In this video I speak about Via Ferrata Sets; what never changes from Via Ferrata Set to Via Ferrata Set and why we actually pay more for some Via Ferrata Sets than other (and no, is not for increased safety).

I am present! 😅🙋🏻‍♂️ I greet you and thank you for this video through which you showed professionalism, passion for this sport but also respect in helping your subscribers. Indeed, I asked you this question a few days ago following an incident I had on a trip. Ps: I'll buy the classic one, thank you very much!

Great video. The swivel does have an advantage, however, this will not replace hours of training on various VF routes. Fancy tools do not make a mechanic a good mechanic. There are many more important factors with VF, balance is one of them, as well as upper body strength, and flexibility. Thank you for the in-depth opinion. Jim

Great video, small correction. Over 120kg, the set will not break. But the absorber can't slow you down enough during a fall. (More mass = more energy) and the fall can be dangerous.

Hello. Thank you. And thank you for pointing this out. We both are right. It can or it can not break. It really depends. But you are correct in your assessment and thank you for pointing it out. For more than 120 probably one will need more stitches and longer webbing. Right? At the current length and density of stitches as you way the mass will create more energy than the stitches can take, you end for sure at the end of the webbing and once this happens the remaining falling force (not absorbed by the breaking stitches) will transfer to the whole system. In this case, based on the amount of energy the system in any of its points can break or not and if not, in that case a large amount of the energy will be dissipated on your body and here is where it starts to get bad for the climber. Right? If the weakest link in the system cannot take this dissipating force will break. If the system makes it, then the next to feel it and maybe suffer because of it is our body.

@@JetSetYourself Correct, but I don't think it's likely a set will break. Since every component separately should have a MBS of at least 21kN. (New and correctly used and stored)
@JetSetYourself
@JetSetYourself 11 ай бұрын
@rubyf1993 yes but the 21kN is about the static load. If you statically load something on the webbing will hold 21kN. But, correct me if I'm wrong, many sitting harnesses are only rated 15kN. Now, when you factor in the dynamic force generated by our weight during the fall plus the stress in the equipment (storage, usage, environmental impact) the breaking point is way lower right? Let's say it differently. Under static load (only gravitational force) they hold 21kN. But, the impact force is way larger because it depends on the momentum change on the unit of time. For a 60kg body and a 120kg body the falling speed is the same right? But the impact force is not. Will be double, right? It is true that at the end the impact force might be of only under 15kN and it is true that as you say the webbing might not break. But, you are still left with the other problem; the effect of the impact force on the body. In principle you might be right and the webbing might not break. But there is also a probably that it will certainly do (compared to certainly not when bellow 120kg). But, let agree to the fact that maybe in most cases at 140kg while falling into a Via Ferrata Set the webbing is not breaking. Let's say that I exaggerated. And let's resume ourselves to the other fact. If you are under 40 or above 120 kg the body will take enough impact force that the tamage can be severe and maybe irreversible. In such circumstances it is like falling into a static lanyard. Let's suppose the lanyard will not break but the impact force might seriously injure your body.

@@JetSetYourself Since we are talking about force (kN) this is valid for static and dynamic forces. But that aside, with a functional absorber, everything after the absorber should receive a max of 5kN. If this is more then something went wrong. Or the weight of the climber was too high for the absorber. Anyway, I enjoyed the video and can't wait for the next one.

Hi Mr Jetset, what do you think about Mammut via ferrata set/harness? Cheers!
@JetSetYourself
@JetSetYourself 7 ай бұрын
Hello Henk! Mammut is a reputable manufacturer. I own from there some carabiners, climbing rope, static and gym rope. I will have to make a list with all that I have from them. It is a reputable manufacturer that most of the times puts out there very good products. All Via Ferrata Sets (any manufacturer) are made as per the specs of the international standard. What changes from model/manufacturer to model/manufacturer is comfort and durability. Some wear (visually) faster (but this is subjective and depends on too many factors). Comfort is the main differentiator. The same for factor from one manufacturer might be more comfortable. In my case, I work very well with Camp. I like the carabiners from the more expensive models. I will never use the carabiners of the base model from Camp (in this case Petzl has better carabiners for the base model). Mammut tries to replicate the success of Petzl. Nothing wrong with them taking inspiration from there. I buy frequently from them. With trust.

Singing Rock also has a set with a swivel the Phario 360°.

I would love to test all of them. Also if I can get my hands on them to check their swivel engineering. Overall, I find the swivel to be a high performer in terms of increased comfort and enhanced anchor point transition speed.

My advice to a beginner would be to go to a proper climbing shop, get advice from the staff, and try the whole kit in the shop before you buy. It will cost a bit more but your life will be worth it...

I don't know if buying a Via Ferrata Set requires advise from anyone. I will agree to the point that putting together a Via Ferrata system my be better with advise from an experienced individual. I've seen people buying the correct gear but then installing it wrong or using it incorrectly. Experienced help is good as long as it goes to the end of it and teaches you how yo set and then use. If the experienced (in store as you suggested) help stops to only what to buy, that will not help. As I was saying, the protective equipment follows a standard and while we can use soft differentiators to justify buying one over the other in reality they all are capable of doing the job. The question of how to set and then use, remains.
