The Panasonic 12mm f/1.4 and the 15mm f/1.7 are considered great lenses for Micro Four Thirds cameras for several reasons:
Wide Aperture: Both lenses have wide maximum apertures (f/1.4 for the 12mm and f/1.7 for the 15mm). A wide aperture allows for more light to reach the camera sensor, making these lenses excellent for low-light conditions. Additionally, a wide aperture allows for a shallower depth of field, which can be advantageous for creative purposes such as isolating subjects from the background.
Sharpness: These lenses are known for their optical quality and sharpness. The combination of a wide aperture and high sharpness makes them versatile for various photography applications, including landscape, street, and portrait photography.
Build Quality: Panasonic is known for producing lenses with good build quality. The construction of these lenses often includes metal components, which enhances durability. They are also designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry around.
Autofocus Performance: Both lenses generally have fast and accurate autofocus performance, which is crucial for capturing sharp images, especially in dynamic or fast-paced shooting situations.
Focal Lengths: The 12mm and 15mm focal lengths provide versatile options for different types of photography. The 12mm is slightly wider, making it suitable for landscapes and architectural photography, while the 15mm is a popular choice for street photography and general-purpose shooting.
Micro Four Thirds System Compatibility: These lenses are specifically designed for Micro Four Thirds cameras, providing a good balance between performance and size. Micro Four Thirds cameras are known for their compact and lightweight design, and these lenses complement that form factor.
Ultimately, the appeal of these lenses comes from their combination of wide apertures, sharp optics, good build quality, and suitability for various photographic styles. However, the "greatness" of a lens can also be subjective and dependent on individual preferences and specific use cases.

There's no way the pic at 1:43 was taken with 12mm given the compression of the foreground and the background boats.

If you need 12mm, you have the highly rated Olympus option, the 12mm f/2.

Great video! I have the 15mm f1.7, love it so much! I really want to try the 12mm f1.4 in the future, seems like a solid albeit bigger lens.

Great video chat. I've been using 40º FOV on my gx9. I'm looking at the 15mm for its 62º FOV and 17mm for its ~54º FOV. In the UK the 15mm is 50% more than the Olympus 17mm f1.7 so I'm leaning towards the Olympus: lose the aperture ring but gain a manual-focus clutch

hate to cause jealousy but picked up a near new 12mm for well under $1000 AUD last month (~$800) any yeh people don't get just what difference 1 or 2 mm makes at the wide end of MFT lenses 7 to 9 gives about 25% change in FoV 12 to 15 gives about a the same - that can be the difference between getting a interior shot... or not

Great Video Grant! I have both. The 15mm is perfect: sharp, small and fast. The 12mm, it's expensive, huge, heavy and not sharp at all wide open and if you have the 12-60 Leica lens, there is no point on buying this. The stabilization of the 12-60 is much superior and makes the 1.2 aperture of the 12mm not needed.

Hi Grant I need your help! I have the ability to get the 12mm for less than $800 AUD brand new and before this I was about to pull the trigger on the 42.5mm. I currently use the 25mm Panasonic Leica to take photos of my kids mainly but your reviews, coupled with the price, makes the 12mm a very alluring option now. How do you think the 12mm go as something of a "portrait" lens given characteristically its more a street/lndscape lens. I know in close there will be great separation between subject and background but yeah. I'm really torn!

12mm (24mm) is not usually a portrait focal length - You can however get creative with 12mm for portraits, and I love mine for family documentary stuff as you can really tell a story! However, not really know for it's "subject" separation unless you get in tight... The general Portrait focal length is 42.5 (85mm)

@@grantrobertdavies I think that settles that one. I’m gonna pull the trigger on the 42.5mm.
