Should you Buy an Ooznest Workbee?

In this video, I'm going to discuss my impressions of the build process of the Ooznest Workbee. Here's a link to the CNC. ooznest.store/MCWorkBee Do I think you should buy an Ooznest Workbee? I was given this machine to review and was told to give my honest opinion. Had I felt the need to rip this company and machine apart it's likely I wouldn't have posted this video. The company would have had to really gone out of their way to leave a bad impression for me to post a negative review video. I prefer to share products on this channel that I have a high opinion of. This CNC happens to be one of them.
The build process is extensive and initially, I was a little overwhelmed at just how many bags of parts were in the boxes. That said once I started getting into the build I found it to be a really pleasurable experience. The directions and guides that not only come with it are great, but there is also additional info here including videos. Step by step videos. learn.ooznest.co.uk/c/WorkBee...

Many thanks for the kind plug ManCrafting ; ) I was kind of surprised seeing my WorkBee images in your video, and kind of honoured for being part of your fantastic review of the 'Ooznest WorkBee'. Should anybody consider buying a WorkBee from Ooznest ................... absolutely! I would say you didn't miss a single thing out, but I will add to that by saying Ooznest' after sales service is second to none. I had a supplied part that was badly engineered, I was directly on the phone to Ryan at Ooznest, he understood exactly what I meant instantly, apologised and sent the replacement part to me by FedEX .............. I received the part the following day. And I'm in a tiny village in central France! One hell of an achievement in itself! I'm glad you thought of including my 'modified' WorkBee images also, as I think that' one of the major pluses of the C-Beam system that the WorkBee is based on. No other CNC machine aimed at the enthusiast or Home Workshop is capable of being modified, as far as I know. Simply by adding extra C-Beam extrusions I managed to increase my Z axis cut depth, and increase it's stability. My latest 'upgrade' has been to install a spindle motor as opposed to using a trim router ( as you have, or my Makita router that can be seen in the image stills ). If I could also add, if I may ................ I have an excellent build on the OpenBuilds forum, should any of your viewers be interested > openbuilds.com/builds/workbee-cnc-build-my-honest-opinion-tips-and-help.6407/ I obviously gave you a 'Thumbs-Up' ; ) now off to see the rest of your videos ; ) TURK

@@ManCrafting Hi MC ................... Yeah, I do remember, but then again, a few people enquired about using some of my content that is on the OpenBuilds Forum. So what's next for ManCrafting? more videos? perhaps a look at the software that you're using? and why you choose it? As for me, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go the 'Vectric' way. After trying various free open source CAD/CAM programs ( all of which have their particular drawbacks ), I'm going to go for the paid option .................... I always thought there would be a good reason why they cost decent money! Now I know! Anyway mate, good job ; ) TURK

Ooznest thanks for watching and thanks for the opportunity to try this machine out. I was very impressed with the build directions. You don’t get that sort of guidance from countries that don’t speak English as their first language. You are often left to your own devices when trying to interpret what was intended. Also, finding out that you have Team/Viewer sessions if needed was an amazing benefit. Who does that?

Ooznest are cool. I had a slightly malformed part in my Ox kit from them that made it hard to fit. I mentioned it to someone else saying that I could get around the problem so it’s no problem at all. So I was shocked when I got a direct message from Ooznest saying they wanted to replace the part saying it shouldn’t have happened. Basically it was a 3D printed part and the print shifted slightly... wasn’t Ooz’s problem as the shift happened inside some screw holes which wasn’t easily apparent in black plastic. The new part arrived in a day or so and it was perfect. How many firms keep track of their customers problems like this and then go out of the way to fix the problem. Sadly, this was only a few months before the Workbee came out. If I had waited a few months I could have had a screw driven machine instead of a belt drive one... especially as the only real problem was belts coming loose and the faff around tightening them up. In the end I went dual belts and it helped a LOT. Then I made a Workbee style Z axis, replaced the side panels with taller ones, changed... well, you get the idea. This thing was a GREAT first CNC kit.

What I love is that they took care of you without even being contacted. This solidifies my already high opinion of their commitment to customer service. I also love that you have been able to make upgrades to your current platform. That’s a huge bonus. My first CNC is belt driven, and it’s been great. Can the OX be converted or upgraded to a screw drive? For some reason I was thinking it could.

@@ManCrafting Still experimenting. last item was a 6mm ply cut to make a set of parts that assemble into- a mounted holder for the machines essential tools and fixtures. Wooden numberal plaques for the local church pews, drink coasters for fellow Men's Shed members, toys for the grandchildren... When you have a CNC your view of every build changes. Making it on screen at your desk is more comfortable than in the workshop, and duplicates are simple. Wish I had got one years ago...Invested in Vectric software because it makes it a breeze. I could have scratch built the machine, designed a controller, written the control software but did not. Why? because I want to cut wood, not play at product design (I used to get paid for that). This is not only a good machine, it is well supported and easy to modify/extend. A very good bet for a hobbyist, capable and not expensive. Will get you going quickly.

Hey can i ask a question. The buying cnc router world is a nightmare I hope to be out of soon but dont want to buy the wrong machine. So in your view whats likely to be the main differences between a £1500 machine and a £6000 machine.
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 4 жыл бұрын
James Barratt which $6k machine? Software, setup, speed, tolerances. Lots of differences. Buy the machine that’s right for you. Right for your budget. Is it intended to be a hobby, learning tool, business? So many factors to consider. I have two that are similar in capability and the Workbee is a little cheaper. Takes a little more time to assemble. That said, either machine can pay for themselves in less than a month. Biggest difference would be that a larger more expensive machine can produce more, so in the long term it could be more profitable. It’s a tough call. I went through this with my laser. By something cheap or go with one of the Cadillac brands. I went mid range. I’m happy I did. It’s done everything I’ve thrown at it and has paid for itself over and over.

Being I do cad on fusion 360 and it has a cam package, figured that was everything needed bar the software to control feom the gcode the machine. Guess its that software you mean. So can you make big mistakes getting a kind of software which is difficult and full of glitches. Guess so but how to know whats bad. Laser. Is yours just for engraving or can you cut sheet steel with it too.

Skynyrd FPV I’d absolutely recommend it. It’s a solid machine. My shop has been getting reorganized for the past month so videos have been sparse. I have several coming up on this machine. The way you make larger signs is by adding registration points in the file. So the when the first section is done and you move the material it matches up perfectly. You can put some dowels in the waste board that the registration points will slip over so its truly in position.

Hi. The Duet interface is dead easy to use. This WorkBee is actually very good for what it is however. Watch out if you need accuracy. This one comes with an open loop system. I am having to retro fit mine with a closed loop set up as for my application the open loop was out by almost 2 mm on the Z. So if you can live with that, then this is a brilliant bit of product. If not, totally still buy it but leave yourself some money to upgrade to a closed loop system: Nema 23 closed loop motor + driver, Novusun motion controller, same limit switches, same 24v power supply, Mach3 motion control software. The way this has been designed is pretty good and I do recommend it. Ah, don't forget money for dust extraction gear.

Hey, thanks for your reply. The Duet also has a lot of additional features which are so useful, such as onboard storage of G-Code files, so if the machines disconnects mid-job, it will carry on running. We have also made our own interface for the Duet, which is CNC orientated.

What's the size of WorkBee machine shown in the video? Is it 1500 x 1000? If yes, wondering how the accuracy and overall performance of lead screw drive is working out on 1500mm length.

What happened to the promised review of the Open Build Mill and the comparison between the WorkBee & the Shapeoko? I haven't seen any CNC vidoes, on your channel, since this one was posted. Have CNCs fallen out of favour with you?

Really looking forward to a short comparison, I'm a student in the market for something to get me started with a side gig making stuff with a CNC router. Plus I would love to make more professional parts and enclosures for my electronics projects. So I might get a CNC and a 3D printer this summer, especially cause I'll have a lot of time with no summer job.

RICH MORGENSTEIN hmmm. Must feel good to be so superior. The point of me building this is to prove that pretty much anyone who is interested can build this. It took me longer than most because I was doing it 15 min here and there. So, getting back to where I was when I was interrupted likely wasted time. I just went to your channel to see the 2 hour Ooznest build. Amazing. Nothing there. Even after building two, I’ll bet cash money you couldn’t build a 3rd in two hours. But, 50+ years and 2 college degrees can make a person jaded. Unfortunately I can reed well enough to reed your condescending comments. Thanks for watching.

Pros and cons are subjective and I thought I gave a couple of reasons why someone would love or not like having this CNC. Such as just how many parts it takes to assemble. Some people may love/hate that about it.

There are chinese companies selling ozznest workbee replicas. They are exactly the same beside the controller. Those chinese replicas are even cheaper less than $1000. Frank youtuber bought one and has made a video of it. Frank beefed it up with centroid acorn controller and clearpath servos.

MySchizo Buddy personally, cheapest price isn’t always important to me. It rarely is. I prefer to support companies that will support me. I’ve never had a single Chinese company provide service after the sale. Ooznest will actually do team viewer sessions to get you up and running.

Hey, thanks for your reply. The WorkBee is an opensource machine, so we welcome other companies making it available through their stores and putting their own spin on it. However, when buying a machine from Ooznest you are not only getting a great product with superb customer service behind it, but also supporting further R&D to push the WorkBee and CNC Machining further and bring it to many more makers at an affordable price!

@@ooznest im curious though, are the workbee components manufactured in the uk, or does a lot of it come from china? I imagine it's unavoidable at this point to not have components come from china, but just curious. Seems like its definitely the sort of machine i would get to start getting into cnc, if i had the space.
@ooznest
@ooznest 2 жыл бұрын
@@ge2719 Parts come from all over. The main part, the aluminium extrusion is made in the UK, and a lot of the hardware comes from the UK. We also assemble a lot of the components ourselves, like the Power Supply, Touch Probe, Controller Setup, wires etc. We are on the Made In Britain Registrar. Thanks!

By the way... I bought it from bulkman3d.com , not ooznest. Ooznest copied it. I think. Maybe it's the same company. I don't know. And then, there's openbuilds. So it's kinda confusing now.

@ManCrafting

Great question. They have some sort of partnership. This design, the Workbee was designed by Ooznest. I think the router mount is sourced from Open Builds. If you look at an earlier comment Ooznest mentioned that they are an open source platform. Most of the kit is manufactured in the UK though.

Jeremy W from Open Builds site. “We designed this kit due to the number of requests for modifications of our OX CNC Machine Kit. We are offering a Full Kit, Mechanical Kit, Plates Kit and various add-on kits on our website. These kits can be found by following this link: ooznest.co.uk/product/workbee-cnc-full-kit/ Lots and lots of the parts on the machine come direct from Openbuildspartstore. Therefore, you can be sure you are supporting them :). Full disclosure, the extrusions are now manufactured by us in the UK, but this was due to it becoming unfeasible to ship the quantities we need from Openbuilds in the US anymore.”
