Keith Hernandez tells a great story where he hit a grounder to a left-side infielder, ran like hell to first base into a bang-bang play at first base. The umpire (I believe it was Doug Harvey) pumped his arm, thumb up, in an enthusiastic "OUT!" gesture while shouting, at the top of lungs, "SAFE!". Keith looked at him and asked, "Well, am I out or am I safe?". The umpire said, "I called you safe. But 50,000 people saw me call you out. So, you're out." Keith trotted on back to the dugout.

My issue would be this. The batter ran to first, the ump called a foul ball (causing the runner to stop), the catcher thows the ball to first. If the foul ball was not called, the runner would have kept going. Yes, the runner probably would have been out, but he was not given the chance to run it out.

Good point. I thought the same thing. The catcher may have thrown the ball away to avoid hitting the runner.

The announcers are nuts; "If he doesn't miss the call in the first place..."? If he upholds the original blown call, Gibbons is arguing. But now how does Showalter argue the call? He's got a worse angle from the dugout than anybody else? The replay showed that they made the right call when they overturned it. While I'm no Angel Hernandez fan, you gotta give him credit for asking for help. I'm telling you, when this replay rule is instituted, a whole lot of managers, announcers and fans are going to get more than they bargained for.

Isn't it better to get the call right?
@itsinthenet
@itsinthenet 10 жыл бұрын
Alan Hess The problem is, once the ball was called foul, they could not get the call right. Yes, it was a strike and not a foul. So, that would not have been right. But, consider this scenario: The batter hits the ball down the third base line. It is fielded by the third baseman just before it went foul. The umpire yells "FOUL BALL", the third baseman hears it and throws the ball back to the pitcher. The batter doesn't and runs through first base. In the name of "getting the call right", after a discussion by the umpires, should the ball be called fair and the batter awarded first base? I would argue that he should not because the foul call is what stopped the third baseman from throwing the ball. That is similar to what happened here, The ball was called foul as the as the batter was running to first on a presumed dropped strike three. The batter stopped running when the ump yelled "FOUL BALL" and then proceeded to take his position back in the batter's box. The catcher throws the ball to first anyway. The batter was not able to run the ball out because of the foul call.
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 10 жыл бұрын
itsinthenet You are totally correct. Angel would have been better off letting the play continue and if one of the other umpires had it as foul, they could have then killed the play. Hel thought he heard the ball hit the bat. He was wrong and there is no easy way to fix it. It happens.

I'm an umpire, and it's always tough to make a fair/foul call if you're honestly not sure. If i'm working in a 3 or 4 man crew, and I have another umpire who I know based on the mechanics manual is also probably watching where the ball lands i'm going to call if fair if i'm genuinely not sure. In that case, we can change the call without worrying about where to put the runners. Also, I work under FED 95% of the time and FED says once you call it foul you can't change it. FED is high school rules for those that don't know. (NFHS)

If you can read lips which is hard too hard to do here in this particular case because Buck Showalter has such a big mouth this argument has nothing to do with the call being overturned. The argument is that if Angel Hernandez, who is a fuck up of an ump to begin with, hadn't called a foul ball that Chris Davis could have ran to first to beat the throw. Since Angel called foul ball Buck is saying that Chris Davis stopped running so he could not beat out the throw. Buck isn't arguing the overturn because his team has nothing to gain from that except maybe another pitch in the at-bat. He is trying to get a base runner on first for free. At 2:20 you can see Buck Showalter say, "Why did he stop?" as he is pointing to the first base running line. A few seconds later he says, "You called foul ball. That's why he stopped."

BAD decision. Immediately upon calling "FOUL BALL", the ball was dead. That means nothing could happen (even the tag) until the ball is put back in play. Calling "Foul Ball", caused the runner to stop attempting to advance to 1st base, which COULD have ended in an errant throw. This was a BAD reversal. As bad a call as it may have been in the beginning, to reverse it was worse.

Mark Haswell I was playing in a game a couple years ago. I was at 3rd base this particular time when a pop fly was hit high over the first baseman. The ball caused him to drift about 5ft into foul territory right next to 1st base. He was camped under the ball and was about to catch it - it was probably still about 50ft up in the air - when the home plate umpire yelled "FOUL BALL!" Foul Ball???? That means the ball is dead, no one can advance, and there is no out....well, the first baseman caught it, and THEN the umpire called the batter out. WHAT THE FUCK!!! When an umpire fucks up the call and calls "Foul Ball", it kills the play and players cannot advance. In fact, players give up the effort even, when they hear the declaration of "foul ball". Over-ruling the call did a disservice to the offense. BAD BAD CALL.

The umpires did the best they could in a shitty situation. Sucks for the Orioles but overturning the call was the right thing to do because their job is to get the call right and it clearly wasn't a foul ball. +jarod1672 No. The umpire called "foul ball" immediately. At that point the play is dead so the batter stops running. That play should not be reversible, even though the initial call was wrong. I don't think MLB wants players to run out balls that are called foul.

I'm sick and tired of announcers, players and managers saying "how can an umpire 90 feet away have a better view than the umpire who was right there?" They are the same ones who say "ask for help" when the umpire refuses to do so. Well, do you want help or not? If you do, stop bitching and complaining if the call is reversed!!!! The key is to get the call right, and that's what happened here. Angel Hernandez showed great professionalism by realizing he may have missed the call and did the right thing. He gave Showalter a lot of rope before he was deservedly tossed. Say what you want about Hernandez, but I have never, ever, seen him lose his temper the way most players and managers do.

No one yet has addressed what really happened. A. Hernandez heard something (hitting shin guard?) and raised his foul-signal hands too quick. He then said to himself "dang it". He then went to a base ump and said "I totally screwed that up. Tell me you saw something - then we'll get the call right". Handled the best? Nope. But we umps are human. But ... they DID fix it. Irregardless of Buck liking it. From the shelter of the locker room, Buck can watch this same replay and see that the correct call was eventually made. I'd stake money on that; and if you've umped college/minors or above for any time at all, you've been there as well.

He called foul ball!!! That is the issue! You can see Buck say to Angel "You stopped the play." Buck is 100% right. Even if Davis swung and missed at strike three the original call was a foul ball aka a "dead ball". The putout made at first shouldn't even be an issue because Davis was never given a chance to run to first base because of the original "foul ball" call! Angel blew it! AGAIN! Angel clearly puts his hands in the air and you can hear him say "foul ball". Angel missed the call and to make up for his stupidity he asked the other 3 stooges to make the call at home plate for him ,even though NONE of the umpires are even close enough to see the play definitively. You can't change that call. Once you call foul the play is stopped and only until the umpire can resume play. I would have protested that game if I was Buck. He is right. Angel Hernandez is the WORST ump in the bigs. I can understand if he "missed" the ball and made the initial foul call. But, at that point the game was stopped and Davis was never allowed to run to first on the missed third swinging strike. They CANNOT reverse that call. Complete nonsense. That's why Buck threw the umps out at the end. lol

It is on that particular play. Once a foul ball is called, it is a dead ball, and the batter should have been returned to the plate. It's not an appeal play, and it is not supposed to be overturned. Hernandez should have let the play transpire, THEN ask for help. Once he called it foul, it should have stayed that way.

The announcers are all over the place. Hernandez makes the initial call "foul" Dickey tells him to ask for help. He does, and now they say that "he got the call wrong in the first place" So now he corrects the call, the replay backs it and now the announcing team jumps on Hernandez for getting it right? They're hacks. The call was overturned, it was correct and what's Showalter's argument? He has a worse angle than the umpire and what can he say? "I saw it"?

The umpires broke two rules here: 1. Balls and strikes are NOT up for debate. I know this is the current rule, but that might've been added when the process of challenging a call was updated and formalized. So I'm not positive if that's applicable to this game. 2. Very few things can happen on a dead ball. Striking out is not one of those things.

You can ask the umpire to check with other umpires to see if they saw something differently. You usually don't get it unless the home plate umpire realizes that he missed the call. These announcers completely missed the argument. The batter was not out on strike three because it was a dropped third strike. The play was alive. This is not football, this is baseball. Yes, Davis struck out, yes the play was initially called incorrectly, but that was the ump's mistake. Why use instant replay for this? Why use it at all in baseball? If Hernandez got the call wrong, then he got it wrong. All you have is a man on first. It's no big deal. It's only the second inning anyway. Just move on and play ball!

DemilichFan Baseball happens to be my favorite sport. I also watch NFL and occasonally NBA, but for me mostly it's baseball. I am getting really sick of seeing managers and players getting thrown out just because they argued a call. We see coaches and players in other sports arguing calls all the time. We don't see them getting thrown right and left. No, it's just baseball where the umpires somehow got the big-headed idea the game is about THEM. It isn't. We don't go to a game or tune it in to see umpires, we watch a game to see players. So, someone argued a call, so what? We see that in other sports. Ump, shut up and call the game.

DemilichFan It's not a great call for the base ump, but the plate ump often gets blocked out on low fouls like that and the base umps actually have a better view. Angel Hernandez saw the deflection but he couldn't tell if it was off the bat or the catcher's mitt. I'm an umpire and there are many times when working the bases (in a 2-man system) that you come up with a foul call (just like that one that either nicks the bat or fouls off the batter's leg) and the plate umpire can't see it because the catcher is blocking him out.

Nick Barrett How do you know they got it right? You can't tell from any replay angle whether he fouled it off or not. Not definitively. And there's no way a base umpire can tell it ought to be reversed. If Buck didn't have an argument, Hernandez wouldn't have let him get his money in for a minute before tossing him.

You can clearly see in replay that the ump got the call initially wrong. But, the ball was live and it was called dead with the foul ball call. The runner stopped on the dead ball. The catcher throws it to first. The runner was denied the chance to make it to first safely. Therefore, they could not have gotten the call right no matter what they did.

The ball did hit the catcher's mitt, it then hit the ground, then hit Angel's shin guard. Three sounds in about a quarter of a second. Not an easy call to make.

As soon as this call was reversed and the batter-runner declared out, the strongest argument is the fact that, irrespective of the initial call being wrong or right, the umpire called FOUL BALL numerous times, thus prompting the batter to end his advance to 1st and the ball being thrown to first when the ball was dead. When the umps realized they got it wrong, they should have explained to the Blue Jays, "Look, I'm sorry. We got it wrong, but the ball was killed and thus we can't retroactively go back, pretend like the play was live, and act like the throw was legally made with the ball in play." Obviously the Jays won't accept it, so that'll likely be an ejection coming, but at the end of the day that's the least shitty option you have. Admit your mistake, but let the call stand.
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 6 жыл бұрын
Belakfan3, the problem with your argument is that the umpires have the authority to overturn an incorrect call and take whatever steps necessary to make decisions on the outcome of the play if the incorrect call had not been made.
@belakfan3

That's fair. I do understand that my opinion doesn't really stand as law in the game, I just think for the purposes of fair-play, that's the best thing we can do. I will admit my vision is tainted with little league ball, which had this been little league, the only option is to let the call stand, so that's obviously playing into my vision of the events.
