A good rule of thumb is if it's important for safety or labor intensive ( fuel pump) go OEM or top quality aftermarket.

I purchased an oil sender switch for my 2001 Jeep Cherokee from after market and it leaked oil out and destroyed my engine. Some things are better from the dealer. Especially critical sensors

pay $1 once instead of 90 cents twice. if your part is $250 and you can get it on ebay for $35, you're gonna have a bad time. there's no magic formula in that part except being cheaply built with inferior craftsmanship and materials. especially when it's a part for something essential, like a starter, alternator, ignition, etc....they can not only fail, but can even damage the car and cost you thousands to get it repaired. plus you can easily be stranded. then you have to pay the mechanic to pull that crap out, possibly repair something, AND do the original repair that you tried to cheap out of. i know the price tag hurts, but peace of mind is well worth it. if you need your appendix out, you pay the surgeon his $5000. you don't try to pay a dentist $500 to take out your appendix, right?

Your video was so well-done and concisely provided information and examples. Interesting to learn re his example of the Rancho vs Monroe shocks being owned by same company Tenneco and as Jay said, “OEM is not always the manufacturer of the replacement components.” I came across your video while seeking a video comparing between base / generic replacement parts between Advanced Auto, AutoZone, and O’Reillys, as well as any differences in quality of business between each. (As in which should I have loyalty to based on other factors besides quality of parts, but perhaps hiring practices / training / required knowledge of employees, etc)

I really like how you took the time to call the dealership and get a quote before hand. I’ve been doing that for a few years and what I’ve learned is it really depends on what vehicle brand you are dealing with. I have a 2007 Lexus and the majority of parts that I have needed for general maintenance such as oil changes brakes spark plugs is the exact same price whether I go to an aftermarket store or the dealership. I currently do parts at the Ford dealership and most of the parts are significantly cheaper by aftermarket. Thank you for making it a point to mention to always go OEM for very important parts such as engine or electrical. It is very important that only original parts are used. When I worked at dealerships, there are plenty of times if you came in with issues because they bought aftermarket electrical reaction components.

I had an old `85 chevy van the drivers door handle would consistently break off. One day we bought an OEM door handle and it costed $35.00 for it. It broke off in the same time frame and the part was the same as an after market door handle that costed $9.99.

I refuse to give any more money to a dealership. I use reputable parts suppliers and stores and stick with OEM or better. I have no problem buying on-line when appropriate from proven on line suppliers.

You should spend few more dollars to get quality and long lasting parts. Sometimes there’s only $10-50 difference. For example a Dorman knuckle for Lexus ES 330 is $220 aftermarket. A Toyota knuckle is $250 and Lexus is $270 OEM.

@Francois Camara .. couldn’t agree more but do your homework like you have in your example. Having said that, sometimes a few dollars more doesn’t equate to a higher quality. Well known aftermarket brands will fix the little things and/or improve upon the design so make sure to get those details. In the end… it’s your ride and your choice so if it makes you more comfortable to use the OEM… then use it! Thanks for your comment and for watching!

Aftermarket is the elegant term..Knock off is real term. Some things at dealers are much cheaper than the discount stores. Fluids especially are much cheaper at dealers Ive found, than discount stores. OEM parts will always fit right and usually work/ last longer. Ive never found plugs cheaper at dealer, but usually go to the discount stores for OEM plugs. I'd never buy brake pads, electronics, sensors, etc at the discount stores. (Also no such thing as "universal coolant" anymore)

Joseph, aftermarket is not always "knock off." Jay and I have both worked in the aftermarket for companies that supply "OEM" manufactures with "original" parts. We've seen situations where the "OEM" valves in Corvettes are actually made by a third party and GM bulk orders. The items are then labelled OEM.

If you are talking about fluids like motor oil, no place can beat the price of Walmart. Walmart has the cheapest motor oil anywhere. I usually use brands like Motul motor oil and their RBF660 brake fluids for racing so that has to be purchase online.

$8 to $9 less almost downplays it. When the part costs $9 that means you're saving 50% on parts by going aftermarket for identical parts. This is of course assuming a fairly consistent dealer markup/margin but having been in the business I can tell you this is usually this is the case.

I think that I f dealerships would lower their prices a bit on consumable auto parts they would earn more by sales volume, because people would prefer OEM parts even if a little more expensive than aftermarket parts. But their prices are so ridiculously high that they force customers to buy elsewhere.

Try to go to smaller private part stores and avoid the big chains. Your ALOT less likely to get wrong parts since they tend to be MUCH more knowledgeable than the big stores that fill their counters with warm bodies.

Would 1AAuto be a good place for ceramic brake pads & brake rotors? I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue SL FWD. The original pads and rotors are reaching the end of their lifespan. Im also looking at Oreilly Auto Parts. I am kinda skeptical because the TRQ rotors from 1AAuto are cast alloy while the BrakeBest rotors from Oreilly Auto Parts are cast steel.

@jfs1988 ....NO ! You should be using NRS, Brembo, Raybestos or Wagner. These are the top leading brands with those types of materials and are recognized as some of the best quality in the industry. At the end of the day, you need to do your homework and meet your needs and make your decision.

I am shopping a lower control arm from aftermarket. 1Aauto sells its TRQ for $125, while Rockauto sells a Moog for 188. They may both be made in China, perhaps using the similar technology. Not sure if the price difference is due to the materials. OEM may not have a good quality. The ball joint on my Infiniti worn out after 5 years, 60k miles, exactly the warranty! Good job, Infiniti! Since you mentioned 1Aauto, could you comment on their TRQ products? I also heard Moog does not have a good quality any more. All these make hard to choose.
@PartsCounterGurus
@PartsCounterGurus 3 жыл бұрын
@Lei Zheng , We have not reviewed any 1Aauto suspension products so we have no input in that regard. Keep in mind, they are a distributor and not a manufacturer. So, in our opinion you should go to sources that specialize in suspension parts such as TRW and Moog which would be equal to or better than OEM.

I sell TONS of Moog products including control arms and have had very good luck with them. I do have a customers here and there who don't like Moog for some reason. I have one customer who won't use them unless he has no choice because he told me he has had too many problems but I just don't understand why. We very rarely get any Moog warranties back. Most of the time if anything we get back its greasable ball joints. That's mostly only because people want greasable chassis parts but NEVER grease them and down the road they fail because they are dry as a bone and being 100% human neglect they don't get covered. If your not planning on greasing chassis parts you should go with sealed ones just my opinion. I think most of the people don't use them because of the higher price point but they make quality products in my book alot of which are made in USA parts including some control arms. The only thing I can say can be hit or miss are wheel bearing hub assemblies. I would go with a Timken or SKF instead. Just my two cents is all.

Most people fail to realize dealers dont make their own tires they use random tires like michelin and claim its their's but they will increase the price more than retail worth why the hell would u spend tires at a dealership when theyll charge a fortune for 1 when u can go to another place down the road like tire discount which is helllll of alot cheaper and better deals plus will always have better tires.

Where can I find the best aftermarket Toyota car head lights assembly ? Just as good as OEM.
@PartsCounterGurus
@PartsCounterGurus 3 жыл бұрын
@Billy Rivers , We used 1A Auto for a replacement on a 2010 Hyundai Tucson and they fit perfectly. You can find them on Amazon and the cost was less for the pair than it was for a single OEM assembly. We would not say they are the best but we will say we had a great experience with them and that was nearly 1 year ago. Still working fine. Good luck !
