Honestly I've had no luck selling needle felted things on etsy. Paintings, sure, sculptures? No problem! But needle felted items just sit forever. My pieces are large elaborate realistic prices that sometimes take me 12hrs of labor to complete and I get constant messages from people asking me where they can buy the kit I used to make them ( I don't use kits, it's all freehand sculpting) or where they can buy a 'pattern' to make their own. I also get constant critism for being over priced even though I'm in line with what others are charging for pieces with the same level of complexity :(. I think many people just don't understand what needlefelting is period. They considering see it as a 'craft' due to the proliferation of kits and not an art and so it is seen as something that should be very cheap. Perhaps I ought to change my style to simpler cuter things. They seem to sell better.

It's interesting because although I sold a fair amount of jewellery, my needle felted items have sold much better. Commissions are the most popular and do take many hours to complete. I hope it picks up, are they in a shop separate to your other pieces because it might help you with SEO and tags, just a thought. Maybe galleries and shops might work better if your pieces are large and unique x

I'm in USA. Just to see how much it would be for you to ship me an item, I put the autumn colored sheep bauble in my cart. The item is $27.50 and the shipping shows as $27.50 for a total of $54.30 (us) for a sheep bauble. Some people may pay that but me personally, would not. Shipping price would cause me to turn this cute bauble down. I can understand why most your Etsy items are PDF tutorials.
@feltsbyphilippa
@feltsbyphilippa 2 жыл бұрын
I am no longer able to do free shipping for the US as it makes my UK and European customers over pay for an item by £15 at least. I certainly wouldn't pay that price for a bauble either but the option is there for people on my more detailed pieces. I did just post an item to the US this morning so amazingly and luckily for myself, some people are happy to pay the postage. I really feel like not shipping to the US but at least this way, it's up to the customer.

Hi Phillipa Thank you so much firstly for all your amazing help and advice. You have given me SO much inspiration that I started Felting as a new venture on the back of watching your videos at the beginning of last year. I spent a year raising £1,291 for our local hospital whilst I did LOTS of practice. After seeing this advice from you, I attempted to ‘set up shop’ called ‘Felted Animal Echoes’ with Etsy, but I’ve obviously done something wrong, as it says it has been suspended before I’ve even got it open. Just wondering if you could give any advice on this? I’ve read a lot of the Etsty Forums, and it seems it’s a common problem, but there no one you can talk to, to discuss what I’ve done wrong. I’ve sent a couple of emails to addresses I’ve found; one I’ve had automated replies that are no help, and the other, I’ve had no response at all. I’m wondering if I just close the shop all together and start again with a new email address?? I realise you may not have the answer, but thought I’d ask, just incase. Thanks again for all the great work you do🙌😘

Well, it's a possibility but did you confirm you etsy shop email, you have something like a week to do it. I remember I opened a t shirt/mug shop, I worked on it for a while and it got suspended just after I opened it. I hadn't confirmed something, I think it was the email but it had gone into my spam. Anyway, probably start again, I got no reply either. It can take them a week to reply to any actual issues so they are not fast but I still rate it as a good place to open a shop. Good luck and thanks for your kind words and well done on the money you have raised, outstanding 👏 😀 xx

Hi Phillipa, I've had ann easy shop selling dolls house furniture etc but it's almost died with few sales. I've got lots of five star reviews too. I realise it's a niche market. Would you suggest I start up my own KZfaq channel to get more recognition? Do you advertise on Instagram and Facebook.? My main problem is I'm not good with computers. Hi Philippa, great videos btw! I have been on etsy a few months and I am really confused about shipping. For example I sold an owl that cost £60 and £10 shipping outside the uk. So I sold one to a customer in New Zealand, but etsy only paid £60 into my bank account and it cost me £12 to send it, so I only got £48 in the end. Also, I provide free shipping to uk buyers (as it's only £3) but how can I provide free shipping to other countries (if it cost £10-£12) and factor those costs into the same item?
@feltsbyphilippa
@feltsbyphilippa 3 жыл бұрын
With the second point you can't get round it, you end up charging one price and uk customers overpay, that is why I don't like this shipping issue so much. Some people say in their description that if you are a UK customer they will refund them the difference (which is substantial if it's around £10) and that helps but people have already seen your higher price so might not even click on your item to look. For the first point, go to settings and then delivery and check you haven't signed up to free shipping over $35, I don't think it applies to New Zealand though. Then check your delivery profile and what costing you have selected for New Zealand. You select each country separately and apply your suitable delivery cost. If the customer paid £70 and you got just over £60 then that is about 12%. It's all quite tricky to exactly work it out so look at your overall figures too. There are some other KZfaqrs that go into pricing costs a bit more so maybe have a look at them too, thanks for watching x
@suzzanblac
@suzzanblac 3 жыл бұрын
@@feltsbyphilippa it is tricky! I'm hopeless with numbers, but I did cost shipping to NZ at £10. Etsy also charged the customer £10.50 tax, with a total cost to her of £80.50 - so yeah it is confusing! Anyway, thank you for your advice and happy felting! : )

I am currently struggling to sell my needle felt creations on Etsy! Not sure if my pricings right. Etsy is a very slow burner, it takes months to get it going, get family and friends to log the first five sales, get your tags right and description (lots of KZfaqrs have videos for this) and hopefully you will start to sell. Etsy is not forever but it's a good place to start as it's somewhere to direct people especially if you do craft fairs. Photos and a video are key too x

I’m curious about the “free shipping” aspect you mention.... if we remove a shipping fee and raise prices to make up for it (per Etsy’s suggestion) does that mean they will actually earn more in fees? Or do they charge fees on top of our shipping prices too? I honestly cannot figure out all the various fees that come out of my sales. There is the initial 20¢ fee to list, but then another fee once it’s sold and something called a “shipping” fee and maybe even a transaction fee... so many fees!
@feltsbyphilippa
@feltsbyphilippa 3 жыл бұрын
There are about 4 fees so yes it's extremely confusing. I tend to look at the overall fees and money earned to get the big picture. Yes they must get more commission but they list your listing higher so you should get more sales. I have just removed free shipping as sales below €35 dollars should charge shipping anyway and I had two that didn't costing me money. Plus I was overpricing for the UK to cover costs to the US which annoys me. I will report in my next vlog whether my sales are down. Despite all of this, if I had my own website, say Shopify, that would cost me £22 per month plus would i get the same sales, I don't think so. The free shipping thing has made me cross but not cross enough to leave x
