Should you buy a shipping container pool?

This topic was a popular request on earlier comments.
Swimming pools have become a suburban status symbol. Not only are they glamorized in movies and tv shows, but youtube channels such as Architectural Digest showcase envy inducing swimming pools in the backyards of celebrities signifying luxury, leisure and glamor. To the rest of us, they are a symbol of prosperity and an escape from the daily grid.
But behind all the glamor, pool construction is actually very disruptive, it’s a laborious undertaking, and is pretty expensive. So when shipping container pools come along promising an all in one solution, where a box holding a pool and all the pool equipment can be simply delivered to your site, connected to your water supply and set up in just one day, it seems like a very appealing alternative. This shipping container pool company based in Australia repurposes both 20’ and 40’ containers. The containers are cut in half, reinforced with steel. The heater, pool pump, sand filter and salt chlorinator are tucked away on one side of the container. Steps lead up to a landing, allowing easy access into the swimming pool. The inside of the pool is made of a molded fiberglass shell which is smooth and nonporous. You can customize your shipping container pool on their website by choosing three different fiberglass shell colors and six different outside polyurethane paint colors. You can choose a standard chlorine pool, a salt pool or a mineral pool. They also say that if you are moving houses, their pools are fully portable.
The biggest advantage of a shipping container pool is the ease of installation. It’s a complete product, ready to be used. It’s not as disruptive as traditional pool construction, You don’t have to excavate earth and build retaining walls which can be very tricky when you’re on a sloped site. If, for some reason, you wanted to transfer your pool to another location, you could rent a crane and put it on a trailer to a new site.
But let’s look at all the disadvantages of it. First off, the reinforcement. The walls of the container are made of 3/16” sheet metal which cannot withstand the outward and downward force of water. Also, when these containers are cut in half, the corrugated walls are going to flex because they aren’t tied to the structural frame any more, so the top rim of the container has to be reinforced.
Waterproofing is another issue. Shipping containers are designed to keep water out, not to hold water inside. To make it waterproof, you can use a fiberglass insert like we saw earlier, or the container can go through an expensive conversion process where another layer of steel is welded to the corrugated walls. A pvc liner or a cement plaster lining is applied to the new steel walls. This extra layer also adds a considerable amount of weight to the pool so the foundation slab that it sits on has to be designed accordingly.
Next up, insulation. As we saw in the earlier video, there is no additional insulation around the fiberglass insert. If your shipping container pool is temperature controlled, it’s going to lose a lot of heat through the side walls. The earth surrounding inground pools provides more insulation than people realize and without it, the perfect water temperature can be difficult and expensive to maintain. Shipping container pools are best used over ground because steel can corrode underground. If you choose to place these pools underground, you have to pour retaining walls and a slab to keep the earth from pushing the flimsy corrugated steel walls in. At that point, you might as well have a typical inground pool.

I used to harbor a fantasy of owning an endless pool for doing fitness as you said here. The price was always a show stopper. Then I got to use one at my public gym. It was a disappointment, because I could easily overpower the current and swim right into the wall. I think that one was more for the underwater treadmill use. But the cost.. for $80 a month, I get 3 lap pools, a locker room and free clean towel service. I can do that for 16 years before an Endless pool is cheaper., if you don't charge for the water and heater.

I built my first 16’x32’ pool myself using a concrete slab, and I then framed up 48” walls from PT 2”x6” at 16” O. C. THEN I just sheathed the inside with marine grade PT 5/8” plywood covered with 1/4” rolled poly foam ( available in 48” x 50’ rolls) spray 3M ADHESIVE on the plywood and press on your rolled foam. Do all your PVC plumbing on the outside and back fill the pool perimeter with soil and use diagonal 2” x 6” PT BRACES EVERY 48”. Buy a standard 16’ x32’ vinyl liner and set up a shop vac on the skimmer side. Fill slowly and press out all the wrinkles. Then double up the vinyl at the top plates of your wall and top with Cedar or Redwood. You can build a walkway on top of your walls edge like a small perimeter deck right on grade. Buy a filter system and you have a nice pool for under 7500.00 in today’s money. My first pool was built 35 years ago using the process described. I sold that house 20 years ago and the present owners still enjoy that pool today. It will last a lifetime if maintained well. Sorry for the book, I thought you might be interested in an alternative way of building a pool. ✌🏻🇺🇸

deleted old dumb comment so that I could say this instead: Thank you for the description and assessment of your pool construction!
@Waveluth
@Waveluth 2 жыл бұрын
@@hamyncheese I saw your first comment and I just wanted to let you know that the pool I built was drawn out on plans for the Building inspector and a permit was filed for the construction. Plumbing, Electrical and construction Permits were pulled and all necessary inspections were done. It all passed the Code requirements with ease. It was overbuilt and 10 times stronger than any typical galvanized metal panels typically used on Inground pools. The concrete slab was poured over 48” footings with 4’x8’ metal reinforced mats. The slab could have been used to build a house on as they were dug in a 48” grid pattern. The best part was the concrete pour was done in a single pour. As the forms were filled it also filled the footings, making it a monolithic pad 8” thick. This is why it’s still in use to this day. The liner has been replaced recently I was told but it otherwise is rock solid. A 16’ x 32’ in ground pool can be built BETTER and stronger for LESS!! Thanks for the second comment. Now you know😃✌🏻🇺🇸✌🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Do yr own research, she's made videos about container homes that are full of inconsistency and some with complete lies ... She's supposedly an architect, but I;m a builder with my own company of 30 years and depending on the location and construction method containers can actually be affordable and simple to use as a building product - BTW the fiber glass liners in container pools can be insulated, so yet again this woman leaves out common well known details regarding construction method.

Ms. Carr, this is the second video I’ve watched from you. Absolutely helpful and informative. I’ve recently bought a new home and am moving to Florida. I’ve been looking at types of pools and spas and even container pool. I’ve pretty much set my mind on a sports pool/spa. Your input has confirmed my thoughts on a spa pool and it’s advantages. Again a very well explained, straight to the point presentation. Be well and stay healthy.

I'm sure that someone could make a shell for any other over-ground pool that makes it look like it was a shipping container once. It might cost a lot but enough money tends to make (nearly) everything a possibility ;)

We have above ground pools. They are easily installed and non disruptive. The best part is you don’t need a crane to lift it over your house (and risk dropping it) when you can buy them from Walmart and put it up yourself. Also they are like 100-3000 $ rather Then 25k

My friend has an in-ground pool. It came with the house. Expensive to maintain, and even being stuck home last summer in the pandemic, she went in like 4 times. The great thing about container pools is you can have them hauled away when you get sick of them. She probably won't even open it this year.

Honestly; seeing a house with a pool is a huge turn off for me (from an ownership perspective). I see a pool and instead of wonderful relaxation, I see *money pit*. Can't swim in it in the winter (not a cold [read: doesn't get below freezing] climate where I am, but outdoor swimming isn't something I do 6 months of the year) And the other 6 months of the year I wouldn't use it every day. So instead of something nice, I see 12 months of maintenance for 30 days of use per year. Not coincidentally we get 4 weeks of leave every year ... funnily enough I can just go on holidays somewhere that has a pool.

growing up in arizona, I disagree. That being said, seeing in ground pools in places like NY or illinois seems stupid and lavish. As for your personal opinion on using it, thats entirely up to you. I knew people that never used their pool but I also knew of people who would use it at least twice a week for 8 months out of the year. The maintence wasnt bad for those people because if you did a small bit of skimming once a week before using it, it would never become a huge issue. Biggest thing would be cleaning the limescale off once a year.
