4 ай бұрынIn this video I discuss whether we can hunt over food plots for whitetail deer hunting or if we just use the food plots to keep the deer on our farm. Hunting the actual plot vs hunting trails coming to the plots.Mature bucks will not tolerate pressure, human intrusion, or constantly smelling humans in a plot, they simply won't use the plot and will move elsewhere or go nocturnal. The first thing to do when setting up a food plot is to make 100% sure the access is rock solid, and that we can hunt the food plot without putting pressure on the whitetails.

So true, ive seen so many foodplots that had the worst entry's and exits and they could have been 100 times better with a little work and thought put into them. A lot of these were on guided hunts. Most were over food plots or Ag fields. A little work with a chainsaw and a leaf blower would have made all the difference. I wouldnt spend a dime or an hour of my time on a plot if i wasnt willing to set it up right. Good topic Wes.

Agreed! Access and wind trumps all. Can’t hunt deer that are not there. We killed 5 out of one plot last fall. 2 bucks (one mature) and 3 does, but we only hunted the right winds, right conditions (we use deercast) otherwise the plot was left unpressured. We also left a sanctuary in cover by the biggest plot that we did not go into from sep-Jan. Found a 160s set of sheds there couple weeks ago. This year I’m gonna play with some screening plantings as I think I can take it to another level in a couple plots. Good stuff Wes!

That is awesome, I bet you were absolutely pumped to walk up on those sheds! I had a client where I did a farm visit a couple of weeks ago that found a perfect match to a giant. He was 170’s all day long and possibly in the 180’s. Thanks for watching!

I think my property has turned into what you Plot Professors call a "doe factory". I can slip in and out for season after season and never see more than 8-10 point younger age bucks. Wish there were more of those mature bucks running around all over the place on my property they just rarely exist. Yes, I'm sure I'm violating some of your recommendations, but when it comes to the reality of deer hunting, we don't live in a perfect world.

Clark you are right, all we can do is the best we can on the farms we have available. Are there mature bucks in the area? Or are the neighbors killing most of the younger ones?

@@DIYfoodplotpro Every few years there's a rumor that some hunter in the area killed a really nice buck but most hunters in my area are not into QDMA. About the only hunters who do seem to be the new out of state hunters who are coming in and spending big dollars on buying land at the prices they are now. Majority of the long time resident "locals" don't seen to care much.

@@clarkwheeler8764 it’s really tough to manage for big deer when the neighbors aren’t on the same page. Sounds like a lot of those good young bucks aren’t making it through the season, or they are leaving when they get closer to maturity.

The average guy hunts kill plots not true food plots let alone destination plots. People have what they have. If everyone hunted only the way habitat “experts “ suggest they would rarely hunt because only 10 percent or less of their back 20 or 40 would be accessible. IMO much of advice given not only doesn’t apply to most hunters situations it actually diminishes the hunting experience. The wind is rarely ever as predicted. Deer rarely follow the script. I always bump deer in “non deer open woods areas”. Point is this stuff looks great on paper. Just make improvements, use common sense, hunt and expect the unexpected…

Hey rich thanks for sharing your experiences! I think it’s totally up to what the hunters are looking for on there farm. Some folks just enjoy getting out, unplugging from society, seeing deer, and having the Opportunity to put meat on the table. Others are more intrested in turning it into a work that they love, chasing mature bucks season after season. There is absolutely nothing wrong with either way, or being some of both. My videos aren’t meant to help everyone have better hunts no matter which end of the spectrum you fall on. Thanks for watching!

Wes im going to try you're scarecrow idea on some beans, if the pressure stops after the beans get established how long will it take before they feel safe?

My area is pretty populated, and deer are use to seeing people occasionally. Within 2 weeks deer were back in the plots right next to the scarecrow feeding. If you pull it, it won’t take them long to get back in there. Thanks for watching

I think the new hunters just locate bedded bucks with drones and collect them that way.

I think drones are going to be banned pretty soon, because I believe some folks will take every advantage they can get it, legal or illegal.

Hey bud off topic but what’s your take on burning your food plots off before tilling?

Nothing wrong with it, it’s an extra step that I’m not going to take. I no till most all plots and I just plant right through the residue. I can see some times when it would be useful, like when you’re establishing a new plot and it’s been in heavy weeds/grass for years. But overall I want to keep my organic matter on top of the ground, shading the ground from weeds, and the summer sun during a drought.
