Should You Play WoW Classic Season of Discovery?

World of Warcraft Classic is an extremely popular option for many to get a fix for the golden era of MMORPGs and with Season of Discovery now available and the ease of access and easy on the eyes graphics, even if WoW Classic is aging, makes it an easy pick for many, But I've been playing a lot of Season of Discovery with many in my community, and as a guy who has never been a big fan of World of Warcraft, I have to say, I've been having a blast : Season of Discovery takes World of Warcraft Classic to new levels with the old meta broke, a new raid, some new quests, the Rune abilities for every class and a substantial amount of players on all of the servers creating an incredibly high level of satisfaction while exploring and playing this classic gem. Season of Discovery breathes new life into WoW Classic while also staying true (so far) to the original at the same time, and that's not easy to do, but it looks like Blizzard has pulled it off. Today, I want to talk about whether YOU should play WoW Classic Season of Discovery or not, We'll talk the good, the bad and everything in-between to help you make that decision!
The very first thing I want to cover is that WoW Classic Season of Discovery is still very much World of Warcraft Classic : Yes, it has new features, yes it has changes, but the spirit, the feeling, the majority of the time you'll spend on one of the Season of Discovery servers will be filled with doing the same things you typically do on a Classic Server : The XP Quests, some grinding between, running to a fro the zones : But there is a fundamental change here and it affects everything in subtle ways : For one, you'll occassionally run across something different and new : A wounded guard in a cave, a new NPC high atop a tower, or a random mysterious drop off of a kill : And these interesting pieces will lead you to finding a rune : Which once unlocked, you can slot into an aromor piece to give yourself an ability that is new to World of Warcraft Classic : Having these abilities changes up the way you will play your class, and this is in essence the largest change to Season of Discovery : Some of these are easy to get, while others are a little more involved and quest-like in nature : But it accomplishes the namesake of Discovery and unless you are using guides or upcoming Add-ons to make it easy : finding them yourself or through the rumors of the community is an absolute joy, and FEELS right for WoW Classic in my opinion.
The second thing is the level cap : Instead of going to 60, Season of Discovery has a current level cap of 25, with plans to increase it over time. And this means that at level 25 players can experience a brand new raid in BlackFathom Deeps but it means a lot more : It means that noone in Season of Discovery is able to get a mount, it means that casual players have a chance to catch up rather easily, it means that Best in Slot has been turned upside down, and that's even before I mention that there are new gear drops and loot that didn't exist before in Classic WoW. These changes are felt as everyone is exploring the world on foot : Making the entire world feel larger and forcing you to slow down and smell the roses a bit. It means that in Season of Discovery you may run that dungeon a few more times to try to find a new piece of gear, It also means that inventory is different : the size of bags available at this level cap changes the way you behave and treat the bank, it means that with the 25 level cap currently - WoW Classic is now more approachable than ever and it's a great time for a WoW noob like me to dive in and give these servers a go.
And beyond what Season of DIscovery offers currently, the REAL important thing to remember here is that Blizzard has broken the rules with WoW Classic, it means anything is possible for the future : As we move through level caps, will we have something beyond 60? Will we move through brand new expansions and into new stories almost like an alternate reality? Did Blizzard create a way to fix the mistakes of the past and offer a new experience that stays true to the roots of MMORPGs? The possibilities of what could happen to this version of WoW Classic are the most exciting of all and it's these thoughts that makes Season of Discovery actually special and impactful to the playerbase : And what a playerbase it has, the servers are loaded with people enjoying, grouping, leveling and exploring and sharing their findings : It's a rebirth of WoW Classic and it's a wonder to behold.

I don't think it will be too crazy with Season of Discovery, but it's going to lay the foundation for where the game goes.

Agreed. Enjoying SOD myself! Hope they continue to iterate as they increase the level cap and use this as a way to experiment in ways they simply cannot with retail or OG classic.

I went back for the chance to tank with a rogue, but now I'm having a blast playing a rogue with a shotgun especially in pvp. I'll get to that tanking stuff eventually but having too much fun to respec right now.

Also... I actually enjoyed Cataclysm, I think it could be fun if they don't take the approach they did back in the day and nerf the dungeons into the ground. But the one benefit of Cataclysm Classic is it eventually leads to Mists of Pandaria Classic. People had silly hate-ons for the panda's, but the actual content was great.

Been having a blast. Literally lol. Lvl 25 arcade Mage. These runes are just broken op! Love it.

I'm glad you are having fun with it, Nathan. It's too bad you are playing on a server where open battle at the crossroads isn't a possibility. I would have enjoyed bringing the fight to you and your allies. ;)

There is always Ashenvale or you can flag yourself for open world pvp as well (I'll be your huckleberry;) This is my first time playing Alliance and playing on a non-pvp server in classic and it's not too bad so far. Also lots of quests and other actions will flag you for pvp so you might be surprised how much ganking and open world pvp occurs. I got my first victim on my first visit to Tirisfal Glade. Besides the RPPVP server was swamped at launch and is having more problems than the others from what I've seen.

@@Peace_Dog I started on the RPPVP server and I don't have time for two classic + characters, but I wish you fun, loot and hot rivalries in ashenvale and otherwise, @Peace_Dog!

This is my opinion, and you are allowed to disagree. Nathan and I share a love for old school mmorpgs, and I believe his 1st was EQ, while mine was Asheron's Call. Two entirely different game play styles. EQ was a group based game with slower combat and zoning, while AC has a zoneless world with faster paced combat while being very solo friendly. I feel Classic is the perfect hybrid between these 2 play styles. If you make Classic too tedious it wouldn't work, and if too fast it corrupts into the retail Wow issue we see today. I found SoD "retailed" Classic. You obtain too much, too early, and the game's difficulty feels trivialized. Can it be objectively fun? It sure can, and is to a point. Does it have the potential to destroy the very balance of play style that separated it from all others, and brought players back to it? It absolutely does if this power curve, class dynamics, and character growth hits live servers as Classic+ components. Classic+ only requires a new content stream and minor tweaks to balance and quality of life. SoD is a "Prizes for everyone!", shiny carnival, and I understand why players would lap that up, but I see too many core principles of design being violated, and the future of Classic scares me. Blizzard may be, and always have been fully aware of this and adjust accordingly when it comes to Classic+, but the current state of the game is nervously far off the benchmark.

Nathan's first love was DAoC i believe. Classic became stale for me awhile ago so I am surprised how much fun I am having with SoD, but I am for now. I could care less what it means for the meta mmo market or whatever. Then again, I rarely give that sort of thing a second thought since I march to my own beat. My formula is simple: game is fun = I play game. Game stops being fun = I stop playing.

@@Peace_Dog Indeed. Some will play, and leave when something else appeals to them. Classic is sustained however by long term players who have dedicated themselves to the game so much, that Classic was risen from the grave due to pservers. Fair weather players do not sustain Classic. A long term vision is required, and the failings of most mmos is the total lack of a long term vision, and are instead reactionary which has often radically changed to original concept of the game. Retail Wow has virtually failed because of this. Classic is popular again because of this, and changing that recipe to consolidate Blizzard's remaining audience is not a long term vision, but a reactionary one. I could ignore the warnings of the past and be completely selfish, but I explore the macro view too often to be so bound to self only interests. I'm tired of jumping endlessly between games. I refuse to bounce between Blizzard game launches and patches like one of Pavlov's dogs like most players have been conditioned too. This will not change, and is the root of many issues. I am aware I am speaking into the wind, because modern players are only interested in self-gratification. They'll burn their own games down for trinkets and conveniences. Evidence of this has been repeated ad-nauseam.
