Great I catch myself saying “let’s do it and let’s do it now” all the time! I can’t hit lower than 20 lofted hybrids far at all. So I carry the 5 wood you convinced me to buy from your other video. That thing is a MONSTER and my new favorite club.

I hit my 5, just as long as my driver. I believe it's because it is somewhat shorter than my driver. More control, and I just wack the shit out of it

I carry both a 5 wood and 3 hybrid. I usually switch depending on the course. On long par 3's I prefer the 5 wood. On long approach shots it's the 3 hybrid.

Hybrid is the happy medium for me between a driving iron and 5wood. Hits the right height window and and goes the right distance as well is much more consistent than the other two options. First year having one in the bag and I love it. Use it all over the course and confident everytime it comes out of the bag.

I recently got rid of my 3 and 4 hybrids. I replaced them with a 5 wood and a 7 wood. The main reason is because I would get an errant shot from my hybrids when I really wasn't expecting it. After getting the 5 and 7 woods those errant shots just don't happen. I did get the Callaway Flash 5 and 7 wood. And I did have Callaway Steelhead hybrids. The extra distance from the 5 and 7 wood is welcomed as well. Where I play there isn't a lot of thick ruff. A hybrid is better than other clubs out of thick ruff.

I took out my 5 wood and replaced it with a 3 hybrid. I also replaced my 4 iron with a 4 hybrid. As a 14 handicapper I get a more consistent strike, I use my 3 wood much less off the fairway. keep the ball in play more whilst sacrificing those occasional dream shots.

As always, great info and analysis. I actually have a 5 wood and a 3 hybrid in the bag and use them for different shots altogether. The 5 wood is for fairway shots and long par 3's. The 3 hybrid is for rough and shots that need to stay low with distance, like under tree branches and off the fairway from bad tee shots.

I went to a 19 degree hybrid several years ago and was happy with the resluts. Have seen similar videos recently comparing the hybrid to the 5 wood and decided to put the 5 wood back in the bag. Pleased with the change. It feels easier to hit, especially when I need just a bit more distance. With the hybrid, when I try to jump on it a bit I tend to hook, not so with the 5 wood.

I went from double hcp to single hcp 10 years ago when I dumped 3-5 irons for hybrids. Easiest clubs to hit. High and straight. But I also play a 5 wood instead of a 2 hybrid. It all works for me. Hitting long irons are a young man's game!

Great comparison. I think the only thing missing was comparing the descent angle. Tour pros use the 5 wood because the height and and descent allows them to access and hold areas of firm greens. Also, gapping has to come into play. sometimes the hybrid is just too low and doesn't spin enough and doesn't separate enough particularly if someone also uses a 4 hybrid. Would love to see you hit your longest iron and 3 wood first then fill in one of the two.

I’m just old enough to have played competitive golf before there were hybrids. I loved them at the time and have gone back to it from time to time ever since. That said, there is no question that from a standpoint of versatility and possibly even forgiveness, the hybrid is hard to beat! I’ve had at least one hybrid in my bag for years ....and at times more. Currently, I have one hybrid in my bag, a Titleist 818h2 in 19* which is sandwiched between my 3wd and my 4i T-MB. It would hard for me to give up the ability to muscle out a hybrid from deep rough or, for that matter, a bad lie for the sake of a 5wd. Great video James! Very informative. It’s nice to have my own prejudices confirmed from time to time! 😀😀

Great review James! Would have really enjoyed if you took those two out on the course and actually try them out of the rough. Anyways I agree that it‘s much easier to hit a Hybrid out of the rough. Glides much better. The thing is that the courses I play at the greens are in good shape, but really soft. Therefore it doesn’t really make a difference whether spin and descend angle is a little lower and flatter with the hybrid. I would think this is the case for most golf courses. The places the likes of Rory plays at, greens are just superfirm. That‘s why they play 5 woods to get that extra spin and higher apex. Also worth mentioning here is that pros that carry 5 woods often switch it in favor of a utility irons once they play links, softer greens or wind is a bigger factor. Most amateur golfers don‘t do that. Therefore I still believe to the very most golfers hybrids are by far the best fit. And while many argue that pros don‘t use hybrids I can only partially agree to that. If you look at the pros on Tours with lower club head speeds you will figure, that a lot of them are actually playing hybrids. Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson to mention two of them. Only maybe 3-4% of male golfers have faster swing speeds compared to them. anyways. Can‘t be too wrong using hybrids then...

I replaced the 5 wood this year with a 19 degree hybrid. The 5 wood would turn into a very high weak slice sometimes. I took the 4 and 5 iron out the bag as well and added a 22 degree H4 and a 25 degree H5. They are so easy to hit.

I have recently taking a new approach. I have used a driver, 3 wood, 5 wood and 3,4 and 5 hybrid. I am a 12 handicap and am 65 years old. Switching to Driver, 13.5 degree 3 wood, 16 degree 4 wood, 3 hybrid at 18 degrees, 4, 5, hybrid. Closing the gap between clubs and allowing me to play longer holes better. If it continues, I will be happier and lowering my handicap.

I use both, and also have a driving iron. Epic flash 5wood, sub 70 4 hybrid, sub 70 5 hybrid, sub 70 3 utility iron. Plus a 5 iron. Took out my 60 as I have a low bounce 56 that can be opened up for extra space at the top of my bag. I've found having more ball flight options from 200-240 had really helped lower my scores and gives me way more confidence on long par 3s and reachable in two par 5s.

I play the Rogue 3 wood and hybrid and absolutely love them... Don't get to use them a ton but love them regardless... This was a very interesting video as I used to have a 5 wood in my bag but decided to work in another wedge for gapping and the 5 wood wasn't even getting used... That said I never put much thought into the difference between the 5 wood and 3 hybrid... My hybrid is so easy for me to hit I couldn't imagine using a 5 wood instead. I've considered going to hybrids for the 4 and 5 irons as well as I hit my hybrid so well... Great video James!

I'm so inconsistent with hybrids (all-world or all-hacker) that I don't carry them anymore. Instead, I carry an original Callaway Steelhead 7w that I bought for $10 at Play It Again Sports. The head is probably a little smaller than some of today's hybrids and it has 20* loft--so basically a 3-hybrid that's easier to hit. So I carry driver, 4w, 7w, single length 5i through GW, Cally MD 50*, 54*, 58*, and putter. Covers all the distances I should ever realistically attempt with my slower swing speed.

Now I set the 3H to 17 degrees and average 230 to 240 (260 when pured) so it replaces a 5 wood but close enough to 3 wood distance. Gives me the opportunity to add an addition wedge in the bag as I have 5 - PW.

In a nutshell, fairway woods off the fairway & hybrids out of the rough. To my simple logic, it’s all in the names - I mean FAIRWAY woods is a self-explanatory name and weren’t hybrids originally called rescue clubs (i.e. to get out of trouble) ? I don’t worry to much about similar lofts if the respective clubs are used for these differing purposes.

Have to admit that I gave up on both 3 woods & 5 woods years ago as the longer shafts (42" - 43") just seemed too cumbersome for me. I am currently playing an Epic Flash 3H set at 17* loft and an Epic Flash 4H set at 20* loft (both are 41" long), before transitioning into my 4 iron at 22*. loft. The 3H is my 3-wood replacement for second shots into par 5's, and although I sacrifice some distance, I'm usually in the fairway. My 4H is my 3-iron replacement and is used for long par 3's (200'ish yards). Thanks for the informative videos - I enjoy them a lot!

I love my 5 wood from the fairway but I’m a (very) average golfer which means I also hit from the rough plenty and my 5 wood is terrible when the ground is not manicured. Recently purchased a G410 5 wood (currently set at 16.5). Goes about the same as my Mizuno 19 degree hybrid. Even the good shots with the 5 wood....just don't seem to travel as far.....and it should. I also have another Mizuno hybrid set at 15 degrees. I get more distance with the lower hybrid than with the 5 wood. My plan is if the ball is rolling out at all....go with the hybrid. Winter time I'll probably drop the low hybrid and hit the 5 wood more when the ground softens up.

This is a question I've been asking myself lately. I play a 5-wood (~215 yd club), and I love it... but not out of the rough. My 4 iron is also not reliable from thick grass. So, if I mishit my tee shot on a long par 4 or par 5, I normally have to lay up w a 6 or 7 Iron. Not ideal. I may have to consider replacing the 4 iron (~205 yd club), with a Hybrid, but I don't think it'll replace the 5-wood. Love the content James and appreciate all the work I'm sure it takes to put out daily videos.

5 wood all day and twice on Sundays. Much easier to hit properly. Hybrids are just that, hybrid; you still have to swing and hit almost like using an iron, just a little easier. I carry a 5 wood, a 9 wood (5iron), and an 11 wood(6 iron)....followed by a women's Callaway Mavrik Max 36 degree hybrid that gives me a 180 yard (8 iron)....two wedges and a driver and putter, nothing more. Simplicity. I'll take the "Just clip the grass under the ball" wood off the deck shoot any day over the hundred different ways you can screw up an iron shot.

I carry both, 5W lofted at 17 degrees (so a 4W) and a 3H at 19 degree. A 4W or at least a wood lofted at 16.5-17.5 degrees is a great compromise - solid off the tee, consistently 225-230 yards and a nicely high launching, soft landing 220 yards off the fairway. My 3H is a little shorter: 220 yards off tee is my maximum ball flight is lower and more penetrating. I have dropped the 3W from the bag as a consequence

Now I got a full NEW set 3irons-PW, so now with my wedges 52, 56 and 60 I plan to play irons 3-PW irons. Will need to decide if I want to swap out a wood with a hybrid or just stay the course with woods. Think woods at start since I have played them well and hybrids were originally just to replace long irons I want to now play with my new set. Eh, at least I have a lot of options now. 😂

Taylormade Rescue, 1998. I still have my 18*. The headcover disintegrated, and the local store only takes woods/hybrid clubs for trade-in if you still have the headcover. 😂 I think the 5 Wood has left many people's bags because we've all bee told that hybrids are easier to hit, with their shorter shaft, while the wood may travel further if you hit it *correctly* With improvements in club head technology, making the larger heads more forgiving, fairway woods may be ready for a comeback.

Here is my experience: - if you don't have the club head speed to hit a hybrid to a 120ft apex, and you need a club in that distance for gapping, 5 wood all day long - most people find shorter shafted clubs more consistent to hit - if you really struggle with consistency, hybrid every time - some modern hybrids are less easy to turn draw than older models - that being the case, don't be afraid to choose the upright Draw shaft setting to set the club up to draw 'naturally' as it is always easier to fade a shot when you need it - if your reason / your home course where you will use the long 18 degree hybrid or 5 wood has a substantial carry involved in the holes you will play this shot, then 5 wood for sure as the deeper CG and larger head means you will more often get the full carry that you are looking for

I play a ping g410 2 hybrid set at 17 degrees and hit it more accurately than my fairway woods. And since my average drive is 320 total distance I can get buy with no fairway woods and a extra wedge. Its helped me tremendously

I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum. Pretty new to golf but I have an easier time with a driving iron than a hybrid or fairway wood.

Hybrid for me. My problem is I struggle with fairway woods, it took me years to find a 3-Wood that I could use off the deck (an old Adams Speedline that was one of the first clubs with a Velocity channel, or Speed slot as TM now call them). But I have never found a 5-Wood that I could use with any consistency, (the combination of a long shaft & small head is a nightmare scenario for me). So I now game an 18deg & 22deg hybrid (0317 GEN2) with the face set slightly open that give me the distance and ball flight that I need on my home course.

Love my 5 wood, it’s a great fairway finder for me and is a great option of the fairway or even the rough. I have a 3 wood as well but don’t hit it as high so it’s great of the tee or trying to run one up to a green that’s 240 out

It;s a problem gap for me. Between 3-wood and 3-iron. Choices are 5-wood, 2-hybrid, 2-iron. Pro's and con's with each. Hybrid miss was a huge hook so I switched to the 2-iron and I'm using it less and less as time goes on....

Excellent video. I carry a 5 wood at 19 degrees. I carry 22 and 25 degree hybrids, they are great. Every 17, 18, 19 degree hybrid I have tried cannot hold a candle to the 5 wood.

I have recently changed the upper end of my bag by relinquishing my 3 wood and 5 wood, adding the Cleveland Launcher Halo 16 degree and 19 degree hybrids. These hybrids are very easy to hit and the distances are slightly longer than my 3 wood and 5 wood. Note that my 3 wood is 17 degree.

I use a 3 wood, then 3 and 4 hybrids. I do have a 5 wood but prefer the 3 hybrid, choosing to give up a few yards on my second shots on par 5s and long par 4s which is what I tend to use them for as a poor shot with the 5 wood tends to be a high slice which is more destructive than a poor shot with the hybrid.

I had a 5 wood in the bag and hit it really well. I now have a 4 Hybrid, and hit it really well also. But I think the end result is that the Hybrid is easier to hit for me. I typically hit the 5 wood around 175 yds.......... I hit the 4 Hybrid 160-170yds. I will gladly give up the few yards for the easier swing. The 4 Hybrid is 1/2" shorter........... yeah I know..........big deal. But...........it works.

I play both. 19* 5 wood and a 24* hybrid to replace my 22* 4i. Sometimes throw in a 7w if I need something between the 5w and 24*h. As an amateur I rarely find any holes requiring a ball shorter than a driver but longer than a 5 wood. I'm never faced with a forced 3 wood carry, and even if I am, why would I ever play it? I'm on the longer side in terms of distance for a mid handicap, and when do I or you ever play a course longer than 7,000 yards? Basically never. Leave the 245yd 3 wood shots for the professionals, I'd pull one off on the line I need maybe one every 5 attempts. Scorecard killers.

Anyone with a fairway wood club head speed of less than 85 mph should me using a 3 wood. 3 or 4 more degrees of loft will carry just as long or longer ad be more accurate due to spin and shaft length. I swing my fairway wood 77 to 80 mph. In 2018 I bought a Cobra F7 3 wood Lite Flex, set at 16 degrees. I hit a lot of low fades of about 130 yards. The goof ones were flying about 150. Run out varied. Near the end of the season, I went back to the store where they have a "If it's not right for you, we'll make it right" policy. I trades the 3 wood for a 5 wood same specs. I left it on the default setting of 185 degrees. I immediately picked up 16 yards of much straighter golf. That club isn't going out of my bag any time soon. I feel the same about hybrids,. No one with a swing speed of less than 80 mph should be trying to hit a hybrid of less than 20 degrees off the turf Thanks

I currently only have a hybrid between my irons and driver. A lot of that is because I don't have a good set of woods. But ideally I would like to have both of them. The 5 wood would have better distance but the hybrid has better dispersion

I rather the long iron. It may be psychological but I tend to favour irons overs woods and hybrids. Subconsciously it's in my head to use the long irons and hit em well when i am having a really off round of golf.

Ironically before I watched this I was debating whether to continue to use my 17 degree 5W. I have 21 degree hybrid. I was finding the hybrid was going the same distance, but with better accuracy. After watching this, I've decide to pull out the 5W. Who says you got to carry 14 clubs? Use what works and makes you confident in hitting the shot. Thanks.

Great Video, it's a question that i've struggled with for this last year. Started with a 3 wood, 17 & 22 deg hyb hitting them really well at the start of the season, then went for a lesson to improve my iron striking and after practising the new movements couldn't hit the hybrids at all. Therefore switched in a 5 wood which seemed to work but only for a couple of rounds. Now I cant hit that and have went back to the two hybrids. With this in mind I have kept all the clubs in the bag and before my rounds now I hit a few shots to see how i'm feeling and which set up to take for the course i'm playing. If its thick rough I use the two hybrids, if its thinnish rough and more links I use the 5 wood as I can use it of the tees on the shorter par 4 to get a lot more roll than my hybrid as I hit a lower ball flight with the wood.

I just bought a used Ping K15 5 wood with regular shaft. I found that I can hit is about 220-230 max, but I can hit it as high as a dang pitching wedge, even off the turf. Still getting used to it, but I'm hitting a high draw, so I like that. I've been struggling with the driver lately, so tomorrow, I'm leaving it home. Hopefully I'll hit a few more fairways and have more fun. I never was able to hit a 3 wood, but I might have to find a good modern used one. LOL

I recently went back to Callaway Xhot hybrids after trying the latest greatest - that 4 hybrid Xhot became one of the best clubs in my bag (including a hole out from 185) and I consistently hit it well. I have the 3h and 5h, also, which are also excellent, but I had that 4h specially shafted, while the other 2 have manufacturer shafts. Instead of buying a new hybrid, I'm going to sell my most recent hybrids and buy new shafts for the 3h and 5h Xhots. It's crazy, right? But these clubs inspire confidence. The ball flies off the face (imo), the ball flight is great, and I can work the ball both ways.
