If you’re making a list of musicians whose contributions to 20th century popular music have gone under-recognized, Floyd Cramer should be near the top. This slip-note style not only took over Nashville in the ‘60s, it then can be heard bubbling up in the ‘70s singer-songwriter movement and rock. Listen to Elton John’s technique in Tiny Dancer, or Larry Gonsky’s electric piano intro on Looking Glass’s Brandy. In fact, if you start listening for him, you’ll hear Floyd in a huge percentage of all the pop music recorded in the last sixty-three years. The most remarkable aspect of this is just how little the technique has changed as it passed from generation to generation of keyboardist- a testament to Floyd’s originality.

I will never forget being maybe 8 or 9 listening to my favorites over and over. I don't remember which album it was, only a hand drawn character of Floyd on a keyboard with the keys flying off...ohhhh Musicbox Dancer and Rhythm of the Rain, still my favorites

I bought your grandad's album "Class of '67" 56 years ago, because it was the year I graduated high school...I wasn't necessarily a country fan, but I instantly became a Floyd Kramer fan...this is awesome!

I grew up listening to your grandpa as a child in the early 60's and into my teens in the 70's.....Last Date still touches my soul on a level that few songs do. During the late 70's, I was going to College in Central Florida. I had a Full Size Winnie the Pooh Bear. I had an 78 LP Album. I so Danced so many Lonely Nights to Last Dance with mybPooh Bear. Still have the Album and a Sterio, that still Plays. Have Always Loved Floyd Cramer. He was my Mama's and Brother's Favorite. As there were and still are many Piano Players in Her Side of the Family. I got in Trouble too, Cause I wanted and still do play my Ear most of the time. God Bless You Jason, And Your Family. Ya'll are a True Blessing to So Many. It is not a 'mistake'. It¨s a simulation of what a singer does, a violin player, a trombone player etc. Slides in to a pleasent harmony. Gives a sensation of tension before reliefe. Makes the reliefe so much more pleasant. Short but still pleasant. Made your granddad immortible. Thank you for a very interesting channel.

My husband and I went to the Victor valley College for the second show of our little concert series. Which I was so excited to watch and here Floyd play. My father loved western music. Today it’s called country or country music, but the real ole timey true country music was called western. My father played with Conway twitty, he played acoustic guitar. So I raised up on the best western music there ever was. From George Strait, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette. To name a few greats. Today Floyd Coleman the grandson to Floyd Cramer played his heart out. Made me cry! As my dad passed just a few years ago, when he played those songs, melted my heart! So beautiful how he plays. All the memories of my dad just poured through the songs. Thank you Floyd for a day of remembrance! Keep on playin! God bless! Don’t stop coming to our little town. Ya-all we’re great!

The first time I heard you, you were playing with Meagan Taylor. I cried real tears of joy! When I was a teenager, every nickel I could afford I used to buy albums featuring Floyd and Chet.

I’ve always loved Floyd Cramer style piano! He was the best piano player I ever heard….until I found your channel Jason! I must say you may actually play better than your granddad! I could listen to you play all day! I’m 82 years old and self taught piano player. My grandmother started teaching me how to “play by ear” when I was seven years old. I took piano lessons one summer but stopped because my teacher told me I’d never learn to play piano if I didn’t stop trying to play by ear! Well I’ve showed her! I just listen to a song over and over until I memorize the tune then set down and “ pick the notes out”. You have taught me about your granddads slip notes and I’m tackling that now. You have a God given talent to play the piano! Enjoy your playing so much! Do you have any CDs out? I’ve looked on Amazon and can’t find any! I just received a Cd of your granddad today and have been playing it! Love it! Keep up your good work!

Kind Sir" Jason Coleman"...you did a very good "History" espousal; about Floyd Cramer and his "NEW" musical's; that knocked almost EVERY one off; when they heard it. And it sent Floyd to the "Nth" degree Banks. And thank you Coleman. But, Now... I being 92 yrs old. And associated with the Nashville Country Music..I know exactly; how Floyd's "NEW" music, got started. IE: We must go back to 1954. Where a great Country Singer, "Web Pierce". And they wrote a song for him. But, his Steel Guitar changed his Guitar. To put some "lightning" in his Steel Guitar! And what he did: was to have Mr" Bygsby"; to put 2 Pedals on his SG. And what He did, was NEW so much; it drove almost every SG players Crazy! And the same with Producers, Directors and Singers, etc! "Wanting THAT Sound". Now they called it: "The Moving Note"! And let's see how Buddy Isaacs' "Set Up: his Pedal Steel Guitar"! (PSG). Here's it... (Pedals) (Buddy's setup, called "Copedent"! 1 2 E B C# G# A F# D E B C# G# A E So Mr Coleman; you have your "Slip Note"s on the PSG! Wow! And the Song was "Slowly"! For it shot Web out of the sky! And when ever one heard that moving note; they loved "that" sound. They wanted it! Wow! Because, it was so a "Different Beautiful"! And "They WANTED it!" Thus, over night, Singers in Nashville wanted "That" Sound. And I was a SG players too. And I had to put pedals; on my guitar Too. Now, let's see, what the Famous Chet Atkins did. Yes he Knew that the Pedal Steel Guitars were taking OVER "Yesterday"! So He talked to a Piano player, "Hargus 'Pig' Robbins" . Then Chet called Floyd into his office. And Chet told him what was happening. And he said this, "Listen to this song. And Listen to that new Music! I would like for YOU; to do that on your Piano"! And believe it not; Floyd took it up; and overnight; after "Last Date"; a "Millionaire Quintessential Piano Player; "Was the Man"!. And they called it the "Bent Notes"! Now, I see that you say it's a "Slip-Note". And you did, a great narrative, of talking about this unbelievable NEW Music! But, it's the same. LOL! Sorry, I took so much time for this Comment! But I wanted your people; to KNOW what happened! That took Nashville Country Music; OVER the Sky! Wow! Thank you Coleman. You did it great. May Jesus bless You and Yours, Always. AMEN!❤

I mever paid close attention, but the "slip note" must be Floyd's "slurred" yransitiin from a note up or down one note at a 1/32nd note. Nobody else ever copieed Floyd's wonderful style. That you Jason for the celebratiion of the legacy of your grandfather. He's right up therr with Chet Atkins, and everybody else on the RCA musician list.

WHAT IS IT, about selectively playing a piano OFF KEY, that we cannot get enough of? I even heard Liberace play a few songs in this style. Is that one of Floyd's personal pisnos?

In your description of the slip note you mention that your grandad added a tenor/harmony note above the melody note. I read music so can you describe what that tenor/harmony note would be? Would it be an octave above the melody note or would it be a higher note of the chord, like the 4th or 5th of 1, 4, 5?
