Welcome to our KZfaq channel! In this video, we will be discussing ankle surgery with Peter Rosenfeld. We will cover a range of topics including how common ankle replacements are, the differences between ankle replacements and ankle fusions, the recovery process for both procedures, and what to expect with ankle replacement. We will also talk about when the right time to have an ankle replacement is, and if it's possible to leave it too late. Additionally, we will touch on the difference between older and younger arthritis patients and what the right choice is for them, and a brief overview of the post-surgery home life. Thank you for watching, and stay tuned for more informative videos on orthopedic surgery and recovery.

I just got an ankle replacement. I damaged my ankle many years ago. So fusion was out of the question. It has gone well so far.

I am 13 days post-op with the Infinity In-bone system. I have had constant ankle pain for eight years - and now ZERO ankle pain ! If your doc recommends it, don't be afraid - do it! It is life-changing!

Hi Love this video. Somewhere I saw a report (or you said it) for something like TARVE a report about ankle replacements etc. Now trying to find it. Can you help. I'm ini this position right now but the UK NHS hospital has kept me waiting since 2019 and now say after all that and all discussions about replacement they now won't give it to me! So I've moved hospitals ! Found this really helpful. Off to a forum clinic today and I still think they want to give me a fusion too... but they've said they will give me the replacement if I want. :D This helps encourage me that this is the right decision. Thank you.

This was extremely helpful, thank you for the information. Have you seen patients with prior deformities (like club foot repaired with z-plasty in my case) so the shape of the foot isn’t normal - how does that effect the decision between fusion and replacement. I’m 39.

Thank you for such valuable insight! I have been researching an ankle replacement since March. I have had arthritis in my ankle since 2017 but at the time my foot had such debilitating arthritis I had a foot fusion on that foot in 2017. Now 6 years later complete bone on bone arthritis in that ankle I am debilitated once again. I am also 5 years post total knee replacement in opposite knee. The recovery from the knee was so difficult I am afraid of another joint replacement, as I am fully aware of the inconvenience and work required to recover fully. But I am 63 and want to be able to do light hiking, work in my garden and ride my bike and travel. This discussion was so helpful! Thank you so much!!

I just turned 30 and will need another surgery in the next few years as my arthritis is terrible. I shattered my heel bone when I was 26 and after surgery developed ankle arthritis. My surgeon said I will likely need an ankle fusion in the future (likely need it now) but I want to hold off and wait as long as I can hopefully until the technology improves to ceramic ankle replacement hardware so it will last 20 to 25 years like knee and hip replacements. Then if I need to get one more ankle replacement after that it will last me the rest of my life and I wont lose mobility and will be able to still do most sports. (I would like to stay very active and all my other joints are good) so I think this is my plan. Great video thank you

To anyone who is in pain and thinking this surgery is an alternative. I’m sorry you have gotten to this point I urge you to really pray on this. I’m went to Duke University Hospital one of the best. So here is the story the first one I got an infection. The implant was removed and replaced with the Old style. The story is so long it would take so long to tell. Go to a dermatologist for rejection to the metals. Or a blood test I live in pain all the time. I wish you the best for those in this situation.

Excellent interview. I was surprised by the assertion that with an ankle replacement singles tennis would be possible given the forces generated by accelerating decelerating and twisting even if the impact forces would be less than jogging or running. Doubt was expressed about running but it was not clear whether this was on the grounds of the negative effect on the prosthesis or the motion of the joint with the prosthesis. On the other hand running was mentioned in the context of a fusion about which I am sceptical although there may be isolated cases where sufficient mobility is retained to allow jogging. Perhaps Mr Rosenfeld can clarify?

I have similar concerns. I've been hoping an ankle replacement would be the answer to my severe pain while jogging. If that's not the case, then I'll just keep suffering through it. No way I could give up running.
@petermercadante630
@petermercadante630 Жыл бұрын
@@dsmith1806 My non expert view is that bio mechanically a replacement would allow running but it’s going to be discouraged because of the likely acceleration of the failure of the device. On an individual basis I doubt you are going to get someone able to tell you precisely how quickly the device will fail if you say run 5K twice a week. On the other hand we do need to better understand how the permission to play tennis differs from the advice not to run. Of course you have to bear in mind that needing revision surgery because the device wears out sooner rather than later is something to avoid if possible. It’s not an easy condition with clear cut options

Thank you for this helpful information. My podiatrist has recommended that I have an ankle fusion because it's one and done. An ankle replacement, he said, would have to be redone at some point. It seems like you are saying the opposite. I'm 63 and have bad arthritis. I'll have to ask more questions when I see him.

I’m 30 years old can getting an ankle replacement done in April. I’m past the point of fusion unfortunately.
@petermercadante630
@petermercadante630 Жыл бұрын
Why is that may I ask? The general view expressed was that at your age a fusion would be the preferred option given the durability of the operation whereas a replacement would almost certainly require revision surgery possibly multiple times. I’m not sure why a replacement would be possible but a fusion not.

Can you go from your ankle basically already fusing itself from being arthritic for so long (probably at least 15 years, fractured my Talus in 2005, have 2 plates and 4 or 5 screws) TO a replacement? I REALLY do NOT want to fuse it 😭😭 I MISS high heels and dancing SO much, and I know a fusion will NEVER get me back to normal life. My AFO brace mimics a fusion somewhat and its quite immobile, I know a fusion would be even worse...mu original surgeon keeps telling me fusion is my only ootion because he says you have to be 65 or older for an ankle replacement and yet since joining an ankle triple arthrodesis and an ankle fusion groups on Facebook, I've "met" MANY people younger than ME (40) who have had a replacement !! Im currently on the hunt for a new surgeon because of it! I just want to hear, "yes, we could do an ankle replacement on you" 😢🥺💔
