Experimenting with a new type of video. It's hard during lockdowns to get games played enough to warrant a full review but people want my full opinions on them. So I figured what about a first impressions video? Less effects, less messing around in the editing room (though I think I still overdid it this episode) and me talking over a playthrough of the game whether using the physical game or Tabletop Simulator (official templates only of course like this one).
Obviously if I'm doing a full review, that will be a proper video like the Lost Ruins of Arnak and Under Falling Skies reviews.
Let me know if this is something you'd like me to continue or pursue further. It's a work in progress idea and will develop over time, refining some loose edges and nicks along the way. I mean this was meant to be a short video in less than 10 minutes and I failed miserably. . . . Your feedback and support is always appreciated!
The footage I know could have been better, but my initial 4 player footage was corrupted because i used something other than OBS to record it and it was choppy as hell, unusable. So I had to basically speed run a solo game for footage to get it out. :-( Rest assured should I continue the series, you will get a proper tabletop playthrough overhead cam or a proper multiplayer experience for footage as I now trust OBS.
So let's give you my "semi" detailed thoughts about Praga Caput Regni!!

I like this style of review. I usually listen to videos in the background so having the visuals to peek at sometimes is nice.

Thanks - it won't be the norm, but it's a good alternative if I can just keep the length shorter and plan the footage in advance.

I like it that Broken Meeple isn't a paid preview and frankly dish out what's on his mind about opinions on games. I am extremely curious about a review for beyond the sun hopefully you'll get to play it soon!

I really enjoyed this new format, I agree with the comment about wanting the video of an actual playthrough. Cheers!

Thanks for the review. As usual it was informative and gave some food for thought. As soon as I saw this game, I knew I had to have it. I’m a sucker for a good Euro, history and Prague. Last night I solo played it for the first time in order to learn and be able to teach. ( I scored 88, not bad for my first try)I love the aesthetics of the boards and components. I also like the various mechanics of the game, the many paths to victory and what seems to be a high replayability factor. The solo mode is fine and is a good practice mode. I’m sure it playes better with more players. I am concerned though with AP for some. I’m looking forward to exploring more of this game.

Ari - if you're going to play it solo go to the Delicious Games website and get the print and play AI cards. Just 5 cards. The biggest thing is that the AI puts out buildings. deliciousgames.org/praga-caput-regni-cz

Feels like a lot of different mechanics I've seen in various games. Big, crunchy, attractive, euro. I just wish they'd start having themes that are more interesting than yet another historical theme.

Sadly, it's the "safe" route to go. Just do a bit of history research and there you go.

This is a different case. This game is a labor of love. Vladimir lives in Prague (at least in the Czech Republic). I can identify with his desire to design such a game. I have been to Prague 3 times, it’s not my home but one of my favorite cities. So I can just imagine how Vladimir feels about it.

Disagree. Historical theme is a huge draw for a lot of us. It's satisfying. It's something a lot of people love, including me.

Great format, Luke! Would definitely be interested in seeing more of these in the future. Did you find it significantly easier to produce?
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 3 жыл бұрын
Not really though easier than the norm. The problem was, it was an unplanned alternative and my original footage of a multiplayer game was jerky as hell (thanks to bad software) so I had to spend time re-recording on decent OBS software to get what I used. On top of that, despite wanting the video to be short, I went into full DETAIL review mode so I need to find a way to condense first impressions down, otherwise I might as well have done a full DETAIL review. So there are some teething issues but with more of a plan, future ones shouldn't be as bad.
@Original_Maverick
@Original_Maverick 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I was gonna say I thought this one was a touch longer than the last few reviews you had done. I know the goal was to make "First Impressions" a brief overview with light thoughts. Regardless, it doesn't bother me. I'm sorry you ran into trouble with the software.. As always, great content!

True on the online vs off line. Specially they tabletopia or tabletop simulator. If it was a more automated process like an actual app or thru board game arena then I would say online is a lot faster.
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 3 жыл бұрын
On BGA of course it's much faster, but then it's like I don't even get to play around with 3D pieces let alone hold a nice physical piece in my hand :P
@felixchu7656
@felixchu7656 3 жыл бұрын
True that... I miss the feel of metal coins and wooden meeple and even just holding cards in my hands. But I can't deal with the finickyness of tabletopia or tabletop simulator... so its bga and the likes for me until these lockdowns ends. *throwing fists up at covid*

There are actually some ways in which TTS is faster. But yes overall it is slower than real life. But in TTS, shuffling cards is faster, and in games with a huge board, where people are standing up to reach things, it's actually easier on TTS.

I have to say the busy artwork on the board (where's Waldo 🤣 ) turned me off right away. It reminded me of Reavers of Midgard. Just to busy for me to even want to try the game. My eyes would hurt after playing this game. I did like this format video. First Impressions are often the biggest impression, you can change you mind, but it takes more to do so.
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it's not like the rating would change significantly. But this format if I stop talking for ages and plan my footage better won't take me as long to edit, but I don't want this to be the "norm" for my reviews, just an alternative.
@shanerion

I hate tall, vertical boards. And for some reason I do not like playing with them sideways. The videos I've seen of people playing this in real life have the board sideways so they don't have to stand up and reach to get to the wheel up at the top right. But then the art, and everything is sideways. I want to want this, but I don't understand why they ever made boards in the portrait orientation.

I like the idea of this type of video... but for me I would actually have rather watched an actual play-through while you talked over it... as opposed to just someone moving tiles back and forth. I would have gotten a better sense for actual turns if it was an actual play-through of your 3 or 4 person game. That's my 2 cents for what they're worth.

It was me playing a solo game but I get your point. Sadly my main footage was choppy as hell through a different recorder.

@@TheBrokenMeeple Ha really? It totally looked you kept taking a tile and then just putting it back :) I guess I didn't understand the game at all! ;) Looks intriguing though. And definitely my very first thought in the first 30 seconds of the game was that it was Where's Waldo artwork. which strangely appeals to me. Also reminiscent of Raiders of Scythia. but more Waldo-ey.

Tracks, tracks... again another duplicate version of teotihuacan. Seems there is no interest to play more than one player as there are almost no interactions. That is my problem with this designer, he only makes solo games !
