I recently watched the whole season again. It was completely different to what I remember as a kid, I didn't realize how political and bloodthirsty it was, and explosions galore. The attention to detail was truly exceptional. Gerry Anderson was a genius ahead of his time. Pure gold!

A good friend of mine from The UK just sent me this. How did we not have this in The US??? I would’ve loved this show when I was a kid! Shit, I loved it now at 58!🤣 I imagine the action figure toy line from this show must’ve made millions. The late 60’s and early 70’s was the greatest era for Saturday morning tv.

I had forgotten just how dark this show was - every episode had some horrific death scene and those mysterons never gave an inch.Thunderbirds was always so very upbeat with the emphasis on saving lives, whereas this series gave us some of the most nightmarish scenes ever made for a kids' tv show. Gerry Anderson was a genius!

Omg I've gone back to the early 70s growing up here in Australia (my mum says I'll never grow up 😉) between this, stingray,Thunderbirds, space 1999, fireball XL5 & ufo this was a great time to be a kid. (Plus throw in kimba the white lion, gentle ben & the banana splits.😁)

Loved all things Gerry Anderson. When I saw this on TV in the 60’s, it was Captain Grey, Captain Light Grey, Captain Dark Grey…. Still we had Captain Black 😂

I was born in 92 so not around when this was originally on but i first watched it in the late 90s when bbc 2 were showing it and watched it with my late dad. To this day it's still one of my favourite shows. This, thunderbirds and only fools and horses were my go to watch when i was off sick from school as my dad had a lot of video tapes of them. It wasn't until years later i realised the voice of the mysterons were done by the same person who voiced colonel white

Captain Black had this haunted and gaunt features after returning from the planet Mars. Great childhood memories.

The pilot! THIS is simply THE BEST Series SENSEI GERRY ANDERSON concocted ever! (with all due respect to my beloved THUNDERBIRDS). Darker,more realistic,better built dummies. I was REALLY scared by The Mysterons when I was a child. THANKS a bunch Shout Factory ✊👏👏✨

The very best Gerry Anderson series of all (IMHO). So many superb story ideas, concepts and designs here, and really thought-provoking and thematically dark like a classical fairytale. The Mysterons clearly find being unjustifiably attacked by other worlds the ultimate unforgiveable insult, even though they have the ability to reconstruct their city, and immediately set out to slowly destroy Earth in response by acts of terror delivered by evil replicants generated from elements of humanity they have murdered, and led by a replicant of Captain Black, as punishment for the man who ordered the act of aggression on them. That would have been good enough on its own, but the character of Captain Scarlet as a unique half human, half Mysteron accident who somehow retains his humanity following copying, but also has the power to - within reason - resist forms of death that would destroy a normal human, and who continues to work for Earth, is the icing on an extremely enjoyable cake. :-)

this is much better than just cartoon animation, i love it so well done, all the models, shots and effects

The innovation on this show was staggering. For example, all-female pilots, a black character (Lt Green), real-hand close-ups, microphones that dropped down from the peak of the caps. The whole thing is brilliant!

As a kid, the century 21 intro with arrow made my hair stand on end and got my heart thumping hard. No doubt in my young mind something special was coming. Then I had the long wait to watch the closing credits and argue with my brothers abour our favourite image. They're my screensavers, even today.

I remember watching this as kid. Little did I realise that years later I found out they were all based on true stories!

If only captain Scarlet had had the good sense to explain to the Mysterons that they were scared and misinterpreted their welcome for aggression and apologised.

This is amazing puppetry. Considering that the film makers had no CGI and the technology what we have now. Absolutely wonderful. My respect to you.

I always loved how the Angel's crew room chairs took them straight to the Angel Interceptors.

I love the different take on alien life in this show. The Mysterons were never hostile beings and didn't have the idea of attacking them. They wanted to welcome humans to their world.

What an amazing trip back to my youth. I loved this show and had several of the die-cast models. The SPV was my favourite with Captain Scarlett in his swing down seat.

I was born in 99 and my dad used to watch these with us as kids. Now that I found it I remember why I liked it so much.

I remember those 'Captain-in-peril' beautifully drawn artwork at the end credits. Lovely. As stiff as it looks now, you can tell a lot of work was put into getting everything just right. Appreciate it.

When I was younger a boy I used to dress up as Captain Scarlet and watch the videos of Captain Scarlet so many times. Captain Scarlet versus the Mysterons was my favourite video which I owned.

The explosion of the building at 11:24 is something chief of special effects Derek Meddings remembered well. Unfortunately for the wrong reason. As recalled in a book to accompany the 2001 re showing in Britain, Derek had built this building with many little rooms full of scaled furniture and you would see it all when the building exploded. Unfortunately the dust from the explosion was so major all the detail was lost

I really am impressed with the puppetry. Some of the little details are really interesting, and I'm enjoying the retro miniatures. 👍

What marvellous mayhem! I almost feel like a kid again! Now, if I could just get my hands on the first Thunderbirds movie. It covers the same ground as this episode and makes it clear that it was the hostile and unprovoked attack by the humans that began the war with the Mysterons.

Both captain Scarlett and thunderbirds were amazing. Major props to the late great gerry and silvia anderson.

This would be the only time that we would see Captain Black in his full Spectrum uniform as for the rest of the series, he would completely ditch it in favour of wearing black leather jackets, trenchcoats with dark grey sweaters and pants with long boots while fully embracing the entire persona of a Mysteron agent. I also loved that he never ever talked much and was mostly silent which made him more like a zombie but would only say a few words in that deep robotic voice. The glazed eyes, the pale skin and unshaved apperance complimented his new look perfectly. My all time favourite villain out of the entire Gerry Anderson shows.

Good grief, this is dark! I grew up in England, but this was, only just, before my time. It was syndicated, but we didn’t get it in our region as it only appeared on TV in London. HOWEVER, as every parent knows, kids can hack stuff, and as London was only about 40 miles away, as a 7-year-old kid, I found a way of just managing to tune into London Weekend Television (the London channel at the time), and could pick this show up. I have never seen this early episode until today, some 50 odd years later.

As a kid, the closing titles always upset me. I used to imagine how horrible it must be to die repeatedly, and no one ever seemed to ask “hey Scarlet, how’re you doing buddy? That last death must have been rough as hell. Do you wanna talk about it?” Of course this was before I understood what PTSD is. Spectrum must have had a huge occupational health department.

I never saw the very first episode, I always thought the mysterons were the bad guys. If only Captain Black had apologised.

The acting in this show is superb, better than anything Hollywood can come up with these days!!!

I loved Captain Scarlet as a kid, I have a boxed set of Captain Scarlet DVDs. The Mysterons, Captain Black, awesome adventure. Dark and silly. Puppets. Crude yet sophisticated. More nuanced than Thunderbirds which I also loved. Supermarionation. Team America. Lol.

This show is simply FAB!!! ... I mean SIG! I have been humming this theme song for years, for no apparent reason either! I watched this show religiously as a kid and that must be why.

One fact I love about the series is that the Mysteron leader, Captain Black, and Colonel White are all voiced by the same actor, Donald Gray. :-)

What a trip down memory lane... I can taste the Sugar Puffs I had get my Mum to buy to get the free Captain Scarlet goodies. Can't for the life of me remember what they were though. And the Airfix (?) model of the Angel fighter and the Corgi (?) Red, White and Blue vehicles... worth a fortune now. If I knew then what I know now... hey ho!

12/1/22 How on earth did I miss this series growing up? I think the characters are much stiffer with less movement and expression than Thunderbirds but the amazingly detailed set pieces won me over. Big laugh for a human hand entering the picture to unzip a uniform pocket! Very cool and creative series from a "grown-ups" POV.
