was pretty much trouble free, but it had a light duty CVT transmission with a plastic case. I was working it hard and became concerned that the light duty transmission wouldn't last. Thought I'd move up to a garden tractor, but the JD's were too expensive. This Husky's was cheaper, but lacked some of the nicer JD features. All in all, it's been a good tractor for the price. Have had some minor issues with the electrical connections and such, but the major components are solid and should last a long while.

I have a Husqvarna YTH24V54 / 24-HP / 54-in mower. I am glad I purchased the extended warranty for it, because in the three years I have had it it has needed constant repairs. In fact, it is going into the shop tomorrow. But after this repair, I am going to sell it while it still has a year left on the warranty. I just purchased of John Deere x570. A lot more expensive, but I am sick and tired of the unreliability of the Husqvarna.

As far as your throttle control goes, it may have been set wrong at the factory. You can loosen it's clamp down at the engine and reposition it so that there's more response. It's just one screw clamping it in place. My gas tank is under the hood behind the engine and I don't really need a gauge as since I've had it 14 years I know I can get 2 and a half mowings done before I need to refill the tank. I like that my tank is behind the engine as it makes it much easier to remove the drive belt from the hydrostatic transmission when it needs replacing. I just take out my battery and battery box and the transmission is right there. I've not had any problems with my ignition switch and my blade engagement is a manual lever in front of the steering wheel. I replaced my 1156 headlamp bulbs with LED's as well but the LED's burned out after about 2 seasons as the housings aren't moisture-proof. I've since replaced the old LED bulbs with sealed LED lamps that have a clear housing over the LED's themselves and hopefully that will make them last much longer. They're on Amazon and called Auxito 1156 LED bulbs. While my mower has no ammeter, if it did I think I'd see if I couldn't swap it out with an aftermarket volt meter which will show you how many volts your alternator/generator is charging at.

On the Kawasaki models they have 15 amp charging circuit so a 20 amp gauge seems appropriate. Remember it’s showing how much energy is going through the circuit so if you want to see it more active or read higher, just turn your lights on or change your phone to use more electricity and the gauge will then have more generator activity to show.

I have the TS 354D, which has many of those same features such as the locking differential. It has the Kohler 7000 engine, which has been excellent. One thing it does not have, is the gauges that yours has. I’ve noticed that Husqvarna has too many obscure models, with weird little differences like that. Some of them have the gauges or the high back seat, and some do not. For example, mine has the high back seat with the arm rests, and yours does not. I saw a different model for sale in Port Angeles a couple of years ago, and it was yet another different model, with a different engine, and it did have the gauges. If I remember right, it did not have the locking differential. One thing that does annoy me about this tractor, is that the bumper (it’s actually called a brush guard) end caps come off if you brush up against brush or a fence or something while turning. I’ve lost two of them now, due to blackberries and such, and it gets expensive for replacing them. One was destroyed by the mower deck, one time, because I didn’t see it come off. Mine also has the same crappy lightbulb receptacles. It fries the lightbulbs, and when I try to put a better LED bulb in there, it fries them in very short order.
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 24 күн бұрын
Yes, Husqvarna has a lot of variations with different engine/trans combos and options. I do have a high back seat with arm rests (not sure if it's the same as yours), but I removed the arm rests because they were always in the way getting on or off the tractor. I had the same issue with the bumper. I solved it by using a strong adhesive to glue the rubber end pieces onto the steel. They haven't come off in about 5 years now. The adhesive I used is called Amazing Goop; there's a link in the description. Fried light bulbs sounds like you may be getting moisture in the headlight assemblies. They are definitely not sealed well, as I get dust in mine.
@patrickflohe7427
@patrickflohe7427 24 күн бұрын
@@outdoorsinoregon Yeah, it probably gets in when I wash it, as I never mow in the rain. 😊 I see I made a typo in my earlier message to you….mine does NOT have the gauges. I’ll have to edit that. This bugged me because some of the lower end units without lugged wheels in the back, just splined wheels, had them. I added a trailer hitch that raises the ball height and stiffens the ball flange at the bottom of the frame, tying it to the vertical rear frame. I do really like the reserve tank, and have used it a couple of times, at least. Mine does NOT have the coveted 12 volt receptacle, and wish it did, to power my towable sprayer.

This tractor has the B&S Professional series Endurance V-twin engine, not the lighter duty Intek which has common camshaft failures. I haven't seen any common problems noted on this engine. I've seen a low number of complaints regarding oil consumption on this engine, but mine has been totally problem free for over 5 years of hard use, including mowing very high, thick grass and towing heavy loads. It always starts immediately and runs very smoothly with plenty of power. The engine has been one of the highlights of this model.

I have the modern version, the TS354XD, which is pretty much identical except it comes with the Kawasaki engine, a huge commercial grade seat, 54" Fab deck, and a few small upgrades like led headlights and such. I absolutely love it and it is quite surprisingly a beast! I have however done some extensive upgrading to mine as far as the frame, strengthening it in several other places, liquid filled Ag tires, wheel spacers, and wheel weights. I've also added electric everything like the sleeve hitch, Johnny Bucket, custom built brush grapple, and snow plow. I have practically every attachment you can possibly pull behind the thing. A custom mounted yard rack. My most recent add on was the snow cab that I've also upgraded with heat, work lights, and a heated seat cover (finally found a reason to use the 12v accessory outlet, lol). Overall I've pretty much turned it into a small subcompact and if you can't tell it is definitely my biggest hobby, lol! Some people like to hate on them, but It's never let me down in anyway. I think for the price range it's in it can't be beat and if you are like me it's a perfect base to build a very capable and fun tractor out of. Also the best part is... It's Orange!!! Instead of that puke green and yellow, lol!! Orange Tractor Pride!!!😄😄

Yeah, a new Husqvarna garden tractor is around $5K here too, which is almost double what I paid just 5 years ago. That seems like way too much for this tractor, but I haven't looked much at new models, so not sure if there are better/cheaper options.

I don't think that pointing out to folks that the ignition switch, locking diff, and headlights stopped working within the first couple of years is nit picking for a mower that costs several thousand dollars now. I guess you'd rather me provide a dishonest review and say everything worked perfectly?

@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 9 күн бұрын
@@teleguy5699 Ah, well it's been about 6 years since I was researching the different options. At that time, there were reviews which mentioned various complaints about Kawasaki engines in several riding mowers that I was researching. I saw much fewer complaints on Kohler and B&S engines at that time. But if you're not having issues, I wouldn't be too concerned. It could be they had a bad batch of engines at that time, or a problem which has since been fixed, or maybe just one specific model had some issues, etc. I haven't looked into this recently, but the comments I've received on this channel have been very positive regarding the Kawasaki engines in general, so I don't think they are making bad engines overall.

Husquavarna frames crack because the design is faulty. Craftsman used the same frame with ten year warranty on the frame. HusQuavarna only has a five year waranty. Now both are part of MTD and parts are unavailable for the frame wich is on back order. Three mowers with the same problem. Not worth it

It's a review, not a commercial. As a reviewer it's my objective to point out not only the positive aspects, but also the negative aspects of a product so viewers have an honest expectation of a product to make an informed choice. If you're looking to see a sponsored review where a product is presented as though there are no faults, there are lots of other channels to watch besides mine.
