Hey 👋🏻 In this video I talk through if Apple’s M2 Mac Mini is still worth buying in 2024, I’ve used this model for the past 10 months as my main computer for video editing, photography and even some gaming. I have put a lot of thought into the pros, cons and who this powerhouse is really for. I hope you enjoy the video.

No doubt one of best investment I made last year after using Mac Mini M2 with 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Opening over 50 Safari tabs, 50 Chrome tabs, few PowerPoint slides, Excel, Word, Spotify, Microsoft Teams, Photoshop for small image editing fly through without any sweat or lagging at all. For whoever already own monitor, keyboard, and mouse; then MacMini M2 is the best and beast machine.

I use a base 8gb Mac mini for a lot of professional video work and not once in the past year has it been an issue, it's weird to see people say the minimum you should get is 16 or even 24gb of ram, I think its overkill, but then again I don't have 50 things open while editing cause there's no point of that.

Fantastic video man. Now I'm really craving for the Mac Mini🤩 For something so small, it's such a powerhouse of a machine. I hope it goes on discount when the M3 Mac Mini releases, it would be an instant cop😍 You're right about the base model. Never get the base model. Just FYI, even if someone reading this doesn't want to pay for the 512 GB, you can also do the 16 GB with 256 GB, but get an NVMe drive for more storage and cheaper than having it internally. (They also make hubs that sit under the Mac Mini with a slot for an NVMe drive as well) Currently have the new Satechi hub with a 1 TB NVMe and it works very well.
@brandonkennedy

Fair call, however I think I read something about the speed being limited if you went with the 256gb storage👀 I’ve seen those hubs they actually look pretty cool, almost make it look like the studio 😁

I am praying about starting a church, and initially I’m looking for something that I can study on, make notes and print off documents for sermons. Later if it grows possible slides and perhaps some video/sound usage. I’ve heard mixed reviews. Do you believe the baseline mini would suffice for me? Or should I save up more and go with one with more processing power? The mini would initially be used in my apartment and possibly used as a home church computer. What do you think the life would be?

I'd like to offer another way of looking at cost. If this doesn't apply to anyone reading this, then fine. I just priced out the top level Mac mini M2pro with some add-ons and I'm comparing it to a base studio with one add-on. Now... different people use their computer for different things. I don't use mine professionally at all, but I do like to edit video and run docker etc etc M2 Max studio 32gb 1TB $2199 M2 Pro mini 16gb 1TB $1299 wow... that's a $900 difference..........but wait. I normally use my computers until they have definitely earned their cost. The current mac mini I have is the last intel i7-920 and it has 32gb ram. I have it dual booted with Windows 10. Still works great for both OSs. But I tried to run Whisper to create my own subtitles and it just couldn't do it. So I'm starting to run into things I want to do that I can't do. That is what always signals to me that its time to upgrade. I don't upgrade just because something new and shiny hit the market. I wait until there is something I want to do that I can't do. So I think of cost differential between two choices based on that cost differential spread out across 5 years. I normally keep a computer for more than 5 years but its a good round number for use in such a calculation. $900 / 5 years = $180/yr I have a Netflix account. I know that might be the end all/be all for some people but I never watch it... I just pay for it monthly for some stupid reason. My netflix costs $15.50 / month. So if I ditch the Netflix that I don't watch.... I pay for the cost differential between the two machines I spec'd above. And I get the benefit of a beast of a machine that will laugh at anything I ever throw at it....and yes, I think it will laugh at what I'm throwing at it 5 years from now. My point is.... most people throw away money on garbage that is not important to them but don't think about it because....well, its only $15/month, or a few things for $5/month. Think about that....each month, pissing away $5 a few times......that's the difference between a machine that will get the job done and a beast of a machine that you'll love each and every time you sit in front of it. And if you're like me.... I spend a lot of time in front of my computer. Just something to think about.
@brandonkennedy
@brandonkennedy 3 ай бұрын
I think that's a fantastic way of thinking about things and I try to spec mine so they last for a few years the same as you. I do think though that a lot of people struggle to justify that initial investment as they don't see it as an investment.. they see it as you said there cutting out their Netflix subscription or taking away their daily coffee or whatever it might be. You nearly have the two sides of Apple users, the side that need it for work or spend a lot of time in front of a screen and want a good experience and then the other side is people who want Apple because of what it may signal and they don't really care about specs. An interesting thought for sure though, thanks for explaining it so well!

Hi! I'm stuck between getting a Mac Mini and just getting a gaming PC, so I came here to ask everyone about it. I mostly use it for photo editing in Lightroom (maybe video editing in the future?), and some light World of Warcraft sessions. At the moment I have a 2022 Macbook Air, and it does the job decently until I open more than 50 pictures in Lightroom. That slows it down by a lot, and WoW overheats it super fast. So my goal is to sell it and see what I can get. My options are: a second hand Macbook Mini with 15gb ram and 512 ssd, or getting an 850-1500 euro worth of gaming PC.
@brandonkennedy
@brandonkennedy 2 ай бұрын
Being realistic the 850-1500 euro will go a lot further in a gaming PC and you'd likely be able to use Lightroom, game and have a great 'all rounder'. That said the Apple ecosystem is a fantastic thing once you are in there - especially with the AirDrop capabilities we have nowadays. I don't really game much anymore but I can throw some games at the mac mini and you don't hear a thing out of it - have you watched other videos with people playing WoW on the mini?
@cipriandita6406
@cipriandita6406 2 ай бұрын
@@brandonkennedy yeah, the Mac Mini pro (so 1500 euro) can handle the occasional WoW on high graphics really well, so I could get a regular Mac Mini with the first ram and ssd upgrade and be happy with it. That being said, the main reasons I want an Apple are air dropping the pics after I edit them, and having all my tabs open because I don’t turn it off at nigh. The tabs thing isn’t the end of the world, and I can send the pictures to my phone through WhatsApp, so I made up my mind. Already found a good offer for a very nice gaming PC, which is gonna be a glorified KZfaq and Lightroom machine, haha
@brandonkennedy
@brandonkennedy Ай бұрын
That's very fair - to be honest that's the best and worst thing about apple, their features within the ecosystem are that good (like airdrop) that they make you consider buying one for that alone 😁

I bought the M2 Pro Mac Mini with the 16GB ram and 512GB SSD. It's only $1099 if you buy refurbished from Apple and $1299.99 if you buy brand new. However after 3 months I sold it. I really started to look at things over the last 2 weeks on my Dell inspiron now. A big comparison here. Overall Windows PCs are a lot better. Here's a list of why. #1. The taskbar combines the menu bar and dock together with time, wifi, notices, volume, applications, all into one bar on Windows. #2. The dock is annoying in Mac as it doesn't cover all the way to the left and right and leaves open space not covered by anything. #3. Windows has over 500,000 games on Steam, Gog, EA, and Epic game launchers. #4. Apple doesn't allow any upgrades on there macs anymore, it's all system on a chip. No upgrades at all! #5. Only USB-C inputs. Some have thunderbolt 4 which is USB-C combatable. Some have 2 and some have 4. Only Mac Mini has 2 USB 3 inputs. #6. Mac requires a cell phone for sign in. Windows never does! #7. To quit an app on Mac, you must go to the menu bar, name of app, close program. In Windows it's easier with just X. #8. Mac doesn't have Window snaping to left, right, corners, and specific fit ways now in Windows 11. #9. Windows has the best graphics available and better frame rate than console games. #10. You get more inputs on Windows PCs. #11. Windows PCs cost less. #12. In Windows, documents, pictures, music, and videos files are already there by default in the file explorer. But in the Finder on Mac you have to enable these with settings in the menu bar. A big reason why Windows is better and easier to use and cheaper. #13. You can upgrade a Windows PC, you can't upgrade a Mac at all anymore. A big reason why Windows PCs are better.

M3 will arrive shortly, therefore it is best to wait. If you do photography or filmmaking, 32GB of memory is essential. 16GB isn't sufficient. So you may consider the Mac Studio with 32GB of memory, which will cost the same as the Mac Mini. But if tiny form factor is what you need, the Mac mini is great.

I recommend base model forget about 8GB Ram and 256GB storage go straight to 16/512 GB. Often if you are planning to work with photoshop and lightroom same time 16 GB not enough for you you will have swap memory in this case go straight to 24GB or 32GB but if you are ok to work in lightroom after finish close and then open photoshop and continue to work than you do not need 24 or 32GB

@@brandonkennedy the won't needed because they never run there system with more memory so they don't know what they are missing. MS Win was a dinosaur over a decade ago with it crashing OS and slow fat OS when apps are installed. Can if you ever max a machine memory you fund many issue get resolved by just adding memory. In the world of mac minis 2006-2018 upgrades and looking to the future is always important and if the upgrade option was removed it always best to max it out (less the HD). Been running external drives for over a decade and really there has been no need to worry that the internal drive is too small.(user as a boot camp and recover OS drive). On older mac and most likely up to 2018 remember that the Motherboard was also hard coded with limits, so even if you DIY and upgrade, unless you redo the motherboard and flash the firmware and EFI you do run into limits. (added obsolete into design by Apple).

@@hewpow Web browsing does require any kinda of base or modern system and cpu. Now granted the leaders in Browser and Browser security are making their browser only run on certain OS version and thus only certain system can run the OS required(but not always true as open source you can define the agent and OS to over come the checks). But site like this KZfaq are "FAT" and as such eat up CPU and memory. Which really only applies if you have a lot of tabs or windows of the browser open. So yes a self debate was to go with 32GB or 64GB and would one gain anteing. Needless to say we picked 64GB and never looked back. The game changer for current version of OS X after mojave(most stable since snow leopard) is having and SSD(int or ext to run OS) and memory. When the choice came to Mini Studio or Mac Pro, the defining factor on budget was eGPU. This bring a whole new level of performance to the OS and apps with the Mini. Even running an older 16GB GPU(fully supported by Apple and OS X version, well for now). Running 4k now has come of age. But, HD is still the standard/

I love Linux, but disagree unless by “pros” you just mean people who tend to know more about computing, operating systems, privacy and full control. However, if you mean “pro” to be people who do heavy photo and video creation, I’d disagree. Linux systems have horrible battery life and apps for photo and video creation have been painful to wait for them to improve. Yes, Darktable is great, but the interface is not very intuitive and has a pretty good learning curve. For video, I don’t know any pros who rely on Linux for their video editing requirements. I’m sure there are many, but the majority are using mainstream tools build for Windows or Mac, but usually not to include Linux availability. I find Linux to be the very best OS, but not for content creation. I also love its privacy, its scarcity among the masses, and its polish across many distros. But I hate its horrible battery management on laptops. If I lived on a desktop, I’d probably lean more toward Linux, but on laptops I have yet to find one that can get long battery life without weighing 5 pounds.
