Lyrics
Shoulda been open
Shoulda done more
Shoulda learned a lesson from the year before
Shoulda been honest
Shoulda just cried
Shoulda told me there was nothing left inside
Now the road keeps rollin on forever
And the years keep pulling us apart
We lost something, I still wonder what it was
It shouldn’t matter
Shouldn’t matter, but it does
You shoulda just broken
You shoulda come clean
You shoulda been sad instead of being so fuckin mean
It shouldn’t be easy
But it shouldn’t be hard
You shouldn’t be a stranger in your own backyard
Now the road keeps rollin on forever
And the years keep pulling us apart
I know it’s over, I’m just sayin this because
It shouldn’t matter
Shouldn’t matter, but it does
I shouldn’t be angry
I shouldn’t hold on
I shouldn’t leave you messages in every little song
It could have been always
It could have been me
We could have been busy naming baby number three
Now the road keeps rollin on forever
And the years keep pulling us apart
If it’s on someone then I blame the both of us
It shouldn’t matter
Shouldn’t matter, but it
Shouldn’t matter
Shouldn’t matter, but it
Shouldn’t matter
Shouldn’t matter, but it does

Followed John Mayer since his Continuum album and as hella cheesy as this might sound, the lyrics of his sad songs are always so damn relatable… he knows the emotions of an aging single man. Love John Mayer fr… eternal talent.
@amyb7823
@amyb7823 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah but his older stuff was so much better. There was an edgy-ness to it, especially the rock n roll/blues vibe he used to have. Also the lyrics of his older songs are better. They are catchier, more deeply felt and more meaningful than this newer Mayer.
@MrOkShin
@MrOkShin 3 жыл бұрын
@@amyb7823 I Understand 110% that most would probably prefer his earlier records… I also prefer his old records almost always, but I also think this “thematic” approach from Mayer is entertaining enough and interesting - not just from a musical perspective, but also that of Mayer the “man”…. If you know Mayer, he’s very in tune and almost an aficionado of comedy, and I just feel like as he gets older he’s just taking things “less seriously” and finding the humor notes to play in alignment with his songs. Did you see his MVs recently? Hilarious 😂 All in all I love it all, but yes, I do understand what you mean. Maybe if he finds love his songs’ll mellow and evolve into something even more novel.

That's all it is :-D (sure, it extracts elements from real life, but it's not to be taken literally, ALL of the time. And we're not to know which parts are those parts ;) because fact is it doesn't matter... it's meant to be universally, ambiguously, digested in your own personal way)

Been following him since Room For Squares, and through the years, his music hasn't stopped speaking to me. This song is sad because it looks back in regret, not forward to a future of happiness. He probably wants to tell the guy who sang Half Of My Heart to take a minute and really SEE his life. Will John ever find true love? Maybe never. Maybe regret, longing, and heartbreak are part of his musical DNA.

@@dhann213 Yes you are right, there was a lot more energy in his earlier songs. I feel though that there is a consistent thread of dissatisfaction maybe? throughout his discography. Maybe the better words for his younger work is "pushing back"? Cant seem to find the right words to capture the feeling I get

@@myrapuyatsantiago love what you wrote here - '....there is a consistent thread of dissatisfaction' - he seems to write about / find both the dissatisfactions in the positive/life-giving aspects of life and in the negative/regrets. I suppose that's what makes his songwriting relatable and palatable in its angst - as it's very realistic. It's slightly romantic but yet analytical. I think that's where the genius is (despite being a phenomenal guitar player / musician).

John's craft is manifested well here! You can feel it. It hurts like a 'John Mayer song.' My heart is broken for the things he has gone through, the questions that remain, and the longing for things to have been different. I believe everyone can relate to this as life experience that we can all connect to him with. Somehow, this makes it feel better, and that's the gift that John is bestowing with this intentional, painfully sad song. Gotta love him! He is a Master, the Man and the King ❣🌟💎👑
