Finally a well presented video on the pros and cons on bead locks.. thank you but one critique: although some of us don’t do a lot of off-roading we live in snowy states so airing down on that snow helps with traction
@JKGearandGadgets6 жыл бұрын
I always thought that you didn’t want to air down on snow? Thought a skinnier track was better so it cuts in
@series91936 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve read where people say the skinnier tire is best in snow and I guess in their experience they’re right but I live in boston ma. and I’ve aired down in the snow and I’ve had much better control of the jeep
@MrElbowgrease6 жыл бұрын
Coming from Wyoming you want tall and skinny on the pavement for daily driving. But when your stuck on a snowy trail, where snow has drifted on/over the road or otherwise really need some grip airing down can be a lifesaver. Been there.

New to the channel, and new to the Jeep world, just bought my first Jeep ever a little less than a month ago, got me a 2008 JKU and love it, just bought the Sunpie Headlights i saw you had and waiting for the weather to warm up a bit so I can install them, really like this channel, learning things about Jeeps and some cool minor upgrades to do to mine that will really help me out, lost my left leg in a car wreck March of 2017 so I;m going to be buying the steel grab bars for the front once i get the money to buy them so I can get in and out easier, again, love the channel you have gotten a new subscriber, keep up the awesome videos!

Remember, these only clamp on one bead, so you can lose a bead on the inside of the wheel if you air down too much and tire flexes too much.
@JKGearandGadgets6 жыл бұрын
That is true, however I’ve only seen one or two instances of that. Most of the time that happens with racing and high speed off-roading. Never had an issue with an inner bead at 6-8 PSI. But yes you are correct it’s still a possibility! Thanks for watching and thanks for the input!

This video answered my questions and yesterday I bought a set of beadlocks with 30" BF Goodrich KM3 tires, I am looking forward to desert riding thjis winter when we head to Arizona. And, THANK YOU for your hilarious responses to whomever the Mr Ben idiot is...... I am still laughing. Thank you for taking time to make this video so guys like me can be informed and make a decision.

Thanks for explaining bead locks! Now it makes a lot of sense to use bead locks or not! Depending on application! Mr Ben has more important issues to deal with than this I think 🤔 . Unless you have so much horsepower you spin the tire in the rim and that’s more likely to happen at the Drag strip!

The tire contact patch actually gets massively longer when wired down. Not much wider. Like literally only maybe an inch at the most. There are some sweet videos of people painting their treads and comparing the differences. I always assumed the width changed a ton too but it doesn’t. Contact patch get almost twice as long.

For stuff like soft sand it is actually both. For soft sand like material surface area is everything.

your comment is valid for radial tires. Bias ply is different
@consaka16 жыл бұрын
Would you care to expand on that and explain your belief why? Otherwise you haven't contributed to the conversation at all. There are a lot of differences between radial and bias ply tires but I fail to see the effect difference on soft sand. Given that surface area has a direct correlation to pounds per square inch hitting the sand keeping that vehicle from sinking in. Last I checked you can air down bias ply like you can radials. Radials do roll easier but still the principle is the same.

There is another con to airing down too much, cupping. Loss of ground pressure or contact patch in the center of the tread. Tire composition, vehicle weight, terrain are all factors on how much air pressure you need. My 4x4 weighs 5600lbs sans camping gear etc, runs 35/12.5's an an 8" wide non beadlock wheel. 15 psi is plenty low enough to let the tires conform to the terrain with no major loss of ground pressure applied to the center of the tread. The wider tire on a narrow wheel with 15 psi keeps the beads seated, and it also helps prevent cupping and tire damage by pulling the sidewalls in. With front/rear lockers it goes most anywhere I point it.

Those tires would have much better traction to go over that rock in the mudd because at the same time that you're going over the rock, you're pressing it down. So, when you're pressing the rock down, you're going over it. Lol. Those tires were made for the mudd, not on a street surface.

@consaka16 жыл бұрын
Please elaborate.
@JKGearandGadgets6 жыл бұрын
They are pricey, have to buy the internal beadlocks which vary, but are about 200-400$ each. Then you will still want to upgrade wheels (most people won’t use them on factory wheels) so that is another expense. Swapping tires is more difficult than external beadlocks. Plus depending on the wheel you still have possible damage to the lip of the wheel (beadlock rings or rock rings will prevent that). They are both good options but like everything in the offroad market there are trade offs for both. I’m not dogging internal beadlocks, I just didn’t really want to get into them in this video since I didn’t have any to show or demonstrate
@consaka16 жыл бұрын
Ill give you the price one. They are spendy, $220 each on my source. Swapping tires is not much more difficult than regular wheels and I don't see anyone swapping to beadlocks just to make putting on new tires easier. My point was that for the average person needing them the internal beadlocks are a better option. Probably the best reason they are better is that they lock both beads and not just the outside one. This makes them a lot better for messing around with low pressures on sand or snow. Also DOT approved and lighter weight for everyday driving. You forgot the reason most people will probably choose an extra set of rims. You have to drill an extra hole in the rim for the valve stem to stick through for airing it up. Both have their differences but id rather have both beads sealed. I suppose you could do both and get the extra rim protection. I do know that having a bead come off in a muddy ravine totally sucks. I have seen tires really mangled and come completely off before the recovery was complete.

Heavy, can leak, a lot of bolts to torque down and keep an eye on, DOT compliance?, right offset for vehicle, a lot of tire shops can screw up a wheel real quick balancing our dismounting, more weight on spare tire carriers, more stress on bearings, axles, ball joints, knuckles, suspension, steering. Do you want more? Look at his front end, you have assist on a pro rock 44. Plenty of 60's out there on 37's with no assist. That massive offset is fighting you on scrub radius.

ONLY FOOLS BUY BEAD LOCKER RIMS !!! ...........TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY!! ... Unless you are racing at high speeds around corners with very low tyre pressure in competitions that your daily Disco will never be able to do. I think bead locker rims are a useless gimmick that take way to long to change a tyre and will not stop the tyre bead from popping off the inner side of the rim. I have used them. Heavy, pointless and not worth the money. I use an inner tube in my rock crawler rims so I can have very low pressure. Works perfectly and have never had the tyre lose all it's air from when a tyre is pushed in from it's bead to far. It holds the air in the tube still and pushes itself back on the bead as the tyre turns. When off 4X4ing for fun, you are not going that fast (over 40mph into tight corners). You drive slow so you can run inner tubes in Tubeless Tyre's. Unless they are on super low profiles that is because it is very hard to fit them in. So why do you people waist good money on them? .. Is it because they look good? .. Just buy the rims that look like bead lockers instead.. Don't be sucked into this bead locker bullshit.
@JKGearandGadgets6 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with you. Beadlocks aren’t only for high speed. Rockcrawling at low speeds and low psi will still cause you to possibly loose a bead. Beadlocks aren’t for everyone but to say they are for fools is extremely far fetched.

JK Gear and Gadgets that's why is said to just USE AN INNER TUBE ! But i would expect a person who brought brought bead lockers to understand that? I know how they work without your video. Inner Tubes work better and are a lot faster to change and way cheaper ..

Mr Ben. Is one of those people so convinced of his own superiority that he feels it entitles him to be incredibly rude and obnoxious.
