The best part about art school is getting to meet so many other artists. For those that feel they missed out, remember you can always go back to school as a mature student!

Not going to art school is one of my biggest regrets. But at the time, the risk of how many loans I would have had to take out was just too astronomical for me to bear, and I opted for a "safer" option at a significantly cheaper school. While I don't know if having an art degree would have really had a huge impact on the trajectory of my life, I'll never be really sure that it wouldn't have, and that haunts me.

I’m on my 3rd year of uni and I’m considering dropping out to pursue art! I’m really scared to tell my parents but I’m miserable doing a program that I’m not even interested in and don’t plan to work in! I’m not even sure if I’ll be happy pursuing an art degree but I know it in my heart that I want to do it and won’t regret it! so that’s to say, I don’t think it’s too late! Find some classes, maybe go abroad a bit if it’s too expensive in your country! or smth like that! I hope you find something for you!

GO! Go to art school. If you need a sign then this is it! I learned that this year, from my mom. My mom is 50 years old, she just divorced my father. She'd been married to my dad since she was 19. She told me that she'd wanted to leave my dad for years but it had been me than 30 years, it seemed too late. But let me tell you, She is soooo much happier than she's been in a long time. She struggles more financially but she decorates her house in roses, she eats souffle at restaurants at 8pm with friends, she's hosts parties, she dates, she's happy. It's not too late for you to change your life too :)

KZfaq is my art school thanks to creators like you Tina. I totally get what ppl are saying about regrets but please remember- it’s never too late! I grew up way back when and it took a global pandemic and a video of a young lady painting a picture of a beautiful girl wearing a red hat for me to realize that ART has always been my life-(Thanks Tina😉). If you feel the same- GO FOR IT! Doesn’t have to be school or a degree. Just start somewhere! Never let go of the creativity within!💜

i actually got into a major art school in canada this past month and honestly i really needed this video, i am so bad at comparing myself to other artists especially because i haven't been doing art seriously as long as everybody else..... but for anybody on the fence about art school just know it's genuinely such a different vibe of high school and even more conventional majors, you learn so much so quickly and it's generally a very positive environment in my experience

I think this was a great summary of art school. I didn't attend myself, I got a useless degree in Classical Studies and regret not doing more art, but you nailed the details on why higher education can be great and terrible. The structure is great for undisciplined people like me, the connections were amazing (I still have a bunch of good friends from college), and I too got jobs from my professors. But sometimes a bad professor is a truly terrible thing, and my god, the loans! I'm American, so I have $50,000 in loans, and having graduated in 2012, I only just started making $50k in salary. Anyhow. I miss college and I encourage people to go, IF they know what they're doing. I think your video was really informative and will help people to make the decision that's right for them. Also the art is great!

i went to a state school for my BFA and I honestly had the best time. I had professors who clearly loved what they were doing and that pushed me in my own art. I'm sure that Art Schools are great and have a lot of benefits (like connections) but any school with good professors will give you an amazing experience for a fraction of the cost. Love the video as always!

This. As someone who also is a graphic design major, but still going to college, I chose this path because becoming a self-employed artist is my dream job. The "Fine Arts" major to me seems like stuff you'd see in a museum (correct me if I'm wrong!), and since digital art is what I'm best at, I was lucky to know that there was an illustration track for what I'm studying. Yes, work isn't easy. However, you definitely gave the best answer to the long time question of whether or not art school is worth it! I felt many times in my life that what I was doing was a huge mistake because of other artists stating more cons than pros, so thank you for making this video! Now I'm off to go do some art homework 😁

OMGosh, I did a video (a few years ago) about my art school experience. One of the things I said was definitely there are good teachers and not so good teachers. There are some miserable folks who are intent on breaking students down. I went back to school as an "older" student so I recognized immediately that they were insecure and miserable. My younger classmates, you could see how the teachers words were affecting them, to the point they quit school. I love the advice you gave. Definitely stick to the good teachers. For what I studied, yes there were technical components, but a lot of it was opinion. Something your teacher may not like, your target audience might love.

I too wanted to go to art school. Unfortunately at the time, "Anime isn't art" was the thought at the time. Additionally, while my style has changed over time to reflect my own culture and interest, I too chose the safe option and became an art teacher. One of my professors abandoned me and no longer gave me guidance and advice on my art when she found out I was going into teaching.

I find this colour combination is so iconic of you, and I love the sticker additions on her face! Also I agree with you that some people simply need the structure of a class and a curriculum to guide their development. Even though I'm working now and have learned things on my own, I much prefer the structure. I did take a one-semester class at an art school @ night (outside of my uni major), but I think it depends on the type of program of whether that's long enough to implement the skills into your own interests. Either way I'm glad what you did learn worked out for you!

beautiful work as always! 💖 and interesting chat, as well! i applied to art school a few times after high school but i never got in, so i took my parents' (who are both very academic) advice and applied to uni for english. i got in. then realised it was absolutely not what i wanted at all and the thought of having to be there for at least five years gave me such bad anxiety. i fought a lot with my parents over dropping out and had a really bad mental breakdown and was diagnosed with depression and panic disorder. ended up leaving university. i couldn't really work for a few years after bc i wasn't mentally well enough, and i only moved out at like age 25 bc i really just wasn't well. anyways! doing much better now. still sometimes wonder what it would've been like had i gotten into art school but it is what it is. it's crazy how we have to make such big decisions at such a young age.

Tina, I appreciate you talking about your experience! The general advice from the people around me were also to not go into art. But my college has a good art department and amazing professors. I'm also hoping to gain transferable skills from my courses while taking advantage of the scholarship I currently have. I needed a structure with flexibility so going to a small college was my best bet. This video reassured me that I'm making the right choice because no industry is ever free from risks. I'm sure that I was going to regret it if I didn't take advantage of what I have now.

I’m glad you enjoyed it, but I’m thinking did you take the safe routes with that degree and will you regret not doing what you want?(going to an art school for illustration).
