I'm doing a year long replacement only no buy for 2019. With 5 "treat" items throughout the year. (as a buffer). After finding and religiously watching your channel, I realized that after I got clean (from heroin) I had so much "extra" money and started binging on makeup instead. I essentially traded one addiction for another. I want to be healthy all the way. Your videos helped a lot of people by putting into words what a lot of people are feeling.

Angela Pennington Not the same thing at all but I lost 100 pounds in 2013. By 2014 I realized I was trading eating for buying makeup. I gained it all back but now have two ( 3 or 4) problems. You’re amazing for beating that girl. A-freaking- mazing! I don’t know you but I’m happy for you and proud of you.

I quit smoking cold turkey going on 9 years ago and it was so hard, but so easy at the same time. I didn’t have to “cut back” or anything, I had one simple rule to follow: not even one. I convinced myself that someday, after I’d quit, it would be okay to become a social smoker and have one every now and then but guess what? Those things are effing disgusting and I will never put another one near my mouth. I smoked for 9 years, most of those years...heavily....and I quit cold turkey and never turned back. I think cold turkey can work for everyone because those who say it can’t, probably haven’t even tried it. Congrats on your no buy year!!

Hi Smacy, nice to see you here. I have become a heavy smoker in the past year when I used to be that person who would avoid being around smokers at all costs bc my parents would smoke all the time. I would have a cigarette occasionally in social situations but it was never a habit. I don't blame my ex bf but I did start smoking regularly and enjoying it more and more while with him. I am currently staying with my dad who still smokes and I now smoke more than him. His new wife is a doctor and does not like us smoking one bit. I hope someday soon both my dad and I can quit. Cold turkey seems to be the best way to stop this particular harmful habit.
@Smacy

Mariel Hinojosa yes, cold turkey is the way to go! When I quit smoking, I still lived with my college roommates, ALL of whom were heavy smokers! But, every time they went to smoke, I went with them. I brought a cup of coffee or tea, ya know, something to keep my hands busy, and I kept up the social habit without the cigs. It was SO hard at first but I decided I didn’t want to give up the social aspect, so I didn’t! I didn’t want to change my entire routine, I just eliminated smoking from it, and never looked back. It took a few weeks for the cravings to go away, and it took about TWO YEARS for the intermittent cravings to stop. But now I can’t freaking stand them and I can’t believe I ever smoked at all. I wish you all the best! And when you’re ready, cold turkey is, in my opinion, the only way to quit smoking for good (shy of Rx medication ofc).

I'm not starting a no buy year but I recognize certain patterns I need to address. I've been a stay at home mom for a year. That in itself made me realize a lot about myself. When I worked outside of the home I spent a lot on unnecessary things. With one income I don't feel comfortable spending money on random things. But I do a lot of " window shopping", reading reviews, looking at beauty videos, and making wishlists. I was obsessed with getting into to luxury make up. I wanted fancy packaging and that feeling of being luxurious and rich. When I found your channel it was perfect timing. I was distracting myself from real issues trying to make myself feel better with products. I've been binge watching your videos and enjoying the make up I have. Many things that I thought I wanted I'm not interested in anymore.

yes! I never realised that so much of my headspace was taken up by my 'window shopping' behaviour - binge watching/reading review, compiling wishlists etc. Whether I eventually bought the product or not, a lot of time was still spent thinking about spending money instead of going to do something that's actually productive.

One (reliable) income here! I'm considering a no buy, and a definitely a change to my shopping behaviors that I do to self-soothe. I went from being a compulsive antishopper to an overspender over the course of 5 years or so...I want a healthy balance (both in my mind and bank account!). Thanks to Hannah and this community, I have a shot at actually being successful 💜.

Danielle, I was in the same place a month ago (now I have a job but the rest is staying) so I totally feel you! I think I could do a budgeting instead of no buy - I buy relatevely reasonable amount of things. But my problem is buying unnecessary things because of a low price... I've been tracking this year what I bought and most of these items I don't even have anymore. But I have and like using those which I bought after longer consideration. I cross my fingers if everyone of us could fulfill her own idea of breaking of the bad habits 👍

I told myself for years that I was that person who just couldn't stick to rules and would immediately rebel and blah blah blah and it turns out, I had ADHD, which means my brain is garbage at impulse control and lacks the chemicals for it. Shopping is common problem for people with ADHD because our brains lack dopamine and the anticipation and acquisition of new things gives us the dopamine hit our brains need to function. After being diagnosed earlier this year, there was a period where I thought my prospects for getting shopping under control were hopeless because, well, my brain was WIRED to give in more easily to impulse, right? Wrong. Shoutout my therapist and doctor who cleared up a whole bunch of misconceptions for me. ADHD means I have shitty impulse control and that things like goal setting are harder for me than for the average person only if I persist in using an average person's strategies (most of which rely on having reserves of willpower to accomplish things that my brain can barely muster even with meds). So how does this roundabout confession link to your vid? Because a no-buy is an exceptional (as in, non-average) strategy. I've realized that when I don't cold turkey, when I give myself the option for engaging in a behavior (like shopping), I've ended up putting myself in a place where I'm frequently asked to test my impulse control and willpower. And since that's in shorter supply for me than a neurotypical person, I'm setting myself up to fail. Because I just don't have the reserves of willpower to be constantly asking myself if I should or can buy a thing or not. So cold turkey (the radical option) with rigid rules is what WORKS, because it means my brain doesn't constantly have to try and make decisions. It doesn't leave room for impulse or, worse, trying to rationalize buying something (which takes up so much mental energy that I should use for my life's work!). The rules I've made for my no-buy are clear and simple and non-negotiable, and the cold turkey nature of it is what pulls me out of situations where I could even give into impulse. Doing it for a year makes it a period long enough that my brain stops associating shopping with a dopamine rush, allowing me to break that habit. I truly never though cold turkey could ever work because I went into it the wrong way with the wrong mindset, but I'm almost a month into the no-buy I started after seeing your No Buy November vid and it's difficult, but working. I've been tinkering with the rules a bit and workshopping them so that they're fully set by Jan 1st, but honestly you've been such an inspiration! 2k19 is going to be the year of expending my mental energy on academics and law school applications and the LSAT, not shopping for pretty things to feel a high. Thank you, as always, for giving me the pep talk and inspiration and insight that keeps me motivated to change and keep going! And apologies for leaving a second incredibly long comment on your channel - I'm apparently incapable of stopping myself from writing entire novels under your vids! Hope you're having a relatively stress free and happy holiday season! 💛💛

@@unofficialxii8424 yeah you definitely should look more into it because the amount of misconceptions about ADHD out there are ridiculous, and there's a lot of debate about changing the name because it's a misnomer. ADHD doesn't mean you always have a short attention span or deficiency of attention because people with ADHD can hyperfocus on a thing for hours (in fact, my psych said that if you can never pay attention to anything ever, you likely don't have ADHD and are going through something else). Yes, ADHD is an inability to regulate attention (control when and how you want to focus) caused by insufficient and inconsistent amounts of dopamine reaching the outermost parts of your brain. But that lack of dopamine causes problems way beyond attention and affects things like time (like most ADHDers are time-blind aka can't properly perceive the passage of time), organization, goal setting, emotionality (like being super sensitive, acting on emotions without thinking at all, not being able to recognize what emotion you're feeling before already having acted on it), poor impulse control, issues with procrastination and motivation and even some memory problems. Delays in being diagnosed and treated also often wreck people's self esteem to the point of depression because they're constantly underperforming, and the pathological procrastination can cause intense amounts of anxiety. It messes with your life in a BUNCH of different ways, so if you have it, I would definitely spend some time looking into it and talking over it with a psych or doctor if possible!

It seems like the "baby steps" method works better for making habits. You can do a little exercise, incorporate a little more healthy food. I think "cold turkey" is the really effective way to quit something. When you can't smoke, for example, you become a non-smoker. I think that incorporation of lifestyle into identity is helpful in breaking a habit.

“Cold turkey” didn’t work for me until I acknowledged it was an actual addiction and mental health issue. Would you give an alcoholic just one beer? nOpe. I can’t give myself the wiggle room because I don’t stick to it. It’s so much easier to say I can’t get anything versus I can have just one thing. When I tried “low buys” I would obsess over which things got to be the winners and choosing would stress me out until I would say who cares and just buy it all. I had to figure out why my emotions were triggering me to shop in the first place.

excellent commentary about buying as a band aid. for me my former excessive spending was a band aid for my depression, low self esteem and creative slump (which lead to a lot of makeup AND art supplies being bought), and new makeup always came with the 'promise' of renewed creativity and the thing that will finally make me feel better about myself and my skills as both a makeup lover and as a painter/artist. eventually i went to therapy and realised that i can enjoy those things but shouldn't use them as a crutch, and that they will never bring the desired change. your channel, as well as therapy, was a turning point for me because i finally saw someone that struggled with shopping like i did and persevered and prevailed. for 2018, i am thankful for finding you, your channel, and becoming friends!

I did a no-buy for a year as well, and I think... I think my desires for things drastically changed immediately because whatever time I spent shopping and stuff, was quickly filled by other parts of my life. But I will say, that I never realized how much of life I was missing out on before my no-buy. So many family gatherings, helping my neighbors out with stuff, hanging out with friends, babysitting said friends’ kids, and all these other things I didn’t realize was going on... because whenever someone inquired me about these things, I was shopping and when I told them that, they assumed I didn’t want to be bothered. So while I learned that yeah, my brain just isn’t drawn to shopping or things if I’m not in that environment, it took a while for me to realize just how stupidly I was spending my time on this Earth! I had so many wonderful things that you can’t pick up at the stores, but I didn’t appreciate them until this no-buy. Would I recommend a no-buy? Absolutely. Not even just on a consumerism / spending problem perspective, but just... see what your life would be like if you weren’t shopping as much. I think you’ll be surprised at how much happier you are with the things you already have. ❤️

I thought I was the only person like this: the vicious circle of panicking about money and then spending compulsively on exactly the same kinds of things. I also have a similar working situation and interests (writing, working freelance and art). I have tried no-buy in the past, but it didn't work. I still bought things. Now I just don't want any more stuff. I want to enjoy what I have. I have too much around me and I have money issues. It's not even about baby steps v. turkey: I am fed up with the whole rigmarole and you have framed that for me perfectly. I am busy with lots of other things and the energy and resources should be going into them.

The avoidance of looking at your financial situation, the desire to want things and the subsequent buying of things not needed, the fantasy of being someone important that you describe all rings true. Before I even saw your video I had already put into place a mindset of stopping the uncontrolled shopping. Seeing your video has reinforced my resolve. I first read of no-buys in the book “Not Buying It” by Judith Levine. (Wow, I just looked it up. That was in 2006!). Over the years I’ve tried on many occasions to set shopping rules and restrictions for myself; but I could not (or would not) stick to them. I have to say, watching your channel this year has convinced me that it *is* possible to set rules and stick with them. The thing that is different for me this time is that I’ve taken the time to examine my own habits and I’m targeting specifically the behaviors that I want to change. I agree, I think 2019 is the year of the no-buy in the beauty community, and I’m excited about it

My biggest downfall is online shopping mainly for makeup so I’m going to go on a no buy via the Internet. I tend to go to Marshalls once a month and To me that’s okay, since my issue is the inter webs. I have to unfollow all brands and stuff on my social media.

@Olivia Carlo unsubbing from emails and social media accounts really helps. I stated above that I am a fairly controlled and frugal shopper, but beautiful social media feeds announcing discounts were so tempting to me. The word “should” doesn’t rub me the same way as it does you, but I’ve definitely had some ridiculous experiences with men stubbornly telling me what I should do. I knit and crochet on my public transit commute and men love to tell me I should turn it into a business and that they would totally pay for what I make. When I explain that to cover materials and to pay myself minimum wage, a pair of socks would cost well over one hundred dollars, they quickly switch from “I’d pay that” to “someone would pay that.” Turns out, they had no idea what they were talking about 😒😒😒

Hannah, I just found you this evening and I'm feeling really grateful that KZfaq's algorithm recommended you to me. I appreciate how honest and self-aware you are when sharing the things you have observed about yourself through the course of this no-buy year. Your insights have sparked some intense self-reflection in me and as I give thought to the kind of year I'd like to have in 2019, I'm keeping your comments in mind. I'll be watching more of your vids this weekend - I'm just really surprised and grateful to find some real thought-provoking personal development/betterment content that isn't focused on things like ridiculous tea detoxes or waking up at 3:30am to hit the gym. It's the inner life that drives change, and I'm so happy to find a channel that actually addresses that.

It's amazing how once I decided to go on a no-buy year I started finding so much content about this on youtube ... Yours are the best videos so far, for me: from the way you look, to how articulate you explain your journey and your motivations, i just love watching you and will keep doing so. Each one of us is different of course, but I've been finding quite a lot of inspiration for myself while already in the mindset of doing (more or less) the same thing ...

I wanna try a no-buy year in 2019. Buy only things I need to replace. Avoid social media. I’ve been off Instagram and Facebook for 4 months now. So I think being off social media had help me control my urge to spend. I maybe purchased 3-5 new makeup items in the matter of 6 months. I’ve been into decluttering too to curate my collection (makeup, clothing, shoes, accessories and perfumes).

"I was always looking for something to want" Oh my god that is exactly what I'm going through and its exhausting. I always feel this sense of 'what next?' 'what can I buy to make me feel like I'm accomplishing something?' and a feeling of anxiety in my stomach if I'm at home and not at the shops... And I always justify that whatever I am buying is just adding to my "productive" life, because I buy what I considered "practical" things like skincare for self-confidence, clothes for work, books for self-development etc... but I know that at the end of the day I'm just wasting my time, money and effort and always preparing for something that's never coming because it's an endless road....

I'm starting a no spend year because of a toxic fantasy self. I buy clothes as a costume screaming to the world " I'm edgy, I'm interesting, be my friend !", I buy books that I'll never read but say to my guests that I'm artistic and intelligent. Buying stuff is not about money and needs, it's about emotions and hopes. I'm one month in, and I have to face my problems, it's hard but so rewarding ! Keep going 💪

I feel like one way that my brain gets lured into wanting more stuff is when I watch videos talking about product lists e.g. monthly favourites, hauls and best of videos - I know that alot of these videos are supposed to help me make a more informed choice as a consumer, but more often than not they actually introduce me to more products that I wouldn't even know about before watching the video, let alone want. It's a part of my shopping behaviour and I've been trying to cut down on it - i.e. only spending time to watch a review of a product that I was already thinking of getting, instead of enticing myself to get more stuff that I don't need. It's saving me so much time and I never realised how much time I actually spent researching and obsessing over products that I didn't even want in the first place!

While there are independent youtubers who strive to bring us unbiased content, it's all just advertising. Even Hannah's "Monthly Empties" videos have influenced me this way - for FOMO I decided I "had" to have a product she said she loved and was sad she couldn't buy again until 2019 (my 2nd irrational justification was that it was on sale). A negative repercussion of her no-buy is that I decided to spend my money in her stead. Hannah's "youtube made me buy it."

@@bebelovely7451 yup i think the beauty community started off as a way to share good/bad products but with youtubers accepting sponsorships, reviews are no longer so transparent :/ I've basically cut myself off from watching any videos that recommend products (or focus on product lists such as best ofs and empties) unless I have something that needs to be replaced and I find that it helps! Project pan videos are good sources of motivation too

Excellent content Hannah! I love how you mentioned that your feelings of anxiety during the 2016 elections drove you to developing a shopping addiction in an effort to alleviate what you were going through. I can relate to those feelings. I too had misplaced my need to release my depression/stress with reckless shopping behavior rather than healthy forms- therapy, exercise, coaching, etc. I had left a job in the teaching field and after a decade into it to suddenly not knowing what I would do next was scary. I didn't have direction or a safety net in the financial department. I was irresponsible and accrued a lot of debt...not just with shopping for makeup, but charging my card for an escape like vacations, lavish meals, buying expensive gifts I couldn't afford, etc. 2017 was a wake up call and I had to change because I was causing my own set-backs in all areas of my life. I remember when I couldn't even afford gas in my car to drive over and support a friend's grand opening of her new organization. That hurt. It was the kind of pain I know well enough to protect myself from having to ever feel it again. I guess everyone's level of "no-buy" will be based on how motivated they are.

Im starting my no buy in 2021. The fantasy of owning a makeup/skincare/jewelry item was more strong than actually using it. Like foundations, when a new one comes out the fantasy of this formula being the best or the colour match being the best is what makes me buy it. So many disappointments didn't stop my from buying more. My collection is currently very curated through smarter purchases but now I need to start finishing some makeup items. In 2019 I finished 143-148 products and none of it was makeup which is saying a lot.

I was just thinking about the same book - Better than Before. We are all different and no buys won't necessarily work for everyone. I think I need a no buy for 2019... my stuff is getting out of control. It's not just make up, it's skin care (face and body), perfume, clothes, jewellery, footwear... you name it, I buy it! I just need to work out my rules - if they feel unreasonable I will look for every loophole going or just quit. Like I have bought a ton of new clothes since I lost weight. I don't need any more - unless I lose enough weight my new wardrobe no longer fits. So it can't be a 100% no buy of clothes for any reason, but no more buying another new dress for dancing when I have plenty in the wardrobe that fit, and so forth.

I think you would find it really interesting. She wrote a couple of books about happiness and then Better than Before emerged from a conversation with a friend who commented that it was odd how habits were sometimes east to form and other times nearly impossible even when it was the same habit. She came to the conclusion that a lot of happiness is about being able to form healthy habits and so a book on how to do that was worthwhile. The key is there is no "one size" that fits all, but that it's down to self awareness and understanding the person you are and what will work for you. I have been to a couple of talks with her when she has been to the UK, she is a really interesting talker and her books are the few I return to for ideas again and again. I shall be revisiting my copy over the holidays as I make some plans for 2019.

@@estellehowell4414 Said it perfectly, that's exactly what the book is about. She also has a lot of the basics of the information on her website, if you wanted to give it a read over before diving into the full book. I had never thought about my personality like that before, but it's true - I'm an 'abstainer' who has to do the all or nothing approach and also the 'obliger' who needs external motivation to get things done, like having someone else depending on me or checking in on me. It's probably why I blog about my goals publicly, so people can call me out when I'm not working towards them!

This talk is making me think of Gretchen Rubin and her writing and podcast about habits and personality types. If you haven't read her books or listened to her podcast Happier I recommend them. She discusses different personality types, and how if you know your type, you can use that information to figure out strategies for forming better habits. She says that one difference is that some people are Abstainers and others are Moderators - in this case, Abstainers would be able to do a no buy, but Moderators might be better working with a budget. This is a great topic and I'm thinking of a no buy for 2019.

this was exactly what i needed to hear. i’m so glad that i’ve found your channel, i’m a college student & the stress has been really taking a toll on my the past couple years, & it’s manifested as a minor shopping addiction. i totally related to the parts about spending all of my time shopping and browsing & the need for cold turkey. anything i’ve quit & stuck with has been through just quitting. the biggest ones have been smoking (i smoked for 3 years daily) & going vegetarian. it’s always worked best for me to just force myself to stop, but also not beating myself up when i slip up sometimes. like if i have a cigarette when i’m out, i don’t shame myself. i accept that it happened, think of WHY i slipped up, & then resume not doing it. i feel like that attitude has been super helpful for me breaking habits because i think a lot of addictions are shame based.

I'll replace essentials like deodorant, but I'll use up all my other items. I've got enough make-up, shower products, creams, clothing and jewellery that I don't need to buy more of anything. I realise my spending is ridiculous and I buy for no good reason. I want to make a change, it's time.

You just read my mind Hannah. I don't have a lot of makeup as per most people's standard. But being a new stay at home mom having even 2 pallets is a lot since I don't go out much. I hav one foundation concealer and a face powder and recently bought few palettes . Hav 4 palettes and 1 blush and a bronzer and a mascara. But I don't use them much. So thats a lot for me.(most of them r high end like Marc Jacobs) So I am going on a No buy 2019 because my low buy will still b a lot for me. Not sure how I will change after no buy. U never know. I hav enough money and money is not an issue. For me spending on something I know I hav no use is the issue. I also spend a lot of time searching and doing window shopping online even though I don't buy them. I spend my free time on browsing. So no buy will cut down my time online too!! I can spend that with my baby.. I hav issue being on KZfaq for a long time. I am also spending less time online in 2019. I am doing this because my anxiety becomes more when on KZfaq watching makeup hauls and it's adding fuel to my fire. I spend money only on 2 things in my life. Books and makeup. I am going to do No buy for books and makeup. Will finish the books before buying new ones. Sorry for the long comment. I just feel so relieved and happy for my way forward.

It’s nice to see someone that is in the beauty community that I really enjoy watching that doesn’t also reinforce my voracious appetite for new beautiful things. I have decided that I’m on a no buy through the end of this year. I want to have more meaningful experiences and I can’t do that if I am constantly acquiring new things. Watching these videos help me renew my commitment and thinking about different ways to go about being in the world. I need to create room for growth and that takes time. Thank you Hannah!

Hello Hannah!! I just found this video. I'm crying watching this video. It is so me. You are describing me to a tee. I never thought of some of the things you mentioned, but they make so much sense. The tough love pep talk you give at the 20 minute mark really hit home. It hit home not only for shopping and buying/spending, but for food and eating as well. I know so many times I'll say I'm only gonna have one coke a day. I know I could and would go cold turkey with coke if I would just do it. Thank you so much for making this video. I think I am the reason for you making this video.

I have 3 coming in the mail right now and about 5 or so I have recently bought. So I was thinking go no buy and put those new ones away and instead of tearing into them and stacking them up in my drawers and proceeding to get on KZfaq foolishly convincing myself that I wont buy...I will refocus myself use what I have bought And then when I really want to open a new one durring this coming up year instead of shopping I will open one up...keeping them all in their packaging as is...ahhh!

Hi Hannah, congrats on your No buy year! :) so much of what you said in this video spoke to me... Money and spending it is so complex and so bring about shame and guilt. I am doing my own No Buy year in 2019 and so excited for it. Thank you for being open and vulnerable. Sending you warm wishes!

You are incredible! I feel like you are taking about myself in so many ways. You're putting into words things that seem so true and I didn't even realize about myself. Especially the one about skewed ideas of value. I remember a time when a Natasha Denona palette seemed bizarrely ridiculous and well beyond anything I would pay for, and now I buy almost every ND palette that comes out. I've spent thousands and thousands of dollars on makeup I could have invested and honestly at the time I didn't even blink at it or question my choices! I'm ashamed and disappointed in myself. But, I'll be starting a no buy year January 1st and I'm going to mostly follow your rules except for a small allowance during vacation. You've inspired me!

This may sound crazy but did you ever have the thought, if I were to die tomorrow what purpose would a no buy serve? That thought of “balancing” the now with he later is what always seems to do me in and ruin my will power. Can you relate to this thought?
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 5 жыл бұрын
I can see where you are coming from, but if I lived asking "if I were to die tomorrow what purpose would x serve" I would never invest in my future. I wouldn't eat healthy food, make big plans, organize projects, work on my relationship, etc. Life is unpredictable so in some ways the hard work of self-improvement is a gamble. But if I end up living a long life, I don't want to be broke and sick and drowning in stuff. So it's worth it to me.

craftywoman ok but if you die tomorrow what would it matter that you bought something the day before that might have caused her so much stress or fear because of finances so then she would spend her last day feeling those feelings of guilt

This video has really reinforced my want to do a no buy year in 2019! I feel like I’m going to listen to this a lot of times to get me through it - literally everything you described at the start is SO EXACT to my experience it’s crazy! My plan is to do a no buy for the whole year (aside from replacing my eyeliner and brow products), and to declutter everything I didn’t use at the end of next year! It’s going to be tough, but it’s something I need to do as I’ve spent most of my savings for my first house on makeup this year 😓 you’ve really helped me to be certain about my decision! Thank you 💕

This is the first video I've watched from you. I find it interesting that you keep referring to "the election". As an older, mature woman, I fail to see how something outside yourself, like a presidential election, could possibly compel you to behave in a certain way. I speak from a long history of substance abuse, with now 14 years of clean and sober living. Perhaps it's our age difference or a difference in our values, but external circumstances are an unfortunate part of life. I appreciate that you recognize your behavior, however, to marry that behavior to the result of an election shows a profound lack of personal accountability. I appreciate the changes you are making as this does show accountability and maturity. I appreciate you sharing your experience. I'm just completely dumbfounded that by your own admission, a presidential election was the impetus to your actions in spending. I mean no insult to you, these are simply my observations. The fact that you and I can be on different sides of the same coin further illustrates that we are fortunate to live in a society that allows us to each have an opinion.

I don't consider elections to be "outside myself." The question of who Americans are choosing to vote for is something that matters to me, inside myself.

Lol the election thing was odd for me too- I’m not a trump fan but I don’t see how it makes any sense blaming his win on impulse buying. Politics and buying makeup don’t seem to go hand in hand in my mind but maybe that’s just me 😂

perhaps I wasn't clear about it in this video, I've been clearer in other videos and I try not to repeat myself too much. The election precipitated a long period of depression, and it was the depression that made room for my overspending tendencies to grow out of control. From what I've read, it is a common pattern.

I'm not even American and I was deeply depressed and stressed by the 2016 election, I had a lot of stress and anxiety related to it. It didn't necessarily cause me to spend out of control but it was an awful time.

I'm so sorry that I was one of those people recommanding you to try something by saying that you ''should'' try it! English isn't my first language but I do understand now the slight distinction! I wasn't seeing it this way, but it makes perfect sense. On another note, I will start my own no-buy year! I've been binge watching your videos since I found your channel and you're exactly what I needed to begin my recovery from a slight makeup shopping addiction. I thought the only way to feel a spark of joy and excitement was to buy new products, but I felt very similar and even stronger feelings by watching you talk about the products you already own and the satisfaction of using them up and rediscovering them. It motivated me to do the same! Thank you, Hannah xx
