@Derek Gardin What’s wrong with including an access panel in the trunk? Is that too unreasonable a demand? Cars like BMWs and Mercedes often have their struts replaced twice in a car’s lifespan, it’s how their suspension is sprung, very sporty, more jarring in the road and on suspension components.

As an Engineer, the remarks themselves are stupid. Try dealing with upper managament / marketing that want to advertise X-amount of cabin space, eventhough the body stays the same size. Try creating strut access when the cabin is in the same volume. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

@@standyourground9973 engineering these vehicles is pretty much beyond the average persons comprehension... you all complain, but you don't realize how much thought has to go into keeping manufacturing costs down, keeping up with safety standards, and CAFE standards. I installed quick struts on my car based on advise from an earlier video of yours. The old struts were shot and the car was nose diving and bottoming out on wavy roads. They work great and went in nicely. In fact, I used the same kind you are using in this video. It's definitely worth doing and not as hard as I thought it would be.

I've used quick struts in the past, and they are great. On our 2001 Buick that had 170,000 miles, the replacements had stiffer springs, so the car ride was harsher. On that car, the nuts for the top of the struts were under a rubber cup, and very easy to get to just by opening the trunk lid. The ones I installed on our 1998 Mercury Villager were just like the original ride. I also installed new ones in my daughter's 2002 Hyundai were also like the original springs, and they were also very easy to install, just like the Buick.

I've done this a couple times and it really is the best way to do it. My only problem was the car I did it on was so old it was hard to find quick strut assemblies for it. You can do it with hand tools but having an impact that makes it a much easier and it does it only take a few hours.

Did this to my 2008 Chevy Cobalt. Garage wanted to do it for $900. After buying the strut assemblies and stabilizer bar links it only cost around $150. However, you must be warned that it takes serious elbow grease to get the old parts unbolted. 3 of them, one on the strut and two on the stabilizer links were impossible to get off, so I used an angle grinder to remove them. It was a tough few days, but I did it.

I put quick struts on my old Prius. They work. But that’s about it. They don’t seem to hold the back too well with too much weight. But at least they work. I did it because of their expected lifespan vs. how long I was gonna keep the car for, which I eventually got rid of. Saved many hundreds of dollars with that decision.

So far, the struts continue to work properly absorbing the bumps. I prefer buying the full strut assembly because you get a new shock mount, a new coil, a new strut, etc. The parts that surround the strut wear and weaken, and should be in my opinion replaced. My mechanic said they have never had a KYB failure. And all my other research led me to KYB. For a strut and a strut assembly, quality, to me, matters. And my mechanic is charging me less in labor costs to install the full assembly so it offsets the increased cost for the full assembly part. My mechanic also encourages all of his customers to install a complete strut assembly.

Not only Honda but my dad as well are advising I get ahold of front shock struts for my Honda Civic cause when goin over humps the car bounces and goin over small bumps you can feel the bumps due to all that vibration felt. It also sounds like something broke if you go over rough spots on the road but I check and nothing did its just the struts but ya know its an old used vehicle so I wouldn't be surprised about the struts. Idk if I should just live with the current ones just be careful on the road or do get new struts

@@imanwan2861 I think some of these manufacturers try to make fewer parts fit more applications. They'll sell the same strut for the 4 cylinder car with a stick as they do the 6 cylinder car with the automatic. Also quality control is no prize at KYB, I put some shocks on the front of my Town Car and my front end was moving through the air like it was on the high seas.

@@kccodex8931 I think KYB come with different level for the same shock. KYB does a lot of Japanese OEM shock. Town Car supposed to be soft and give u comfortable ride.

This was a much easier job on my Sunfire. Also, Scotty previously posted a vid stating to never use cheaper aftermarket quick struts. Either use OEM or KYB. KYB makes the highest quality quick struts.

Massachusetts only way to get those quick struts is order them from Rock Auto the auto parts store doesn't carry them anymore for some reason but I personally have installed them in every car that needed them but they work great and never had issues 👍

The advice on oil replacement vs engine rebuild is the best advice. If it uses only one quart per oil change the break even, if the rebuild was only $500(which is a VERY low estimate, since you'd need a ride/rental as well while the car is in the shop), would be 800,000 miles when oil is only about $5/quart. Just put the oil in and keep driving. Increasing change frequency from every 8,000 to every 5,000 might keep other parts from wearing as rapidly even with the consumption. 😎

An extra piece of advice! Those bottom bolts can be pretty hard to get out, especially if they've got decent miles on them or the vehicle has been in a state that salts in the winter. Spraying them down with some penetrating oil and tapping the bottom of the strut housing with a dead blow hammer can save you a ton of aggravation. I changed the entire suspension on my 2013 Nissan Quest about 6 months ago because the driver's side strut was blown out (accidentally got bottomed out into a ditch) and even with under 100k miles and not a spec of rust there was enough oxidization on the inner collar of the bolts that I had to let them sit with some PB blaster for half an hour to get them out, even with an impact.
@PsychoCPU
@PsychoCPU 3 жыл бұрын
@Mark Codiroli Yes, I was talking about corrosion that occurs behind the head of the bolt where it seats against the mount on the hub. You can get the nut off the bolt but the bolt itself can stay stuck in the strut due to this corrosion. It can seep inside the barrel of the bolt housing in the strut and make it incredibly hard to get out.

Been replacing suspension parts on my 97 civic ex. The front, a piece of cake, no overly stubborn bolts or rust to worry about; easily removable with hand tools(breaker bar used of course). The rear on the otherhand.. well let's just say I need to invest in some air tools; even with mapp gas and excessive PB I can only only get 1 bolt to move so far.
