I recently watched the whole season again. It was completely different to what I remember as a kid, I didn't realize how political and bloodthirsty it was, and explosions galore. The attention to detail was truly exceptional. Gerry Anderson was a genius ahead of his time. Pure gold!

Having started primary school at age 5 when I watched Captain Scarlett c.1969 and not presumably not having seen these opening episodes [would not have understood them then], I was surprised at the maturity of this scene - not just having some mindless alien aggressor - but then same human fear and aggression instincts in The Day the Earth Stood Still etc. Of course, as some have pointed out, contrary to the naive human projection of human aggression, greed and conquest onto ETs, no intelligent species capable of interstellar travel would need Earth's minerals or other resources as they could easily get them from nearby asteroids or by chemical synthesis etc. I was also surprised at how much more polished and mature the whole production was than the kiddies stuff I was expecting.

The very best Gerry Anderson series of all (IMHO). So many superb story ideas, concepts and designs here, and really thought-provoking and thematically dark like a classical fairytale. The Mysterons clearly find being unjustifiably attacked by other worlds the ultimate unforgiveable insult, even though they have the ability to reconstruct their city, and immediately set out to slowly destroy Earth in response by acts of terror delivered by evil replicants generated from elements of humanity they have murdered, and led by a replicant of Captain Black, as punishment for the man who ordered the act of aggression on them. That would have been good enough on its own, but the character of Captain Scarlet as a unique half human, half Mysteron accident who somehow retains his humanity following copying, but also has the power to - within reason - resist forms of death that would destroy a normal human, and who continues to work for Earth, is the icing on an extremely enjoyable cake. :-)

They came to regret the backwards-facing car seats because when it came to filming, the traditional close-up shots of the driver ,when edited with longer shots that showed the car speeding along, had an unwanted jarring effect on the viewers, especially if they were new to the show and didn't know about the deliberately rear-facing seats. This led to them adding dialogue to explain the orientation of the driver e.g. when re-fuelling the petrol pump attendant would remark on the innovation and ask the driver if it was difficult to drive facing backwards. @@iconicshrubbery

The explosion of the building at 11:24 is something chief of special effects Derek Meddings remembered well. Unfortunately for the wrong reason. As recalled in a book to accompany the 2001 re showing in Britain, Derek had built this building with many little rooms full of scaled furniture and you would see it all when the building exploded. Unfortunately the dust from the explosion was so major all the detail was lost

Gerry Anderson was actually approached by Stanley Kubrick to work on 2001: A Space Odyssey. He turned him down for a reason that seemed right at the time (and which I forget) but which he admitting to being a great regret. The model-making was first rate, as was much of the miniature photography of things like explosions and the raging inferno of a burning oil well.

This would be the only time that we would see Captain Black in his full Spectrum uniform as for the rest of the series, he would completely ditch it in favour of wearing black leather jackets, trenchcoats with dark grey sweaters and pants with long boots while fully embracing the entire persona of a Mysteron agent. I also loved that he never ever talked much and was mostly silent which made him more like a zombie but would only say a few words in that deep robotic voice. The glazed eyes, the pale skin and unshaved apperance complimented his new look perfectly. My all time favourite villain out of the entire Gerry Anderson shows.

Good grief, this is dark! I grew up in England, but this was, only just, before my time. It was syndicated, but we didn’t get it in our region as it only appeared on TV in London. HOWEVER, as every parent knows, kids can hack stuff, and as London was only about 40 miles away, as a 7-year-old kid, I found a way of just managing to tune into London Weekend Television (the London channel at the time), and could pick this show up. I have never seen this early episode until today, some 50 odd years later.

As a kid, the closing titles always upset me. I used to imagine how horrible it must be to die repeatedly, and no one ever seemed to ask “hey Scarlet, how’re you doing buddy? Hollywood actors, with their CGI and multi million dollar budgets cant come with anything near as good as Gerry. This stuff is over 50 years old. Their marionettes were better actors than the assh*les they have in their multi million dollar holly'wood' productions. Those 'actors' are plastic, cant act without the help of some CGI. Boll*cks to them. Gerry is the real deal

Cptn.Scarlet was a big step up.And we happy kids BOUGHT INTO it, we grew up with those series. UFO was the final step towards adulthood, with real men and women, mixed races and young and old. Actually, other way around ^^; captain scarlet's puppets were made to be more movement and expression, to the point they made the puppets realistic..... there is one slight problem withit though. In the first series they had this special system that tried to mimic extreme emotions too, and it reeeeeeally didn't look good XD so they stopped using it after season one..... honeslty those faces got horrific or comedically funny lol
