This is very iteresting because I enjoyed The World We Make a bit more than The City We Became. I really liked getting to know the characters more and meet new cities in the second book!

I loved both these books! (though I love cities and I think that's key) I loved that detail about Istanbul loving cats, I've visited there and the cats there definitely hold pride of place and 100% know it. 😂 Cats will just join you if you're eating outside and you have to guard your plate so your food isn't stolen right out from under your nose! (Not that they're starving, there are bowls of food left out for them all over, they just think that your meal looks pretty good and they might just help themselves to that too)

Kedi is the most lovely documentary and as someone who has also been to Turkey…can confirm 😂

I just read The City We Became and i mostly enjoyed it, but I felt like the little avatar switcheroo at the end and nobody actually getting eaten was a little too convenient. I enjoyed the hell out of broken earth. No notes there! Everyone SHOULD. Some notes here. Having a real life relationship with NYC (one time NY-er with a WWII NYC immigrant story family history) probably helped me to be able to enjoy the NYC specificity more. The convenient avatar switcheroo dealie, as noted above. Ending felt like it betrayed the high stakes of the whole a bit.

Anthropologic. But yeah, retaining your human shape while you're reading is also very nice. :D

I love these types of videos, they are soooo helpful!! I still don't know exactly how I feel about my reading experience of Broken Earth, so I am kinda curious to see how I vibe with Jemisin's other works. This whole concept just sounds so fascinating and hearing you gush about the characterwork definitely piques my interest, because we tend to like the same character types ;) Great video, thank you so much for making this!! 🥰

Thank you for such a thorough review! This book seems to be so decisive…I’ve been on the fence about starting. This totally swayed me 🙂

I did really enjoy the prologue when it was a short story, and I remember it almost being a bit jarring bc of the differences between the two.

Thank you for this video! NK Jemisin's books are always a masterclass-I loved The City We Became and am definitely looking forward to The World We Make when I get around to it. (Also, I just watched your video on The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina and saw you mentioned your family is from Venezuela; love from a Venezuelan who just subscribed!

🌃 I love these ‘should you read’ videos you do. You convinced me to read Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy last year. I hope to read The City We Became sometime next year (🤞🏼). So many books, so little time, ya know 🤷🏻‍♀️

🌃 I love NYC! We got married there in fact. Thanks for the heads up about the long chapters😂😂 I’ll know to be prepared for that and make it my nighttime read.

I read the first one when it came out and I really enjoyed it, but I didn't love it. I think because it didn't draw me in as much as the Broken Earth in terms of world building. I'm also not into cities - I'm more of a desert or mountains or ocean kind of person. I avoid cities when I travel (there are exceptions - I loved Dublin). I will check out the second one at some point!

I’ll be picking up The World We Make in December 🎉 also, since you didn’t know Istanbul loves cats, you should check out the documentary Kedi (last I checked it was free on KZfaq), who can pretty much just follows the street cats of Istanbul around. Delightful 🐈

i always love your "should you read" series, they're so useful! the eldritch aspect has me intrigued and i also like the feel of a more scifi-leaning story. probably going to try this after i finish broken earth 🌇🌃🏙

i am in the midst of finals and decided to reread the series even though i just read both of them in october because i deserve happiness! the city we became is my favorite jemisin and has been since i read it in 2020. ugh it’s just so so good. i really need to get to dreamblood but also it’s my last jemisin books left so i don’t want to 😭

i was just wondering this!! the broken earth series is immaculate, but i dnf'd the inheritance trilogy in the middle of the second book, so i was conflicted about reading the city we became. might skip it for now 😅

I still need to read the 2nd book, but YES, the answer is YES! I absolutely loved the first book! It may not be for everyone but it is for ME lol and 9 times out of ten I know if it is for you, it will be for me too lol

As much as I adore NK Jemisin, the city we became was not for me. I do think its was successful in what it aimed to do, she truly is talented. I just found that she is too much of a fantastical writer for an urban fantasy. I'm saddened to hear that lovers of the series will only get 2 books instead of 3, but I am excited that I will get something new from her.

I read the short story and HATED it (almost made me put down her entire collection) so I wrote off this series for myself, but if the novels are very different…idk idk

I couldn't get into ''the cities we became' at all. The conceit of anthropomorphic cities seems beyond silly to me. I prefer hard SF I suppose, and was led astray by Jemisin's Hugo's.

I loathed The City We Became. Needless to say, I won't be reading the sequel. And I loved The Dreamblood Duology and The Broken Earth trilogy. I actually consider Broken Earth one of the best series I have ever read.
