Even tho Im a mechanical engineer, I was first introduced to C# back in graduate school for a class that dealt with the mathematics and theory of rendering and manipulating 3D shapes in CAD programs (e.g. Creo, Solidworks, etc.). All the projects doing OpenGL rendering were to be done in C#. Useful bit of software, and I currently use the latest release of Visual Studio for doing various projects. Im sure I don't use as much functionality as a full-on developer, but its still quite a useful language.

CAD tools could have interfaces (VB, Python, etc.) but the real work is not in C#. I'm learning C# and I see the how much easier things are at certain level, it's lovely. But as I said, you are not going to work on other engineering areas with it.

Kotlin is edging out Java on the Android scene. You can even use Xamarin for C# on Android with identical performance compared to Java, goes to show how much better optimized C# is than Java. I think C# will replace Java once it goes open source which is only a matter of a few years. C# == Java++.

I do not think you should focus too much on job opportunities. Do not pick any completely outdated language or framework whatsoever. Success follows passion. If you are passionate about gaming and want to create your own games, get into game development. If you like UI and Design, get into JS etc. If you just go for money, the trendy lifestyle or whatever, you will ultimately fail at coding. Of course it may happen later on that you will have to adapt to another framework or language on the job, but this is just another opportunity and will mostly be supported during the job. just start off with whatever you like and feel most comfortable with.

I am from the time before 2001, before .NET release. Here in Brazil at that time, the most important languages were Delphi and Visual Basic. Then Java came and took a great slice of the market, and almost killed Delphi here. In contact with Deitel, I was answered that this language, Delphi, was never largely used in the USA. After Java sucess, I moved on to Visual Basic .NET, until C# took place as the most important .NET language. The war between Delphi and Visual Basic was replaced by Java vs C# war. Then came Python. Here in Brazil in 2020 the situation is: 1) Java 2) C# 3) Python In 2020 after some years away from the language, I am learning it back. .NET Core 5 will be a great multiplataform release that may change the C# fanbase drastically. I have programmed in Cobol, Visual Basic, Delphi, ASP, Javascript, C#, ASP .NET. After C# I will give it a go on Python.

@@Andyonrice over 98% of applicants fail the whiteboard interview for any software development position. most people, usually around 99% of the population will go through around 30 whiteboard interviews or more before finding a position with far less pay. its not to discourage anyone, its just laying down the truth, as most people think they will land a job position immediately, which in most cases will take at the least 3~6 months. Google, Facebook, Amazon, Bloomberg, Fortune-500 companies, Citibank and many other locations, usually immediately fails people, due to their outrageous white boarding questions. OTHER Companies on the other hand will do some aweful sneaky tactics, Like give a person being interviewed problems to solve, because the companies can not solve it on their own, then when you solve it, they tell you, that you failed. Basically having you do their work for free, through the interviewing process. AKA - Homework interviewing. --- Dont EVER do any homework interviews ever. Its their way of not paying you for a job that is actually acting as an interview, but in fact its a problem that the company employees can not solve and they have interviewers come up with answers for them basically having you work for free. Also any and I mean ANY white board interview should not be an entire project. If you are told to solve an entire project, walk out immediately. Its them trying to not pay you for solving their issues/problems. White boarding interviews should not take more than 30 to 45 minutes and should just be a small code around 30 lines of code from a question. If you see yourself writing over 50 lines of code or more or told to do home work and bring solution back, dont do it. This has been talked about ALL over KZfaq and Reddit.

@@TwstedTV It's certainly helpful to hear some of these statistics. Following my own advice, I was able to get a job at a small company in about 3 months as front-end .NET developer receiving the average salary for that position in my area, albeit I have a CS degree and worked as a content developer (not strictly programming) for four years prior, both of which helped a little. I had to lower expectations after failing interviews for Amazon and Deloitte, both still at the phone screening stage. I'm now in a position where I have saved up time and money to test my skills with similar companies again, with some buffer room if I fail. How might someone like me with about 8 years of experience now even approach these whiteboard problems? I'm still assuming that I need to become very skilled at optimization, oop (and functional?), design patterns, data structures, algorithms... and that's a lot to ask right? It's certainly not for everyone, and I may go back to solving easier problems for smaller companies if it doesn't work out. HackerRank and answering StackOverflow questions have helped with the trivia of it all, and simply doing personal projects (or in my case, solving projects at work) has helped with the practical knowledge. As for homework interviewing, WOW that sounds terrible. I like what my last employer did, asked me to create my own problem to solve and they would either okay it or not.

Aspiring developers should choose C# because it's the most popular language in the enterprise. When Deloitte consults for Haliburton on how to manage document access for their 55k employees, it's C# developers proposing .NET projects. Then $7 million in fees exchanges hands and we never hear about it on Reddit / Twitter, or in a "top coding language" poll.

But then, i found out that it's not that easy. I've been looking for a job, but i just didn't have enough experience. A job offer in programming at first, looked like some ancient writing with all those words, like:MVC,SQL,MSSQL,PHP,GIT,SASS,This and that... Bryan Stark Get a processor preferably an i5, i7 with 2.4ghz or more if you’re demoing a program. You don’t want it to seem slow plus when you get an onsite it’s a big opportunity and hard to come by typically. You may also consider a onboard graphics card on CPU or a separate if you’re doing computer vision stuff like OpenCV or gaming demo. They can be run on GPU to be smoother. I also say 16 GB of ram is definitely a goto, but you can upgrade it for super cheap these days around $55 for 16GB unlike for 8GB $110 when I purchased a year and half ago.

I love .NET, C# and F#. But there is one thing that drives me absolutely crazy, that they always "forget" to implement official Linux GUI support to their self-proclaimed cross-plattform stack.. They could easily add it, when they do, we finally would have One.Net, one language, one framework which works for everything in terms of clients, in regards to server stuff, it's already pretty much the best, or at the top, maybe neural network support for ML.NET and stuff like that would push it even more. For that Linux GUI stuff, they just have to add GTK/qt adapter to .NET MAUI / Xamarin (+Forms), or the way the community partially did with Skia at their "Uno Platform", and there is Blazor WebAssembly, they could additionally add an electron or NativeScript wrapper for Web GUIs (made with e.g. HTML/CSS instead of XAML) that would be cross-plattform, since everything it used would be real cross-plattform including Linux.. Of course there is FreeBSD, OpenBSD and other OSes, but Linux is the one which really is needed to get supported officially, since the mentioned other free and open OS alternatives are using GNU tools and desktop environments available for Linux too, it would nearly be free to add them - too, they do run Web, GTK/qt, at least one of them will be available. But like I said, Linux is more relevant, nobody uses the other stuff except myself kappa, there is just no reason to provide it to us... They even will add (Linux) Smartwatch GUI support for .NET MAUI, but no real Linux... BTW, I use Arch and VS Code. :D Last thing I know which would be nice for .NET is real TPL for WebAssembly, TPL is indeed available but it's currently faking multithreading, it's currently single threaded, like they do in JS with e.g. their Promises and async, so this would be a huge upgrade, C# could be the first WASM lang with multithreading support. Would be relevant for desktop apps wrapped in e.g. Electron like mentioned above, running .NET in WebAssembly instead of JS. Currently for heavy background tasks which need their own thread is no way with that, we would have to ship an additional real cross-plattform ASP.NET (Core) app handling that by e.g. an local gRPC request to it by the Blazor App.. AoT Compiler.. When they fix all of that with .NET 6, it would be just perfect, no reason to use anything else, except for some niche context like developing BTC ASICs or low level OS stuff like a Linux Kernel.

.NET is built around C# & F#. Now .NET 5 will offer excellent solutions for - Machine Learning via ML .NET - IOT - Mobile Apps - Game Development - GUI’s on Windows aaaand all of those other 50k something APIs all in one runtime and nothing else. On top C# is pretty fast with great tooling. So you get pretty much everything you’d wanna do in programming in just one language. With Java I’d have to learn different non-unified APIs. I don’t see any reason not to learn it, you get acquainted with many different technologies and then you’re able to switch fast to ‘industry tools’. And F# leverages the power of the framework for Data Science.

I don’t really care for all that cloud and webservice shit. It’s not really solving issues - hell it makes solutions more complex because there’s so many abstractions so that dumb programmers can “make” stuff. I realized recently when I had a retro big that coding on 6502 ik assembler and later on 68000k and 80x86 mainly in assembler but C would also do. That we did network services already in the early 90s. But a hell of a lot faster and more efficient and better Lowlevel control. It’s just that most developers don’t know how to write protocols on IP or IPX. They don’t know how to write small and efficient code. An average webservice consumes many megabytes of memory!!! We did that in kilobytes, and big even on that low powered hardware it still runs as fast or faster as in the almost infinite cloud performance. So I think we should go back to smaller hardware and smaller frameworks and leaner protocols. Get rid of many of these pseudo-programmers who couldn’t write an assembler program to save their life’s. To me IT really lost its charm and challenge over these last 31 years.
