Dr. Schiffern did my rotar cuff surgery. I'm a physical therapist assistant. He's a great surgeon. I must say that P.T. afterwards was a beast!

Great visuals on this video. Got separation on both shoulders, AC joint broke and not worked out for a year. Lost 14kg of muscle and getting injured often since. Been an issue for 10 years and still looking for ways to get fit/healthier. Athlean X and Physio channels help but working on trigger points and flexibility. Have to start using these videos to get a basic understanding of what's safe to start off with.

Thank you for the video! The other day I was on top of my dresser trying to reach a high shelf and I slipped and fell on my shoulder (from the back) when Dr. Schiffern started explaining Rotator cuffs it was exactly what I'm feeling especially when he pointed out the pain in the middle of the arm!

I had a little crash on my mountain bike on September 4th, and broke the top off of the humerus in my right arm. We tried to stabilize the arm/joint and let it heal naturally, but after 4 weeks that wasn't working (it's nearly impossible to prevent all movement of your shoulder area). Dr. Temple performed surgery on October 13th, and was able to repair the damage with a plate and 15-20 screws. I began PT 3 days later, and now 4 weeks after the surgery have begun to VERY SLOWLY regain motion. If you encounter this type of injury, my recommendation would be to have the surgery as soon as possible, so that you can start PT as soon as possible. I waited 4 long, painful weeks, and during that time my shoulder locked up and thus a long painful road got a little longer and more painful. But as bad as it hurts, just put your head down and power through the pain, because if you do you will see a little progress every day! By the way, the entire staff at OrthoCarolina has been nothing short of phenomenal! Almost made it worth getting hurt just to meet these fantastic people!

+Robert Daniels - Wow. Thanks for sharing Robert. What an intense injury. Glad at least that you had good experiences with the Orthocarolina staff. I had surgery with them last year and have nothing but good things to say as well.

I have multiple of these problems. I've had many shots most of which hasn't helped. My orthopedic Dr has done surgery before but couldn't do the scope on me for some reason. I hurt so bad .Pain meds don't even help. I fall asleep but wake up in awful pain. Most of it is caused from wear & tear over the years. Ty for your video & sharing your stories

oh man! thank you for this video... I was out kicking soccer with my son and on the movement to kick I lifted my arm and felt a pinch on the side of my shoulder. two months later the pain a feel is similar as described on ROTATOR CUFF. Movement is limited and I wake myself un pain at night when laying on that side. I don't have insurance so I'll look for alternative ways to treat myself. Cheers -

Yeah- walked around with incredible shoulder pain for a long time- finally went into Ortho Carolina Winston Salem- diagnosed with rotator Cuff and Bicep tears - had surgery 6 weeks ago and the recovery pain is nothing like the injury pain---although it too is intense I am healing. Starting PT soon. Went through the cortisone shots first....surgery was the only real fix.....had to bite the bullet. There are great videos out there regarding recovery- had nerve block- med-up after!!

Good information. Dr. Schiffern is very knowledgeable and helped me after injury. I had a dislocation of my R Shoulder and tore the labrum approx. 180 degrees and had what's referred to as a Bony Bankart (small bone break). Unfortunately the injury required surgery, but it was a success. 15 months post op and I am doing what I was prior to the injury! Thanks for this post...I guess when I'm older, I will know what the arthritis is!!

I have a complete labrum tear. Two doctors wanted to do surgery. Third one did six months of physical therapy and it's 90% recovered. The injury is there, but I can do almost everything and with quality life.

I had rotator cuff surgery in 2006 due to a torn tendion. it was split like a V and completely detatched from the bone. the following year i had to have the same surgery again because it tore and detatched again and this time they had to shave down bone spurs as well. it 2012 I felt it pop again and went to the doctor and they told me the tendion split and detatched again and now i also have arthritis and bursitis. they told me that there was nothing that could be done to fix my shoulder because there is no place to reattatch the tendion due to bone growth. the only thing that can be done is total shoulder replacement but i was told I am too young to have it done and that I had to wait till i was 50.

I had a 3rd degree AC tear in my left shoulder about 10 yrs ago and never had surgery. I can't sleep on that side and my clavicle protrudes slightly upward permanently. Most movements don't create any issue. 2 days ago I had an impact to my right shoulder that felt initially like a really deep bruise. Yesterday the pain upon waking was really severe. I have no discoloration but noticeable swelling and tightness. I feared it was another AC issue but I dont remember any swelling like this the last time. Based on my discomfort and range of motion, I'm self diagnosing this as a rotator cuff injury. Thanks for the video, time to do more research.

Actually I got suffering last few months in my shoulder joint(right). Mainly I was got accident since 1998 end, I was hitting someone (robber) at night in one particular area(head) but it was missed!! just then i felt my shoulder joint are tearing then after I have taken doctor appointment and got X-ray (nothing is showing in the report that time) and got medicine for pain killer as indomethacin medicine for 1 month then I feel ok till 2021 but I carefully use my right hand and avoid heavy weights always & nowadays I am feeling very bad with pain sometimes still I am taking the same indomethacin for one time (at night) when pain is going intolerable not regular, also elbow joint is getting pain sometimes in the same hand! One think, I need to share - on last winter I played badminton game with local people at my native village after that I am feeling pain issues at elbow and shoulder joint! So I would request you if possible please suggest me for better way or better treatment please.

I fell on my back, going down stairs in the rain. It’s my shoulder blade area, infraspinatus and some other muscles. I can hardly put my seatbelt on and wash my right side, in the shower, and lie on my left side. Idk how to heal it, it’s been two months now. Praying for healing / clarity about what it is and how to heal.

I have pain in my back of my arm, tricep area and deep in my armpit under my pectoral muscle. Dealing with carpel tunnel and numbness and tingling in my left hand. At the same time I have some old (6 years ago) trauma to my shoulder regions. Neck stiffness and pain when turning my head or looking up and/or down. And all the symptoms seem to get worse if I try to stretch or do some mild workout to strengthen muscles... I'm trying that because I keep.being told there is nothing wrong with me.

According to this description, Rotator Cuff, right shoulder (dominant hand) probably result of power tennis strokes without proper training before. But the pain is in unspecified locations and sporadic (night time or when I serve in tennis) The more I rest it, the better for the following days. But if I try massages, light exercises like kinesio or stretching, it gets worse!

I pulled downwards too hard on a wrench. Still have full motion but pain is starting to get worse after 5 years now, especially with my ju-jitsu training. Does this sound like a rotator cuff tear / injury?

Two years ago I was in a bike accident, after my treatment they told me to take rest and put belt on my hand for 3months, now I feel free rotation on my shoulder, but the problem is my shoulder back is pumped up like a Ball when i up my hand in 90 degree. If i throw anything fast it's getting pain for 5 minutes. So I'm searching what problem I have and i can't get a solution.. please help me

Got a bump where my AC joint is. Not visibly noticeable, but can feel it more prominently on my left side. I’ll chalk it up as a grade 1 separation.

Right shoulder goes numb when I reach up for extended periods, sometimes when I wear a backpack. I have reduced ability to reach behind my back on my right side. When I stretch my right arm across my body for a tricep stretch it causes pain in my right shoulder. If I lay on my back and reach above my head my left arm can go further behind my head and my right arm is limited and there is pain. Right now I'm laying partially on my left side, right elbow at my side and my hand in line with my chest as I type and my right shoulder is fatigued and starting to hurt. Throwing hurts sometimes.

When my upper arm is parallel to the ground, 90 degrees to my body and I'm reaching up, it gets fatigued, tingles and starts to hurt within a minute.

Great video! When you takes about the rotator cuff it did not mention the treatment. I've been diagnosed with an impingement/bursitis and have received a couple of cortisone shots over the year. It still hurts with any motion away from my body, esp. Like putting on a jacket or overhead. What's the treatment? Thank you

Nice video, I’ve had a lot of these unfortunately. I dislocated my shoulder many times but the worst was in a motorcycle accident and had surgery on my labrums. Also dented the head of my humerus, which I guess will never heal. In a different accident skiing, I separated my other shoulder grade 3 And years ago on the same side I broke my Collar bone had some nerve damage in my arm, also from skiing. I’m a little worried I’ll develop arthritis and need a full shoulder replacement on my right side. Hopefully the techniques are pretty perfect by then. Also trying to avoid a rotator cuff tear that would be the final major injury I think, like collecting stamps.

I believe I have a combination of separated & dislocated bases on this information. I’ve been dealing with it for a few years now and I just about had enough. Very annoying to say the least.

I have had multiple shoulder subluxations, not quite full dislocations, that have caused damage to the labrum. Most of them have happened doing normal activities like reaching for a box of cereal or petting the dog. I've been told that that capsule is very loose and needs to be tightened.

Hmm, I guess separated shoulder is the closest for me, it wont heal though, it's been 6 months and still tender. I even tried not working out for 3 weeks to see if it would heal but nope. This is annoying.

I think it is rotator cuff ....my internal rotation is limited ..compared to my good shoulder ....the pain started in my shoulder blade when i did not worried about it ...then suddenly my shoulder started to froze after a week ...then after moving rotating it and trying to fix it all by my self ....6 months has passed pain is not more but i feel something restricting my internal rotation so i cannot touch my shoulder blade now . .... So should i push it to do so or anything else ??

Actually i have pain on my front part of the sholder. You can say in the middle of my front delts and it pains frequently and also it do not let me sleep on that sholder/putting head on that my shoulder so the thing is how to stop that pain what could have happened to my sholder. Struggled to open water bottle two weeks ago. Felt something happen in my hand. Pain moved all the way up to neck. Now mostly in bicep. I have EDS. ehlers Danlos Syndrome, osteoarthritis. Pain has become unbearable. Any clue what I may have done? 😬

I want to thank you for this informative video! Back in October I jumped out of a car landing on my side with my arm up which saved my head from injuries! I received minor injuries I was taking care of before I went to the hospital! They X rayed my neck hand and hip saying I had no broken bones! Now 3 months later my arm and shoulder is still in pain when I try to lift 90 degrees wingspan! With me being as skinny as I am I can naturally pop my shoulders in and out putting my arm behind my head! I have noticed that I cannot do this with my shoulder! With the information provided in this video I am going to be making a dr appt to figure out what is wrong! Again, thank you for the video!

I had little leaguers shoulder where my hernia separated from my growth plate and it was pinching my shoulder tendons and it hurt to do anything for almost 2 years

You mean shoulder jointS? There are 4 joints that collectively give you shoulder movement. I am having trouble diagnosing a shoulder injury right now because everyone thinks "shoulder" means exclusively the glenohumeral joint. It is rather frustrating.

Someone help every time I hit the punching bag my right shoulder gets stuck I have to move my whole arm up with my left hand feels like a I dislocated but I don’t think it is cuz it doesn’t hurt as much

I will soon be 70 years old. I'm a retired special education teacher who has experienced too much lifting and falling occasionally. In the past 2 years I have fallen twice which has helped insult my left shoulder. The more recent fall has been 3 months ago and my pain is still every day. I feel my injuries could be complicated with multiple issues in my shoulder

Sir my case is little different ... i had done x rays and MRI but many dr.s say there is no problem ... but i cant do exercises like bench press, shoulder exercises... It seems that my shoulder will break if i did the exercise more... and i feel annoying little pain or i dont know its pain or what actually its a diffrent feeling i cant tell in my shoulder... what it could be please help

after mri ive been diagnosed with edema of supraspinatus and possible torn labrum-been out of the gym for three months and undergoing shockwave therapy, laser therapy, and other manual techniques. It has improved a bit but def not 100%. I don't want to give up on wight training but because of my career surgery is not an option. What are chances that with my continued therapies and PT i can recover without surgery and get back to the gym? Thanks!!!

Once I injured myself in basketball and after that when I reach my back it separate and lock and pop back again but it hurt

my girlfriend was kicking me while she was in the passenger seat, we were parked & arguing, so I used my right shoulder and hand to protect my face and head...it's been over a month and the pain is getting worse .. should I see a doc ?

What about " scapular muscle detachment" that's a part of shoulder injury, but it's overlooked misdiagnosed unfortunately. Sad!

CAN ANYONE HELP ME. I HAVE PAIN BEHIND MY SHOULDER BELOW ARM PIT, ITS BEEN A YEAR. I KNOW ITS AN INJURY, BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. IT HURTS WHEN I PRESS THAT AREA AND FEEL INFLAMATION ALL DAY. ANY IDEA?

I probably have a rotator cuff injury. I stopped working out for more than 3 months now bcz of shoulder pain. Now when I try to do push ups or any other exercise in which shoulder muscles are involved my shoulder hurts so bad that I can't carry on. Also when I wake up in the morning I get so much pain and I can't even move my arm sometimes it takes more than an hour for the pain to go away. I have the same pain repeated every morning and with every excercise. I m affraid I need a surgery 😯

Youssef Ben Zahir what caused it do you know? mine was bench press and overextending on cable flys I believe.. I am getting better but it is discouraging having to put most any chest excercises on hold for now..

There are several factors in ebooks about shoulder pain . One resource I discovered which successfully combines these is the Seans Shoulder Fixer (check it out on google) definately the most incredible resource i've seen. look at all the interesting information .

Can anyone possibly diagnose my injury please, because I really need help. I am a goalkeeper I wanted to act all pro but I failed. I raised my hand above my head, and I tried to save a ball, however my arm got knocked back real hard while I am raising it, and I had shoulder pain since then. Now, I feel that my shoulder is going to pop out of its socket and get dislocated whenever I engage in physical demanding activities like swimming. However, there is a little bit of discomfort, thankfully it is not excruciating. Please help me with this!

I'm not a doctor; I'm just someone who as a teenager had a shoulder that repeatedly dislocated, and eventually got surgery. From what you said, it doesn't sound like you've dislocated it yet; if it dislocates in the future you may have to get surgery. I really don't know for sure what's going on with your shoulder, but you may have a torn labrum in which case you probably need surgery or at least physical therapy. Or you may have a condition known as upper cross syndrome that destabilizes your shoulder. It is muscle inflammation, nothing to worry about but it can be painful... you should try dry needling, it worked pretty well on my shoulder and neck pian.

same thing here. scoliosis of the neck. BAD PAIN...Go for physical Therapy. Just ask your Doctor. He will write a script for you.

i have none of these symptoms atm but when i first got injured from a fall off a longboard i couldnt raise my arm the next day without pain (symptoms of rotator cuff tear) but that went away after a week and there was relatively no pain but a bit of an odd feeling/weakness.then i went to the gym (a month and a half after the fall) and did exercises with 2.5lbs (very light) and the next day it was very painful but in a different region (the front of the shoulder) now there is a constant pain idk what to do i went to the doctor but the mri test is in 3 months -.- ... now i do have pain at the front of my shoulder when i turn my thumbs down and reach across my body what is this a symptom of?? thank you

Last year, I walked in to volleyball practices stoned, out my phone down and walked straight up to a volleyball and picked it up. Thought about stretching but said “fuck it”. Then tossed the ball up a did a jump spike. Must’ve had bad form because I felt a pop in my shoulder, but thought it was nothing. Kept going the whole night, I guess the bud numbed the pain for the night cause I played without feeling pain. Next day it was hurting and now every time I try to throw a foot ball, shoot hoops, or spike a volleyball, there’s a sharp pain in my shoulder. This is a year later and I still feel the pain trying to play some sports.

pretty sure mine is rotator cuff and not too serious.. I have skipped chest excercises for almost a week now and it seems to be healing.. I sure hope so..

I tore my Rotator Cuff playing tennis. The Ortho guy said that they could operate and that I would "probably" be ok and could play tennis again. Without it, I can do everything but play tennis or throw a ball effectively. I have know people who had the surgery and had problems forever after. So, surgery or on surgery???

+lhendrix53 Thanks for the comment. Rotator cuffs are tricky aren't they. I've probably injured mine a half dozen times. They're such tiny muscles but can really mess up your tennis game! :)

+lhendrix53 - That is the dilemma isn't it. The same is true for other injuries like ACL's - sure you can walk without an ACL tendon, but you won't play tennis. Just depends how much you want to keep playing tennis. I think you should go for surgery. That's my thought at least.

+Rob & Jonas' Filmmaking Tips How about a video for how to continue rehab AFTER PT is over. What to avoid, where to concentrate. I now have full range of motion, but my strength is gone. I have about a week to go before they finish on PT. I am still worried about re-injury.

Still can't tell what's wrong with my shoulder. Only hurts when doing incline bench, flys and crossovers. Regular bench, decline, push-ups have zero pain. Incline and flys are a 7. I don't do them.

I’m in southern Alberta, Canada. I tackled someone while training and felt a horrible pain. I thought it was dislocated, but it looks separated. I’m not sure what degree of separation. Drs here just keep sending me to physio and it only makes it worse, grind and pop, more pain. I am not being a wimp, I’ve had many injuries I rehabbed through pain. It’s been almost 5 months since the injury and I don’t know what to do. Because I can move it, the drs say they don’t know what’s wrong. I can’t move it much or it starts to become incredibly painful, it actually feels like my arm is falling off. I have a visible depression in the side and rear deltoid. The drs here seem to think that’s muscle wasting... even when I point out it happened immediately after the injury. Not down the road. I’ve almost lost my job here working modified and barely getting hours. I can’t afford an mri, and I don’t know what else to do. There’s also a noticeable gap between the capsule and the collar bone, when compared to my good shoulder. They said it’s normal... including calcification forming over the collar bone, they claim is old. When it’s only appeared recently in xrays.

Trying to help my bf. He had a 7 yrs old piggy back riding on him yesterday and fell on his shoulder. I think its dislocated and hes still just considering the cost. Silly.
