I really really hope you end up liking the writing style. Although since you enjoyed Sorrowland I am pretty hopeful since I feel Solomon and Jemisin have adjacent writing styles, if that makes sense.

The Fifth Season was a 3 star read for me. I thought the world building and themes were rich, but I never became really invested in the characters or story. I enjoyed hearing your perspective though, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I love how much you love The Broken Earth trilogy (and Jemisin in general). I have only read this trilogy by her and while it wasn't my favourite reading experience, I am still quite intrigued to try out her other works! Maybe I will even reread this one someday, because I think I also wasn't really ready for this story at the time that I read it (I was busy and back then I read mostly YA fantasy). Anyway, thank you for sharing this, I always appreciate these type of 'should you read' videos, they are so helpful! 🌏☺❤

This has been on my radar for quite a while and I really think I will like it. The magic system might be a little bit too scientific to my liking but it sounds interesting and I just love an emotional read from time to time. The second person POV might be a little bit weird in the beginning but I don't think it will be an issue for me.

i quite liked the second person parts too. i found that binge reading the series worked best because it did take a while to get into her writing style, if id left a gap between each then i would have to readjust to it each time. 🌎

Im about to start the Fifth Season and I'm soooo excited! It sounds right up my alley!!! I was left wondering which nice editions you referred to because the pictures I found looked very disappointing. I kinda love the artstyle of the paperbacks you have , so I had imagined a gorgeously decorated, intricate edition but I saw a black and white face on a leatherback. Did I find the wrong set?
@LiteratureScienceAlliance
@LiteratureScienceAlliance 2 жыл бұрын
No those are it, I just really like the art and that they are hardbacks. Besides that there was a limiting printing of the paperback covers on hardback but otherwise its just paperbacks and I really wish I had any quality editions I could collect for this amazing series. Maybe for a 10th anniversary edition or something I will get lucky.

I'm on the last couple of chapters of book 2. Probably going to finish it either later today or tomorrow lol I don't see it becoming an all time favorite of mine (unless of course book 3 absolutely blows me away lmao) but I am glad I finally got around to this series. Worth reading as there is a lot of good themes to discuss and the magic system is simply awesome One of the things that keep this from being a favorite for me so far is the second person lol That will never not pull me out of the story lol because every time the book tells me "you did this thing" my brain rebels automatically with "no tf I didn't" XD I know the second person is a choice the author made and that its supposed to have pay off, but my brain has been fighting it every step of the way which makes the story less immersive than I feel it would be were I able to ignore it. Also, despite how well written as the characters are, so far almost at the end of book 2 I have not latched on to any of them. The characters go through hard experiences and that makes them hard people. Makes sense and all, but me feeling sorry for someone and me liking them are not the same thing lol Basically, so far their is no character in these books that I could see myself willingly being friends with or just sitting down for a casual conversation from time to time (yes, that includes the child characters lol those little bastards are scarier than the adults half the time lmao). If I met any of these characters in real life, I would only interact with them if the circumstance forced me to lol I can appreciate how well written they are, but that is only from a detached, impersonal standpoint At 6:45 I would also like to say that I can sort of understand what people mean when they say the author's style is tedious (although this is not an opinion I myself hold, at least not firmly). It can be demonstrated with just the opening lines of the prologue of book 1 of this series - "Let's start with the end of the world, why don't we? Get it over with and move on to more interesting things." - The important words here are "star with" and then "get over with" and then "move on to". This will not apply to everyone based on life experience, but to some people, these key words in the sentence sound like teacher giving you a instructions or parents giving you chores. It feels as is the narrator and by extension the author is speaking for a place of authority (well duh XD author-authority) and the reading experience is being reduced done to a list of bullet points rather than an actually narrative (and directly addressing "we" and "you" only makes matters worse here) I think it is important to give a contrast here. Think about a different series: Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. I'm using Malazan specifically because it is also arguably "tedious" lol but in much different way meaning that subjective experience and interpretation will differ. That series basically starts in medias res and for the most part, the narrator just tells what is happening. The narrator doesn't speak with any more authority beyond a clinical description of events. Depending on who you are, that will result in a more cinematic experience as if you are sitting in front of the TV being a couch potato all day lol. The author in MBotF doesn't sound as if they are giving you a "to do" list lol. Again though, this all depends on who you are and your personal experience. This was just my attempt to try to rationalize and understand why some people would feel the way they do about N. K. Jemisin's writing style. Oh, and I finally figured out why Robin Miles' voice bothers me so much: she sounds like a teacher (a very TEDIOUS one I might add lmfao) I once had lol I finally remembered after reminiscing with old friends from back in the day XD Anyway, this is definitely a series that I will encourage other people to read since again there is a lot of great discussion to be had here and all of my issues with it are issues that I know will absolutely not affect everyone to the same degree lol

I loved reading all of this and will be unable to give a well thought out reply cause but I think its funny/cool how for some people 2nd person pulls them out and for other people it brings them closer, I am in the later group and it makes me feel even more immersed and like I am part of the story and not just watching it. Man I love that first sentence... I think its one of my favorite first lines of all time, it got me so pumped to read it but again I do like that you brought up how some people could take that as being lectured to. I personally hate lectures but didn't get that impression. I felt like I was more being told a story around a camp fire. Again thanks so much for sharing, it was really cool reading about your experience and the connections you made with why things did or didn't work for you!

I had no issue with it being in 2nd person. This was a series where I didn't care for the main character but loved everyone else. I like how she doesn't beat you over the head with her themes. just took a glance at the subterranean editions and they are beautiful 😍
