I wouldn't pull a tooth without anesthesia so why should I push out a baby without drugs? But at the end of day, it is the decision of the person who is giving birth, nobody else!

Had a co-worker ask my husband if he was going to let me have an epidural or not. He was an absolute champ and told them he was going to let me have whatever I thought I needed. He said "I'm not the one in pain so I can't really decide what she needs. Her job is to figure that out, and my job is to make sure it happens." Love my guy so much!

Love this! The woman who taught our birthing class talked about coping vs. suffering a lot and after 30 hours of labor I very clearly recognized that I had crossed over into suffering. I realized that if I pushed through for the “natural” experience I would have no joy in meeting my son and be too exhausted to be present. After the epidural, I slept completely blacked out for three hours and my body progressed rapidly. I went from 4-6 while I slept then was at a 10 about 1.5 hours later.

I used hypnobirthing after my induction and did fine even on pitocin until I reached transition. Once I started vomiting during each contraction I was done, it was time to stop suffering and get the epidural. At least I know I could do it next time without that God awful pitocin lol.

It made be very uncomfortable worse than feeling the contractions to the point that it made me cry. For my next baby I’m praying for a fast delivery so I won’t need it. Everyone keeps telling me "omg you're gonna want an epidural" "you just don't know how painful it is" etc. .... I really don't want an epidural unless I absolutely need one. They're talking about inducing me so depending on how that goes I might need the epidural, who knows. But honestly I hate that people don't just let you make your choice. Either way, I figure everyone should do what works for them. Great vid! ❤

I had an induction. It took around 3 hours for the pills that they pushed up my vagina to start working but the labour itself only took 7 hours, but it was extremely painful. My face and fingers went numb and I thought I was going to die XD. I asked for pain meds, but they said it's too late. Breathing exercises didn't work and neither did walking around, it was too sore. But the moment I felt the urge to push, the pain went away. I pushed about 3 times and the baby popped out, not even the tear was really painful. My second baby I am so terrified of re-experiencing the pain again. So I'm watching youtube videos to try and put my mind at ease. This time though I am not doing an induction. So maybe it will be better.

I've been induced three times and gotten the epidural twice. It didn't work for me. So, with my last one, I went into it knowing that I wasn't going to get it. What really helped me was just staying calm and letting the contractions do their thing. Yes, it hurts but you can do it and if you decide that you do want the epidural after all, get it and have no shame. Do what you need to to get your baby out safely.

I wasn’t 100% against an epidural. I wanted to try to go without but if I needed it, I would get it. My daughter was stuck behind my cervix and my OB was reaching up(sorry, TMI) trying to turn her. It was so painful. I wasn’t just in pain, I was suffering. I decided to go for the epidural but I told them I only wanted a little bit and I would add more if needed. It was awesome. I could still feel everything except for the pain! I could feel pressure of my OB, and the nurses/my husbands hands on my legs, the contractions coming on and even the need to push. When I started to feel pain again, I asked for a tiny bit more and they gave me a tiny bit more. If you don’t want to go completely numb because you don’t want it to ruin your birth experience(which is what I was nervous about), insist on less!!!! They gave me half of what they usually give people. I am smaller so half might not work at all for you but just be sure that they know what YOU want. Don’t let them use their status as a doctor to talk you down. Also, the epidural calmed me down a LOT which also made the birthing easier. DO NOT LET PEOPLE DISCOURAGE YOU FROM DOING WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR BABY! I had a horrible experience with my last birth and this one was so much better because I spoke up for myself! Also, watch Sarah’s breathing video!!! That helped a ton!

My contractions weren't really painful as much as they were intense pressure... I think a lot of the "pain" that comes from contractions is our mind not resting through contractions to fully allow our bodies to work that baby out. All the research that I've done told me that the more we rest and be calm through contractions the easier and quicker your labor can go. I can definitely attest to that truth! First baby, all natural, no epidural, only labored 6 hours and pushed for 15 minutes! At one point I thought I needed an epidural mostly because I was exhausted; not from the pain of the contractions. I'm thankful for epidurals in circumstances where women really really need them though. Also, PENNY SIMKIN IS THE BOMB! I loved reading The Birth Partner. It helped me more than my husband! Haha

Umm maybe maybe not. I had my third last year and the contractions where not painful but where pressure. However she was my first baby to come out the "right" direction. My older childern where both Sunny side up babies and I had awful back labor they were painful contractions and the babies where not engaging properly due to there position. The contractions we're literally 60-90 seconds apart (from start to start) and 45 seconds long for hours. There was no rest period other then a single breath. After 20 hours with the first and only being at 6 cm we got an epi saved me because had another 16 hours to go and I need to be able to rest.

If you're planning to deliver unmedicated, I'd highly recommend reading a lot about labor and watching positive birth videos! It helped me mentally prepare for it. That being said, you really never know what to expect with a first labor. It is a real, grueling marathon! If you end up having pitocin administered, I'd recommend an epidural as the contractions are a lot more intense. I'm 33 weeks now with my second and will plan to labor naturally until it is uncomfortable and then get an epidural. I'd like to be able to rest until it's time to push. With my first birth, the transition contractions were incredibly intense and took a lot out of me, so pushing took a really long time. I wish I'd been able to rest!

Joana Ramas discrimination happens against women who have “natural” births too, believe it or not. I had a 100% unmedicated water birth, and the second I talk about my experience I’m automatically seen as “holier than thou” by so many people. I attend a local mom’s group in my town and I’m also part of a community for mothers online - I can’t mention my daughter’s birth without eyerolls and comments like “you know you don’t get a medal for going natural” ... I’m like I know lol I have never once asked for a medal, nor do I believe in any way, shape, or form that I’m better than women who have epidurals or get c-sections. It’s sad that I can’t talk about my birth experience, express my feelings about it, or show any evidence that I’m proud of it without other women getting offended and/or believing that I’m on some high horse. Shouldn’t we all be proud of bringing life into the world? I sure as heck am, and I would hope that everyone else is as well. My experience is my experience, your experience is your experience. There’s no reason for me to be offended by yours, and there’s no reason for you to offended by mine 🤷🏼‍♀️

Your description of pain/coping vs suffering was very apropos. I went through a relatively speedy unmedicated 1st labour and delivery a couple of months ago. Happily I felt the pain was endurable up until we went to the hospital, at which point I was fully dilated anyway. But had that not been the case I was ready to have an epidural. So I would really encourage all expectant mothers to stay flexible and just see how things progress and how well they are coping.

I really wanted an epidural but I didn’t have time. My contractions were very painful but were not close together. They were about 7-10 minutes apart. The closest one was 6 minutes apart as my husband called the hospital letting them know we were coming in and lied about the contractions being 5 mins apart for an hour. I’m glad we lied and went to the hospital because I was 10 cms when they checked me in the ER. It was crazy. The last contraction I timed was 6 minutes apart and my daughter was born 45 minutes later. So glad I didn’t follow the 5-1-1 rule or I would’ve had her in my bathroom.

Oh, maybe that's why it went faster. You really scared me though because here where I live (Poland) they actually send you back home very often if they decide you're not dilated enough (3-4cm according to them) and I might not make it back in time if the labor progresses....,especially in the rush hours... :) Well... :)

The explanation about pain vs suffering just lifted the clouds for me!! Thank you! I was sure I was going to get an epidural, then not sure as I've been doing so much prep work and feeling better about it, now I know - I'll make the decision when I get there! If all I feel is pain and I can manage it with breathing, mental clarity, and positioning then great, if I feel an emotional heavy and soul hurting emotion - which I can easily recognize then epidural it is!! Thank you!!

My first birth was completely natural. I planned a natural birth and since we were at home, we didn't have the option for an epidural. It was a very long and PAINFUL process and if I were in a hospital, I would have been begging for an epidural. Second birth was also natural (silly me) but ended up needing to go to the hospital for an emergency situation and getting an epidural (and eventually a c-section). The difference between natural birth and having an epidural is EPIC. I'm pregnant with my third and I'm planning on getting an epidural!!

Came to this video looking to learn more about epidurals, I’m 33 weeks pregnant and have had the mindset that I kind of want to experience an unmedicated childbirth, but also thinking that maybe getting an epidural might be a good option too. Most women I know that have had kids had epidurals, and they kind of look at me funny when I say I don’t really plan on getting one. After watching this video I feel inspired again to opt out of it :) I love how you distinguish pain and suffering, that just makes so much sense. And I like how you approached this positively. Originally I didn’t want an epidural because I thought the potential side effects of it may outweigh the benefits for me personally, but after watching this video, the idea of the epidural was “undemonized” in my mind lol. Thank you so much for the informative video!

I just had my baby a week ago, she is my second and i was far more confident in knowing how and when to ask for pain relief. My plan A was if i went natural, i would not get an epidural because i wanted that natural, primal experience. My plan B was that if i did need to be induced, i wanted an epidural with the Pitocin. We had to go with plan B, and i was so happy with that decision. The epidural did fail after a while, soooo i ended up with Pitocin and no pain relief, so i got both experiences, and i am thrilled with how it went.

This video definitely helped me through my labor without an epidural. I kept asking myself if I was truly suffering or just experiencing pain, and before I knew it, that question made me get to 10 cm! When I was in transition, I had so much pressure and pain that I asked for an IV med that put me right to sleep. I woke up and dealt with every contraction, but fell right to sleep once it was over. I woke up at one point said “I NEED TO PUSH” lol ,and sure enough, I was ready. I definitely would recommend that iv med to anyone just wanting to take the edge off, but not get the full epidural.

Emily De Naples does the IV med affect the baby at all?? I believe I read somewhere that the medicine could reach the baby but not do damage it’s just a con they had listed but I don’t want the epidural at all
@zzevonplant
@zzevonplant 5 жыл бұрын
@@evaherrera160 Yeah, it definitely can affect the baby, but it basically just makes them sorta sleepy, it's not a huge deal. Because the baby only gets a proportional baby-dose of it because of the way your body processes it, so it's not like the baby is getting a large amount of the medication. If they were, hospitals wouldn't give it to anyone, ever. And a lot of the time, the point at which the give you the IV pain meds is early enough that, by the time the baby is actually out, they're not really sleepy anymore anyway. If it worries you, talk to your doctor about it, but, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

For medical reasons, I couldn’t have an epidural- I would have tried without one anyway, but I really think that it not being an option made laboring that much easier. Knowing that I didn’t have any other option, I wasn’t constantly thinking about “is this the worst pain, do I need to go with an epidural” and I was able to take my labor one contraction at a time. And it was STILL the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life and I have all good positive feelings about it. I also had an amazing midwife and doula, which doesn’t hurt 😊

I'm from the US and I have 4 kids. 3 girls and 1 boy. My first 3 girls I got an epidural, the last , my baby boy I didn't get an epidural. The experience was really different with him. I never felt any pain at all with my first 3. And my boy I dialated 10cm with no pain at all. I felt nothing until he was there and ready to come out. But the pain was real. It hurt so bad But I loved giving birth. The connection is so real and so strong. And you , I felt so strong after giving birth. I learned to love myself and cherish my woman parts. I would recommend to not get the epidural. Experience the lovepain . Your giving birth to your own flesh. God created us to be amazing to create life and give birth.

I really like this video. I received an epidural and I think it helped my body to relax and progress. I was induced due to pre eclampsia and had contractions that wouldnt ease up. I felt like if I could have been able to move or take a bath that I could have lasted longer without one or handled the pain. However, i was hooked up to monitors and an iv which made it hard to move around. The best reason I heard someone say they liked birth without the epidural is because the recovery was better. Best reason ive heard for not getting one. I am all for women giving birth without one if that's what they want, but I dont think we should make women feel bad for getting one if it helps them feel better. You made a good point about mental health and that's the best reason ive heard for getting an epidural.

It started over an hour ago and has been always kinda every 6 min between 30-1min long I guess. My 4th child, I did not want an epidural. I had done natural birth before with the help of a doula. So I made sure to hire a doula this time around. I told the nurses that I did not want to be asked if I wanted pain meds. I would tell them if I wanted pain meds. I was induced, so the first shift nurse honored my wishes. 2nd shift nurse when I was in active labor, decided to ask me every hour if I wanted an epidural. I eventually said yes because she literally would come in right as I was experiencing a contraction and be like, you want an epidural right. You can get an epidural, for like 3-4 hours. I was pissed off after it was all said and done. Of course during the contraction I just wanted it to end, but my mom and doula said I was handling them very well. And I was in pain and but not suffering. Definitely wished I would’ve stuck with my plan. I was so mad at that nurse for not honoring my wishes.

Yes! I've been induced three times. Twice, I got an epidural and with the last I didn't. Now, I would never recommend an epidural because my personal experience is that they do not work! I just ended up scared, in pain and with no options because I was already stuck in bed. So, with my last, I went into it knowing that I wasn't going to get one because it's pointless for me. It was the absolute best birthing experience I've had and I can't wait to do it again in December. That said, while I don't recommend them, I still tell my newly expectant friends having it fail is not what happens to everyone. So, if you go in wanting one or decide in the moment that you do, go for it! I hope it works and you can tell me your beautiful story later. The goal is to have a healthy baby.
