Should you play SWOTR in 2024 as a new player or even a returning player? Is it worth it? First launched in 2011, Star Wars: The Old Republic is the longest-running Star Wars MMORPG still around, but the question for many is whether or not the game is still worth playing in 2024, especially after the transition from Bioware to Broadsword.
The good news is that SWTOR is a deep, richly immersive game, and so far Broadsword has been doing a great job of adding to the already massive Star Wars experience that Bioware built up over more than a decade of Star Wars: The Old Republic running as a live service.

I started 3 weeks ago ( FFXIV player), and I'm loving every minute of it. I love that it's soloable and the story is SO good. The voice acting is great the combat is decent for it's age. I just love the game.

Only thing that is missing is that the leveling was way better back in the days. The companions are way to op. You will not face any challenges.

Fair and the story is the best thing about swtor. I am playing swtor since release, but it is a little goofy if you finally fight a big bad and he dies while you can make yourself a coffee and be afk. @@Renfail

I been on and off since launch, really never leveled past 16 but about 3 days ago I got into, subscribed and not stopping. I come from WoW . Been playing wow since day 1 launch and never stopped and never will but since WoW classic came out, I’m now only classic exclusively. I’m really enjoying SWTOR . I’m a huge Star Wars fan since I first watched a new hope back in 1988, (I’m 41 and was about 6 years old in 88) and since then I’ve gotten both my daughters and my wife into it. Thank you for the great content.

Been playing it since December 2023 and I cannot get enough of this game's character class storylines. I have completed the Sith Warrior storyline first and I can confirm that I'm now a patriot of the Empire. I also want to get into the mmorpg aspects of the game at some point ( I had always played rpgs and not as much mmorpgs except for AION and Tera online. ) However, I cannot see myself abandoning this game ever. I'm quite certain that with each story update I'll at least login and make sure that I don't have any lose ends to cover. The recent improvements regarding the cinematics ( camera angles, character stories and first person engagement )also make me super happy. Overall I feel that the team of SWTOR does make sure to pay attention to detail to best of their means. To summarize, I only wish that I had known of this game sooner.

Great video! Swtor is an amazing game, played all classes but fell in love with The Sith Juggernaut & Sith Sorcerer! Lol and now with all these cosmetics i have the sorc in madness with Darth Nihilus Outfit & The Jugg as Darth Sion, took a few cartel coin purchases but couldn't be happier 😎

I played in the beggining, when it wasn't free to play yet, and played for a little time, but then my computer at this time broke and I couldn't play for a long time and forget it. Now so much things changed in my life, and I remembered the game, wasn't sure if the game would still be alive (just like LOTRO is alive until today), or if it would die... and I started searching and found your video, and I'm SO HAPPY to know the game is living and playable!!!! Back in the game after a decent break, I’m pretty sure the Hutt expansion was the last time I played, I’m going through Trooper class as an operative, it’s a lot of fun, very rogue like but with trooper beef lol, I’ll be subscribing soon, I’m a sucker for cosmetics. Helps with RP immersion.

I think f2p gets level capped at 60 and story capped after Rise of the Hutt Cartel. Even if you sub for one month the current level and all the story expansions up to that point are unlocked for you forever. If you are bad at remembering to cancel subscriptions the two month subscription option is a one time non recurring payment.

Unless something has changed in recent years, there is no story or level cap. I've personally played F2P in 2023 and leveled up a character through to the end of the Revan expansion without issues.

@@Renfail I believe that the Revan expansion is the end of the Free-to-Play story and you need to subscribe to continue past that. When your subscription ends, you retain access to all expansion story content available on the last day of your subscription.

I'm an old republic guy, and this is still my favorite Star Wars game. If I had one wish, it would be for Legacy portability across any server because playing a new character on your server is just too painful. ;)

I started today! I am playing Sith Assassin. I tried to do a couple of the first "side missions" but the it seemed like the necessary items objects were not present (explosives to blow up eggs in first tomb). Not sure if I have to come back to it later or not. I finished the first mission! Got the sword out of the tomb and went back to the Sith Academy. I'll check your other content before asking any questions.

Awesome review I played on and off since launch on the American server stopped playing in 2013 or 14 came back here and there for a month just to buy and sell on the gtn but now Australia has a server I subbed 2 months and really enjoying the no lag factor sure iam not a billionaire like on the American server this time iam building all my characters to max

I still remember logging on for the first time a few days after the game launched. It was so much fun and it was nice to find some missions and areas that were easter eggs to KOTOR and KOTOR II. The game died for me when they went down the Emperor Valkorion storyline though. I logged onto my account last year for the first time in years, I wanted to see Dantooine because it was always one of my favourite KOTOR planets. I quickly realised how long it had been and came to the conclusion that the game was no longer for me. It's mad to think this game came out in 2011, I really am getting old lol

If you can afford it, go VIP from the start to get the maximum quality of life features. Or play F2P until you cross the threshold of more than five hours a week IMO; if you are playing it more than that, it's totally worth having a monthly sub.

@Renfail Look, I played back in Beta all the way up to the major nerf to how the leveling system used to be, it used to be three trees and you could take anything in those trees, they nerfed that and changed it to a strict path rather than a tree, took away powers every time they did a level cap increase and moved them to higher tiers, so you once again had to work to gain levels to get abilities you already had. I also quit because they took away some of the fantastic looking animations away and replaced them with some very bland, generic and obtuse animations in the name of "balance." I simply was not having it and split. There were other reasons, such as the ridiculous crystals they started coming out with for Lightsabers, but those were very secondary reasons I left. Were any of those nerfs reversed, or does the game still feel like it was changed so that 5 year olds can play it?

As mentioned in the video, Operations (raids). Difficulty depends on the gear level of the peeps and whether or not they work well together. No different than WOW or FFXIV.

No; there are way too many quests for them to realistically track them. There are planet quests, world quests, class quests, so many quests.

Played for years since 2011, then several years back, 2016-17 maybe I stopped playing regularly. Never knew Bioware no longer ran it. In 2018 dipped my toe in it again, it was OK but I couldn't justify playing it anymore so gave all my money and characters to my nephew. Only hear as just interested in what's happened to it. I put up a vid on my channel the other day that I'd found on my backups, of us at the end of BETA all dancing until the server went off. As you're now saying its no longer an MMO, surely, before its closed, could they not switch it to offline mode so people that own the original, can play it offline?

I’ve been playing mmorpg since the original Guild Wars was first released and I’ve been trying different ones ever since. I’ve tried this a few years ago and this is by far my favorite with being a huge fan of Bioware from Kotor to Dragon Age to Mass Effect.

Yes, the game is great. The story is very good, the solo parts are fun and interesting. Also if you prefer the Expanded Universe over Disney-era Star Wars the game is a must have. PvP is good too. The only real con of the game that high end PvE endgame (harder Veteran and Master operations) are kinda unavailable for most players. Only small elitist groups do them and you will never be invited into it. You need to have connections to do the content you want to. It's like real world nepotism. That's the only thing that I really dislike in the game, and Broadsword should address it somehow, even tough I have no idea how that's possible. But if you are not interested in that content, you will love the game.

The game should still reward veteran players if they bring new ones with them. Like getting double loot from bosses if there are 2-3 teammates who don't have the achievement. Or something like that.@@Renfail

Veterans like myself have enjoyed the game over the course of its entire lifespan, and will continue to do so until it sunsets. People who quit on it aren't part of the equation.

Disclaimer: Best MMO I've ever played. Just understand it's fully voiced until level 50. After that with all the additions your character doesn't talk any more. Which stinks and for me wasn't as fun. Also as much I've played over the years, it's been awhile though, the game is just too easy. You don't even need a companion it's that easy. They dumbed it down big time. The housing is cool though, I enjoyed that.

Star Wars Galaxies has been dead and gone for a very, very long time. This is the only live service Star Wars MMORPG active today, and yes you can get droids and ships and fly and stuff. Do some due diligence :)

I loved SWTOR and played it intensively after it was released, always hoping that a Mac client would be released at some point. Unfortunately, that never happened and the cumbersome option of playing SWTOR via Bootcamp has also been exhausted since Apple Silicon. Unfortunately, Bioware has ignored Mac users and using expensive virtualisations like Parallels just to play the game is out of the question for me. I would like to continue my subscription, but Bioware doesn't seem to be interested in Mac users. Too bad.

The reality is that Mac users make up less than a single percentile of the playerbase. It's not worth it from an engineering standpoint.

@@Renfail Very sad, however, other studios do not have an issue with that. Look at Blizzard (WoW) or "No man's Sky", which is available as a native mac version, Baldurs Gate 3 recently, too. Today, it's not.a big effort or issue to compile a game to a native mac app. Apple has provided tools for metal that more or less translate the source code with almost no effort. I still believe, it's more a "political" desicion the developers have to follow, considering the consolisation of the two main gaming fractions: Microsoft/X-Box/PC and Playstation/Sony.

It is a VERY big effort, and not every studio has the budget. The fact that you think it isn't shows a lack of education on the subject. I've been in game dev for 10 years, and I would personally NEVER approve a feature on a project when it has single digit percentile amount of players compared to our target audience. It's man hours, and has NOTHING to do with politics. Such misinformation; ugh. @@SFAutor

I tried to gte back into SWTOR ovre Xmas... I couldn't even buy 1 month's worth of subscription, the website wouldn't let me! And I have no interest in playing as a Preferred Player, I can't use my top-level gear. I asked for help and got no where. So I just didn't bother and bought another game entirely. Disappointing.

I’ve been casually playing for the past 4 years. I resubbed to wow for the first time in that period of time and holy cow, SWTOR has me spoiled. WoW is just as grindy as it ever was, the business model sucks (I don’t think it’s right to make customers pay for an expansion on top of a subscription). I won’t be going back to wow.

big correction to the statement that you dont have to pay to play all of it, YOU SHOULD PAY, the story moves so slowly when you are not a sub that the game will become very boring and youll quickly forget it

Yah no that's not the reason you sub. You sub because you want to support the team to make more, not to simply "go faster". Ugh, today's mindset......

@@Renfaili wanna support the team, i played this a lot, but i know that if going from level 20 to 30 takes you a month, or more, then the game just becomes tedious, if i want somthing like like, i just work lol to be clear, you pay not to go faster, but to have the entire exp to level up and the xp of playing the game no one is going to be interested in reaching chapter 3 if finishing chapter 1 takes two months of flaspoints just to have the right level

of course we all want an inmersive world, dam i tried 5 different mmo looking for that and swtor was the best, BUT, it tottally cuts the inmersion when the player cant go far, we basically have to pay monthly for the entire experience, saying that we dont have to, is completly ignoring a month of grinding flashpoints just to reach the basic level, remember that xp is cut in half so yeah, every 2 days counts as 1 day, if people have no problem with the same FPs for a month, then yeah we dont have to pay, but don't ignore reality@@Renfail
