A physics PhD student emailed me asking what information in finance they should not learn. A venture capitalist came and chatted with their program and gave the advice not to learn finance so the firms can teach you the "real" models. There is some slight validity in the fact that there are a lot of people on the internet teaching fake finance. And by fake finance I mean how to get rich scams. The safest way to learn finance is to find textbooks. Most reputable publishers will have a long list of books teaching basic traditional finance, investing concepts, and of course there are good quant finance intro books like Hull's book on derivatives.

Great video as always! As for graph theory, I could think of a few use cases in quant finance. I read a paper recently that uses graph theory to shrink covariance matrix estimators to a sparse matrix. Another one would be modeling population migrations as it affects the economy. The more advanced graph theory stuff probably isn’t all that useful but certainly helps connecting the dots between other parts of math.

There is a lot of bad financial advice out there. The plain bagel has made some very good videos covering some of the "advice" out there. It's reassuring to hear you talk about the foundational text book stuff being important, sure they may not work in the real world but it gives a basis of understanding, hence why it is foundational. Everyone wants to get rich quickly but dont understand the critical input of compounding gains is time.

IMHO, it's just like an (actually mainstream) language with which we communicate efficiently. teamwork is inevitable (even for pure nerd alpha quant): talk to data vendor, pass to downstream team, bargain with risk, convince PM...😅

Hi Dimitri. I'm about to start my thesis to finally complete my economics undergraduate. I've been following you over the last 2 years and you helped me to get interested in the topic of quantitative finance. That being said, I'm thinking to research the difference between traditional (Bachelier, Markowitz, Sharpe, Ross, etc...) and modern (AI and ML) methods applied to portfolio management, and try to compare some of their advantages and disadvantages. However, I would really thank you if you can give me an opinion on the topic, given that portfolio management offers a lot of different applications and problems to solve. Thanks a lot Dimitri, keep up the great work!

Depends what you wanna do… studying for CFA right now and its very useful for traditional finance but if you want to work as a quant it will not be super useful

Hi Dimitri, great content - learning a lot. Thanks. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the following: if someone isn’t entirely sure about becoming a quant, but very sure about wanting to work in finance fields that lean a bit in the more quantitative direction (eg not model dev, but maybe quantitative treasury analyst or so), is an MSc in Finance (instead of eg MSc in Stats) a wrong choice or would that person always be better off with a more quantitative degree? Having problems deciding. Many thanks for some insights!

3:52 With all due respect, if you are unable to find >ANY< practical application for graph theory in finance, you 've probably not studied enough of it. To be fair, going deep does require an extensive knowledge of CS (NOT coding/programming), discrete math and linear algebra, especially for spectral graph theory, so imo, you should give it some time before you judge its utility. Other than that, I agree with the video.

What exactly do you mean extensive CS knowledge, graph theory is just math no?

@@avy1 the CS part mostly refers to graph algorithms, like path finding, network flow, clustering etc, and computational complexity. As for graph theory, it technically is math, but that's like saying humans are multicellular organisms; it's not really helpful.
