No translation of that song will ever do the Spanish version justice. There's something amazing about Spanish poetry that defies translation. There's a reason they call them the romance languages.

Lin-Manuel Miranda told in an interview that the reason behind Dos Oruguitas was that he wanted to tell the story of two caterpillars in deep love, who held each other close through night and day, and although they would want to keep holding on to each other, in an everchanging and evolving world, they would eventually have to let go of each other in order for themselves to change and become what they were meant to be, butterflies, in hopes to one day meet again.

To be more specific, the yellow butterflies relate more to one of the characters in the book called: Mauricio Babilonia. He was followed by a swarm of yellow butterflies all the time people could barely see his face. People speculate that Abuelo Pedro is inspired on him, although the movie has TONS of references of the book.

Yeah when I first watched the movie (even though I really enjoyed the movie) I felt something was off? Like maybe the something was missing or the ending was rushed? Afterwards I realized that it was weird for me bc the abuela & Mirabel both met each other in the middle. This movie was an idealized best case scenario and my brain was rejecting it bc to me that was not realistic. Now that I’ve realized this, I can silence my brain a bit and enjoy this movie 100%

The sheer anguish on grandma's face as she collapses gets me every time. The sense of isolation she must have felt as a de facto leader of a new village as well as mom to three kids in a giant empty house must have been overwhelming. Also, I'm guessing she either didn't have or lost her entire extended family and that made her hold onto her children too tight...projecting her own fear of not being strong enough or perfect enough for her community.

Also the fact that the scene where abuela is crying in agony after watching her husband die shows up in the beginning as well, but it’s less emotional and more of a “oh this is what happened” storytelling vibe and left what actually happened to the end. A nice touch :)

I think the way it is at the start of the movie is either showing how Abuela told it to Mirabel as a child or how she viewed it at the time. In this scene Mirabel is told a story she already know, but she is forced to reconsider how she viewed it as a child and now she understands the pain and reality she hadn't fully grappled with in this story that had been part of her life for ever. As a child my father would only tell me that my grandfatther died fighting 'bad people' and such. Only later did I learn what actually happened to him in Estadio Chile.

I relared to hard to this. I knew my family story, but at 21 or so my mom finlly sat me down and told me the ugly, gritty details of our family and daaaamn, that explained the trauma pretty well. I finally understood that the pain my grandmother, and the generations before her, suffered as women abandoned by their husband and left alone with their children. When MIrabel sees how much Abuela really hurt... yeah, it felt like that.

This scene really is the heart of the entire movie, it's so powerful because every aspect of the movie and Abuela's character has been leading up to this exact moment. When she's telling the story to Mirabel in the very first scene she has a /drastically/ softer reaction when Abuelo fades away, because she's convinced herself for so long that she handled it well & that strength is what built up her family & community, when really it was fear & pain that she's just been avoiding her whole life. She never gave herself the time to properly mourn the loss of her Pedro & it ate away at her while she unwittingly channeled that loss into mistreating the family. This scene is where she finally has that realization, and it's what allows her to heal and move forward in a healthy way so that the family can finally grow together again.

Oruguitas, in Spanish the "u" doesn't have sound between "g" and "i"or"e" unless it is written like this: "ü" so it's read o/ru /gi/tas... "antigüedad" (antiquity) is read an/ti/gu-e/dad... also, "partir" may mean to break and to leave, I loved your reaction!... Something that I've seen thanks to this movie is that our culture is open to everybody who want to join or feel it. What I love is that even in their reconciliation there's a lot of symmetry and parallels with their initial fight, very cyclical in a way. In their fight, Abuela says "The cracks started with you, Bruno left because of you, I don't know why you weren't given a gift but it is not an excuse to hurt this family" - when apologizing she reverses it, "You never hurt this family" and then "We are broken because of me" acknowledging she's the one who started the cracks. Mirabel does the same thing; her last line is "the miracle is dying because of you" and her first line in the apology is "we were saved because of you", and then answers her by saying nothing is broken that they can't fix together. It's really interesting how parts of the movie are in perfect parallel, with Abuela asking Pedro for help to open her eyes, then saying Pedro sent them Mirabel. Or Mirabel escorting Antonio to his door, then ends with Antonio grabbing Mirabel's hand to escort her to the door. Or how the movie starts with "Abre los ojos, open your eyes" and it starts to end with "Open your eyes, abre los ojos".

The thing is, I don’t think what Mirabel does is an apology. She never says she’s sorry, she doesn’t take anything onto herself, she doesn’t admit to anything she did wrong in the past or say what she will do better in the future. It’s a forgiveness. It’s understanding the awful things that happened to abuela, thanking her for what she did right, and letting her know she wants her to keep being in her life going forward

Yes! You see her feel fully empty. I also love that you see that difficult moment of strength when she chooses to stand and walk forward (literally, but also metaphorically), and become the Abuela we know, building her own future for herself and her triplets, becoming the person her family all want so much to live up to (for better or for worse). It reminds me of the beginning of Coco, “and the mother? She didn’t have time to cry about that walk away musician”. I feel like it’s so common in my Latin culture to see that kind of strength of character, but also to see how navigating that situation is so difficult and can cause far-reaching affects. And thank you Mamá Tuto for pointing out Abuela’s strength, especially that the whole community within the brand new encanto turned and suddenly this young woman is the leader of this whole community, which is a pressure we never get to see in the movie until this moment and it’s so brief. People do not give Abuela enough credit for everything she’s had to do _even after losing her Pedro and in addition to raising triplets alone_!

I loved this song soo much. As a Colombian, the way they portrayed this was respectful and touching, but most of all, the song for me is about the hope despite everything that happened to abuelita, and the mistakes that she has made. At some part of the song it says "vienen milagros","miracles are coming" and at the end it says "ya son milagros","you are already miracles" and it so fits not only with the message of the movie about mirabel being enough even without a gift but also that they have done it... they have gone through what they needed to and they came out of it stronger. Which is also said in the song "hacia adelante seguiras", which would translate to "you will move on"... and now I'm crying. Beautiful Video 😍❤

Some additional interesting stuff: The yellow butterfly is often associated with Colombian writer and Nobel-prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez; Lin-Manuel and the directors visited the Gabriel Garcia Marquez foundation in Colombia. At the end Yatra sings: "Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisalidas" -> (To the "butterflies") "You're finally miracles, breaking chrysalides" I thought that was an awesome, direct connection to the fact that the true miracle is the person, not the power. Dead/missing parents in disney is common, but here it also connects with forced displacement that has been common in Colombia since the early days with constant civil wars up until the present day with the armed conflict that is ongoing in Colombia. Thanks for reviewing and understanding Encanto and the songs, it's fun and interesting to see your takes! Love mama Tuto, greetings from a Colombian living in the US.

I can't imagine how hard it is to listen to this song in it's original untranslated form. Every time I see that part in the movie I cry because of how tragic the backstory of abuela was, how moving the music was and how hauntingly beautiful the singer performed it. That combination breaks my heart without fail even when I had no idea what the artist was singing. I looked it up later but man it would have ruined me to hear that and understand the lyrics the first few times that I heard it. The song was already stunning as a backdrop to that storyline. It's true what they say about music transcending language. I didn't need to understand the exact words to understand the mixture of pain and hope the song was trying to convey.

The Walt Disney story is true, the part about his mother, but the 'processing his grief' through the movies part is just a theory/urban legend. It is extremely common for storybook characters to be missing a parent or just straight up be an orphan due to the nature of the story. Parents are a lifeline/support for kids so making the protagonist orphans or having them in single parent households (mostly the mother being dead or 'gone' in some way) takes away a big emotional lifeline, thus making the protagonist more self-relient and making their triumphs in fairytales more satisfying since they were able to 'find the strength in themselves' so to speak. And even in the movies that have that one parent, they either have drama with the parent or they're written out some other way (Ariel and her father disagreeing, Jasmine and her father disagreeing, Belle being separated from her dad, etc.) It's also interesting to note that so many Disney movies with female protatginist are missing their mother figures as well, again because of them being that emotional lifeline (although I have a theory that it's because the writing rooms of these older Disney movies were mostly men so they couldn't or just weren't interested in writing a daughter/mother relationship, but I digress). That has been changing in recent years with films like Princess and The Frog, Brave, Moana, etc placing importance in the mother/grandmother figures in relation to female protagonist too. No surprise that Disney, a company who credits their biggest successes from fairytales, would repeat this story trope a lot too.

I agree. But in this specific movie the death of Pedro (the grandfather) is the real story of Colombia. There are many families that suffered forced displacement because of the armed conflict. It is a problem that even today has a mark in the families that lose somebody trying to protect their families. My grandfather lost his sister in this conflict, she was killed by one of this armed groups, so this is not just a story trope, is a commemoration to all the women, men and children that were victims in this unfair war of power.

Also, the company board has been evolving . People like Ike Perlmutter have been gradually shown the door pushed away from decision making. That's why we are getting better stories with a modern tone.

@@valenmoreno2360 I know about Colombian history and this film’s connection to it very well, my comment was more in response to his statement about it being a running theme in Disney’s other films and it’s theorized relation to Walt’s mother’s real world death.

15:04 i take it as the husband talking to his wife in that moment. Instead of "you have to keep growing, you must make it through" in the context of the movie he'd be telling her "you have to keep pushing forward, you must make it to the other side of the river"

The layering and symbolism in this song is so deep and beautiful. The double meaning with the caterpillars and relationships (couples, families, community). Of how no matter how much you love each other, you sometimes have to let go, so that everyone can grow and adapt in this ever changing world. And trust that at the end of it everyone can come out better, more beautiful, and free.

Love the deeper interaction here, since you saw the movie together already. This song pushes language barriers aside & reaches the heart. Some are a little too quick to judge abuela, but she went through it all. Alone. Then to face her greatest fear, of failing her family. Her intense pain is felt a second time. Mirabel’s words affirming that they were a family because of her was equally powerful.

Also, in The Family Madrigal song, she put a big emphasis on *earning* the miracle they got. I think she was putting a bit too much pressure and her family wasn't so happy, and when the cracks start forming, she felt like they weren't doing something right. They had to do more more more to earn their gift and that's exactly what was breaking it

I agree with you. I really appreciate the empathy shown to abuela. Many people who suffer trauma develop unhealthy coping mechanisms and perspectives in their attempts to move on in life. Yes, she put immense pressure on her family, but the strength that it takes to keep moving forward after losing your home and spouse while being a mother to 3 children and becoming a pillar in the community is insurmountable. We are all just people. Every flaw and every weakness has a story.

I always interpreted the song as two caterpillars who are so in love that it becomes toxic in a way, like they decided to give up on their future and stay caterpillars together. But in the end, the only way to really grow and become butterflies is to part ways and get inside your own cocoon, and then if it was truly meant to be the two butterflies will find eachother again.

Coming from a different background affects how you interpret the song. I see it as two caterpillars navigating a changing world that they cannot control and the only way to grow and survive is to basically part ways and destroy their former selves in order to create a new future and then one day reunite (turn into butterflies). They are happy being caterpillars but they are forced to become butterflies.

I'm Colombian and the context of the whole abuelo tragic is actually something common in Colombia. There is many people displaced from their home by some outlaw groups with different goals, guerrilla, ELN, narcos, etc. They take their lands to grow drugs. Despite the government and the military efforts to fight them, this still happens a lot. Hopefully, someday it will be over.

the english translation is pretty equal to the English version of the song it doesn't lose anything really. two people in a loving relationship always together, holding on to each other, have to separate, and grow, and change, to come back together, to build a future together. whether it's a lover, or family member, or friend, those we hold dear. we all need time and space to grow and change .. it's a hard hitting lesson.

Jacob, I did some research and it is true. When Walt and Roy gained some success, Walt bought a house for his parents. The furnace had some issues so he had some of his workers from the studio repair it before his parents moved in. Apparently there was still a leak and his parent were overcome by the gas. His father recovered in the hospital but his mom didnt make it.

I love hearing your mom break it down. Also, I think one of the reasons this death is so intense and somewhat different than other Disney parental deaths is reality of the Colombian history, and the knowledge that real people suffered these kinds of losses, and there are so many unknown heroes like Pedro. Here’s a love for the internal strength and love of these Colombian families. Thank you for this beautiful video. Thank you, Jacob and your mom, for this video! I love how y'all took us on your journey through this song. Your relationship with your mom seems very special! Don't know if anyone has answered their question about the butterflies flying through the crack in the mountain, so... When Mirable ran away she ran through the crack and ended up at the river where Abuela lost her husband. (the river was part of what was blocked outside the protective mountains that rose up with the miracle). Mirabel is not aware of where she is until Abuela tells her story. After Mirable and Abuela embrace and the butterflies fly towards crack, they are flying back home...just like Mirabel and Abuela.

In all the reviews ive seen, I have not seen anyone mention the beautiful moment in the song "All of you" when Bruno hands Mirable the doorknob abuela says, "Ábre tus ojos " "open your eyes, what do you see?" and Mirabel sees her own reflection. When I watch the part of her walking past all the doors, it looks to me that they are all kind of looking to her for strength, direction and a sense of unity. Like they are all struggling through these lives that look perfect from the outside but deep down she is still their abuela and they want to be vulnerable and get the reassurance that they need. But at these points in her life, she can’t see it, hence the “I lost sight of who out gift was for” and she walks by them without noticing or ignoring the signs to be strong. Just such a beautiful subtlety that adds to the narrative and the emotions of the movie

It will always bother me that the movie’s subtitled English translation at one point when the song says “mientras se abrazan con sentimiento” they translate “con sentimiento” as consent, which would be “consentimiento”. Separated like that it means with feeling or emotion. They’re not embracing with consent (although consent is important, it’s not what this is about). They’re embracing with emotion or feeling.

There's an ongoing fan theory that the magic for the family came from Pedro and his sacrifice. That Casita actually embodies his soul and his hope is what kept the candle alive. Also, that he kissed his children before he sacrificed himself, and along with Alma's prayer, that's how they got their gifts. That the reason Mirabel didn't get a door is because she embodies the hope and future of the family. She's the Casita's next caretaker. If you notice, only Abuela Alma and Mirabel are the only ones that Casita talk to and it talks back and they understand. Sebastian Yatra is the singer of this song. ALSO, the break in the mountains was never there until the town broke apart. Nothing could really get in or out of the encanto. If you go back in the movie, when Mirabel is trying to get the candle, it shows the mountains beginning to split apart in the background. That's where Mirabel went when everyone was looking for her. The river was outside the mountains, where no one had went for 50 years. Now that the split is there, no one and nothing is stuck like they had been.

I find it interesting comparing the visual of Abuella's story during this song with the version of it you see at the beginning of the movie. The first version you see is very dulled down, I like to think of it as that's how baby Mirabel imagines the events as they are described to her in child friendly fashion. And then you see it as it really was, and it's so much more intense.

Would you two react to the english translation they play during the credits and compare the differences and nuances of meaning? I think that would be awesome!

This song always reminds me of the civil war in El Salvador, quite sad.

You guys mentioned it beautifully and how they had to break away. The song is about 2 caterpillars. Caterpillars can be together but they can't be together to grow. They have to form their own chrysalis to become butterflies. It's very heartbreaking

I think it would really help the flow of the video if you wouldn't stop the song all the time. Maybe listen to it completely and then breaking down the meaning in a 2nd round?

This^ Listen then comment. It's borderline irritating to have someone stopping a video so many times.

This movie is absolutely beautiful. I've seen every Disney movie ever and I'd put encanto up with the best of all time, it's up there with Aladdin, the lion king and Beauty and the beast. My emotions were running crazy the whole movie but this scene made me cry my eyes out, it still makes me cry after watching it about 15 times
