I started having this debate with students about 2 years ago. I came to the exact same conclusion. Nice to hear someone more acknowledged explaining his point of view. thanks !

The only advantage of the preload pop is the kinetic energy of your body weight, making a better carve possible and be less influenced by chop. Windwindow is dynamic, so the explanation about flying forward/backward is not completely true, it's the window that shifts forward/backward and the kite that responds to that new window. I'm always amazed about how people would explain that you have to edge hard so the kite shoots forward to dump power in overpowered conditions, but at the same time have to edge hard so the kite shoots forward for the most powerful jumps.
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk 4 ай бұрын
Totally agree on the kinetic energy and dynamic wind window. I decided to go for a simple explanation as the dynamic wind window is something I can dedicate an entire video to 😅 Carving hard upwind does slow you down, but first you'll feel an increase in power which you can use to jump high, when you carve through that power you'll be able to slow down.
@Faxie83

@@stevenakkersdijk Agreed. A dynamic window video couldn't hurt, I think there are a lot of misconceptions in the sport.

Thanks for the video !!! happy to see that I know the theory well. Now just have to keep practicing. You are saying the pre load pop is useless in light wind, but I've find it easier to start it in light wind to avoid getting yanked when sending the kite tho.
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
For practise you can definitely do it in light winds, but it has less of an effect on your final jump height. Good luck practising 🤙

I don't know why, but I can only pop the side I don't jump on... the side I jump on doesn't pop, as if the legs were locked, it's weird.
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
I know that feeling, you just have to keep on trying and figure out why it's not working. Are you not carving? are you not lifting your legs? There are a lot of options 😉

I think in choppy conditions with medium/strong wind the preload is kinda mandatory in order to mantain the speed absorbing the first wave by hopping over it and carving hard into the second one. In flat water the benefit is minimal so I fully agree
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
It definitely helps a lot to place your carve in the middle of the chop. Use it a lot for exactly that.

one of the key points of the jump with preload pop is that it goes more vertical, adding more control to tricks
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure if I agree with you there. By popping off the water the kite will actually sit deeper in the window making it harder to do a vertical jump.

I did this by accident today. I have seen it in a video a few years ago. Though I'm not sure that I did an ollie first, but rather did the initial motion of a pop, and then flew down wind for a second before popping. Damn I must've gotten 1/3 higher than I'd been jumping today on the flat. So I tried a few more times with varying success. The main thing I was unsure about was were the kite should be prior to the pre-load pop. I'll give 11 and then send to 12 while still in the air. Thanks for the video. It took me a little while to find it as I wasn't sure what this trick was called but watched one of your other videos in which you mention pre-load pop.

It's a great suggestion. To be honest I didn't really know much about the pre load pop because I just did it in some cases and not on others. Don't think the video will come any time soon as I have a priority on some other videos. Thanks again for the suggestion, and I might dive back in to the subject at a certain point.

I think there is another slight benefit to preloadpoppers. Holding tension in your legs while edging takes effort, and releasing/changing position for even just that moment, allows extra explosive force to be applied in the carve. Standard practice in freestyle riding , innit. Another great video. Cheers bro.

Your exemple is in nearly glazzy water! In very choppy condition (meaning very little kickers but very high frequency of very small waves as 20cm high each 30cm), it is quite difficult to find an efficient technique to make a good high jump, especially when riding quite front to the small waves. Some tips to help?😎

Hi .great video as always😃 how About a video that describes where you should have the bar during the carve. I struggle with getting height over 8-9 meters regardless of what size kite. There are a lot of videos talking about speed , carve and turning the kite. But haven’t seen anyone talking about where the bar is positioned on during the carve..

Nice video... The time is very important.. i have a question about It... If i riding with a 14mq and 19 knots... The kite when i preload Is a Little slow to back inside the Window'wind... There Is to Say that i riding with the kite very low for more Speed... And for go at 12 o'clock the kite Need a Moment more... So i ask... In this condition do you think that i can approciate with "jump prepop" not "while" but "After" Turning the kite... it's a mistake for you? Or not? Thanks in advance

On the bigger sizes it does make sense to do your pre load pop a moment after you steered the kite up towards 12. So I totally agree to what you're saying 🤙
@iksardy
@iksardy Жыл бұрын
Hi Steven, great video as always👍. I have a question though. You are saying that by preload popping you decrease the line tension a little bit. In very light wind (14-16 knots on 12m) I’m trying to do the opposite - to increase the line tension by popping a little bit upwind and sheeting the bar in a little bit. In my experience this helps the kite to fly faster to 12 and jump higher. What is your opinion? Thank you very much.
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
There are many ways to do a pre load pop and if I would carve before the pop it would have a totally different effect. If you feel like it makes a difference I guess you're on the right track 🤙 Can't really make any other comments on it as I would have to see it instead of reading about it 😉

I've tried this many times, but never works form me because I lose all my edge on the jump, and I can't stomp on the water because the kite is already pulling me up when I hit the water and I just end up with nothing. I might be jumping too late
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
Hard to say what you should improve on by reading your description. My suggestion would be to stick with a normal carve towards the wind without a pre load pop.
@Gliping
@Gliping Жыл бұрын
I have a question 🤔- can you overcurve in strog wind, so you cant even load a pop? I mean- i make preload pop in tow cases - 1) i need to overjump my bubby right now , even if my kite to high 2) i get somehow tons of tention in line, and I need to move it gentle towords 12, in order not to show a master class on bodydrag (i just fiel that i can't load normal jump on full speed)
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
Timing is key when jumping and to me it sounds like you should carve later. Make sure you steer the kite up first and only start carving when the kite is close to 12

Steven u said in the video u should not pre load pop in over powered conditions i don't agree with that
@stevenakkersdijk
@stevenakkersdijk Жыл бұрын
Why do you disagree? Curious to hear your explanation. (Of course it also depends on what you call overpowered. For me overpowered is the moment where you're having a lot of trouble to hold your edge and a gust will accelerate you so much that it's nearly impossible to slow down)
