Not really, Suzu have the lowest social status in the family and they just boss her around and make her do all the domestic housework. She basically became a serf. Then again, that was probably the norm for married women during those times.

The point is that it is not a good sign of a relationship and this is challenged throughout the movie until, ironically, they fight like a couple on the train, and that is when they become a genuine couple. Although the marriage was instant, from no point from the very beginning to the wedding did she...at least...question her soon-to-be husband's name? So it's fair for the family to worry, in my opinion.

Weddings in those days were so simple and lovely.It is sad that war brought tragedy to beautiful lives of so many people like the couple in this movie.Really sad :(

its a cultural thing, the removal of clothing isnt to be done in public, regardless if there is clothing underneath or not

@@NikiSakura13 Yes & no. You’re both right in a way. He actually was upset though because his parents wouldn’t let him marry the other girl (Rin) he was in love with. Suzu was his second option for marriage, but he loves her too.

@@michaelvelazquez6393 In the original manga, he gave up on marrying his former lover due to opposition from his relatives, but he wasn't forced into this marriage, so what he feels is not anger. He may have been thinking about "alternate ways" as they were in the original manga, but this is something many people only think about on their wedding day. In the extended version of the movie, there may be more episodes of "former lovers" in line with the original, but in reality, he has no choice but to throw everything away and "elope" in order to marry her. It was not a realistic choice at the time (including being at war). Of course he understands them all.
