Warranty requires records of maintenance. If you do it yourself, write the date and the engine hours on the part receipt when you actually install it. That is considered proof of work performed.

Thanks mate... Another great discussion and clarification of warranties that I wasn't sure about. I've always serviced my outboards myself because I'm hundreds of miles away from any accredited agents and you really don't need to be intimidated by your outboard. I learned all the specifics of outboards on channels like yours. Once again, thanks.

Doing a service on a verado is pretty easy. I did mine for the first time this year. And im not mechanically minded. The problem can be , if your not experienced, you can miss some of the signs of other parts that may bo on there way out. This happened to me as 20 hrs after my service my drive belt blew due to alternator pully shitting a bearing. So from now on id rather pay the extra and have the peace of mind personally. Good luck tho

I had my boat service by the dealer while under warranty, 1998 Bayliner 19' bowrider. Expensive oil changes! After that, I did routine service myself: it's just nuts and bolts. I had a shop repair my trim cylinders. But discovered I could even change the intake/exhaust manifold and riser of the 4 cylinder MerCruiser myself. Thousands of salt water hours, USCG Auxiliary ops, and 22 years: great boat.

Every time I bought a car, I bought a factory service manual. I'm 57 and since I was 16 I've done 100% of my vehicle's maintenance, with the sole exception of changing a clutch that began slipping days before shipping the vehicle overseas. I didn't have the time, and didn't want it to fail upon arrive, so I ponied up the $900. In hindsight, I should have replaced it at 100k miles, even though the manual didn't call for it. In high school, my Dad and I rebuilt our 100 HP Evinrude, taking it apart to each and every nut and bolt before having the cylinders re-sleeved. After we honed them, we replaced bearings, seals and other moving parts as we reassembled it. Then, we sold our boat for more than we paid for it. The point is, I've always used the manufacturer's Service Manuals and followed them to a "T," including buying the proper tools for the job. In so doing, I've prevented many things from going wrong as experienced by other owners, and I've saved tens of thousands in repair bills. Any manufacturer requiring "An authorised Tohatsu Service Centre must perform the recommended routine servicing/maintenance and repairs..." is a HUGE RED FLAG to avoid Tohatsu, SRB, and similar SCAMS like the plague.

I do all the work on my boat myself. Reason for this is all the “marine technicians” that I’ve allowed to work on my engine have lied about their work. For example, “Mechanic - I’ve done the standard water pump and oil change” so I pull the lower unit off and guess what, the factory water pump is still there, impeller not changed and the gear case oil wasn’t changed. They want $400+ Australian dollars for this Non-Service. Most marine mechanics where I live are dodgy, expensive shops that just don’t do the quality of work they are trying to charge for.

Hey Paul, thank you! Glad to hear you're getting into Boating! Absolutely, the academy is geared towards both, first time boaters and experienced. It's set up so you can start wherever you'd like. There are courses that teach the complete basics like where to find information and taking the fear out of working on your own boat. It's also geared more towards the boat and not so much engine. Like electrical, electronics, pumps, lights, and pretty much everything in the boat. We are working on adding engine stuff now and there's an app I'm hoping to have live for the courses on your phone in the next week or so. Thanks again for reaching out!

That’s awesome! Truly learning a lot from watching your channel and feel is time to get serious about learning everything about my own boat. Thank you and happy 4th

I fiber glassed in a new floor, re-painted (roll&tip), did my own wiring, seats, sea deck, and even installed a wakeboard tower. Painted the inside, installed bolsters, had to build new bow seats from scratch and find cushions. I completely rigged my own engine. (merc 150 proXS) and said no thanks to messin with gages so I run a vessel view and WP gage. Installed a 32 gal alumn gas tank from a center console. Re-foamed the boat. Got it sitting on a seadoo galvanized trailer. (rear heavy need to get a new one) Basically everything bought off amazon and 1 local marine store. All in my front yard in Largo Florida. With my girlfriend. Its our first boat. Already took it offshore many times. Goes 60mph DIY or die 1984 18ft Checkmate Eluder @jayvon_ro on insta if you wanna check it out

We had our local "professional" workshop service our 130hp Honda's for over 10 years. When they couldn't do the annual service for us, a mate gave us a hand to do it ourselves. Turns out the "pros" hadn't been doing what they were supposed to! DIY from now on!

When you hire a dealer.... sure they SHOULD have more experience, however how much experience does the person actually working on your motor really have (is it the new guy)? Typically the owner of the shop sometimes has the most experience and is not the person that ends up working on your motor. How much does the person working on your motor care... I mean it is not their motor. Maybe they hate their job or just not paid enough... why do they care? That is why I like to do my own work, even if it means a learning curve is involved, I will know more about my motor in the end. With that said, you also have to know when you are in over your head and the shop is the best route, even if they are 6 weeks out.

I manly only ever take boats/cars to a shop if it needs specialised tools that cost heaps and may only ever use it once for that job or dont understand eg ecu faults etc but most service work is basic and workshop books help

My question is always "Can you trust the service engineer" . Unless you've known the person for a long time and even then when thier business expands they no longer work on your engines themselves but pass it on to an employee that you don't know. The less you know the less you can trust them. By doing it myself is the only way I can be sure it was done. Any one can charge you for new plugs and not actually changing them. Who will check if a VST filter was really opened as you asked and as per the invoice says? And by the way I can say after having purchased many older engines that including the ones yearly serviced by pros none had ever got their engine body anodes replaced which to me is a big deal. Are yo going to re-open the gear case drain to check if you really have new oil in there? There has to be some good ones out there but having been close to this business I just don't trust anyone. Same goes if you give your boat at the end of the season for winterizing and storage, I know a lot of boats only gets serviced when you need it back the next season so in fact your boat was stored with sea water in the engine block.
