When 99% of spectacle lenses are made of plastic, would you buck the trend and go with old fashioned glass? Here's why you should!

They are from 1995, so a couple of years older. I have been using them for birdwatching since 2005. They are superb. Not sure if modern equivalents from Zeiss/Leica/Swaro have improved optics, they likely do. Never felt the need to compare, though. Or upgrade, for that matter.

timeremember, everyone used glass lenses forever for a long time. Plastic/Poly is alll pretty new. Sports, Dr's, Drivers, Racers, etc all used glass for decades. I was hit on a bicycle with mineral glass lenses on and hit my face straight on the ground. One lens shattered. They are normally 'shatterproof' glass so they do not splinter but break into 'chunks' instead as mine did. I had no harm done. ;-) To this day I seek out Glass as nothing can compare to that clarity. Not even close. ;-)

Really cool seeing those outdoor shots in the Lake District. That Anglo American frame from the film looked cool. I guess for those with an iscription and who want the best vision possible, Zeiss glass is the way to do it! Really interesting video 👍

Thanks so much for your video. I am currently looking for glass lenses, and they are getting extremely difficult to find. The opticians that do carry them tell me glass is extremely dangerous and they highly recommend against it. Is there any truth to the dangerous claim for every day wear? I could see not for sports as you mentioned but for normal use?

Paying a premium for a plastic lens every two years or keeping your glass for a lifetime and just changing frames. fitting and grinding glass isn't a challenge for a new styled frame or ordering new lenses for new frame keeping original as second pair . Wore glass 50 years wore plastic 6 months ! the safety of shattered glass issue isn't a issue plastic lenses cause more impairment to vision while driving with all the scratches and never getting them clean enough especially for any night driving. 1000% mark up on frames and plastic lenses for me returning to glass is a wiser investment

Frankly (after hearing what you said about i.Scription) if you were in Italy, even in the part of Italy farthest from mine, I'd have come to your shop to have my vision measured, and my eye-glasses set. Are the DuraVision Platinum & the anti-blue-light treatment undoable on glass lenses? You didn't talk specifically of those 2.

Interesting... I'm a surgical trainee with -11 Rx. I've gone for Zeiss Individual 1.74. Might have to look at glass at some point! How does the AR coating compare?
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory 2 жыл бұрын
The AR usually adheres better because the hardcoat on plastic lenses is acutally silicone dioxide (glass) which means it doesn't match perfectly to the substrate. This is why coatings on plastic lenses are more prone to delamination, especially when exposed to temperature changes as they expand at different rates. However, a glass AR is harder to clean and more prone to fogging...

Hello and thanks for this very good video. I have been considering to get a glass lens for my next glasses, but i dont know what kind of coatings or technologies can be applied to a glass. I read things like umbramatic and some more, but really there is no info about what they are and uses. If its too much to answer here i would love to contact you some way. And I definitely want a zeiss lenses. Thank you.
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory Жыл бұрын
Umbramatic means light sensitive, so gets darker when exposed to bright light. You can also get tinted glass lenses (either 20% slightly tinted or full sun) and a gold coloured coating which I think looks really premium on glass lenses. Email me via rob@thespectaclefactory.com for more info!

Could glass lenses work in conjunction with my clip-ons? Would they offer better clarity and less reflections? I find my DriveSafe work well with my clip-ons, but I do occasionally notice some reflections? Thanks Rob👍

Yes, if all you want is the crispest, clearest vision (for example, I tend to wear mine when watching a movie, especially at the cinema) then glass is your best bet. And we can make SmartLife lenses in glass too. They would work well with an Anglo frame. You don't want to go too big due to the weight. I also have a feeling this would be a great match (and very cool): bartonperreira.com/collections/barton-perreira-x-fear-of-god2021/products/fgbp2021-50?variant=39428847534178

Is a glass lens roughly double the weight of a plastic one? Is the prescription you talk about at the end (eyescription) what’s known as “freeform”? And does the abbe value drop with a high index glass lens at high prescription (I’m about a -6)? Thank you for the video
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory Жыл бұрын
About 4 times the weight. The abbe value does drop, but high index glass is still optically excellent.

Do you think a pair of lenses can be made really really thin like a piece of paper
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory 2 жыл бұрын
No only because of the safety element. The materials used in optical lenses would be too brittle to be mounted into a frame and could crack and go in your eye if they were made that thin! BUT we can make them 1-2mm thin in most prescriptions
@williamwest5079
@williamwest5079 2 жыл бұрын

7:51 IT’S NOT A COOL NEW TECHNOLOGY IT’S SO OD YOU NEED NEW GLASSES EVERY DAY IN NEWBIE GAINS AND THEY PROBABLY COST HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS Yeah nah -0.25 is small enough. Some people even reduce by -0.5 but -0.25 is easier like NottNott said Idk it depends but -0.01 is way too small of an increment it’s literally 100 meters away 8:09 And that bus there is probably 2 meters, so -0.5. That’s literally a horrible example
