How Iranian F-5s Intercepted an Iraqi MiG-25, 1986

During the Iran-Iraq war, F-5 played an extremely important role. It was used by Iran for various tasks, including CAS, interdiction and Combat Air Patrols. Iraq on the other hand operated various Soviet aircraft including MiG-25. The type's high speed made it useful for tasks such as high-altitude bombing. MiG-25s were also used in an attempt to interrupt airline traffic between Iran and Turkey. But, Iraqi MiG-25s returning from such mission had to conserve fuel and that's when they became vulnerable. A lowly F-5E whose top speed is about one half of the MiG's would get a chance to become a Foxbat killer.

Those 25RBs are actually my first ever memory of a fighter. I was born in one of the cities west of Iran directly located on the Iranian MSR between Tehran and Khuzestan province, that made us a constant destination for Iraqi bomber visits and also ballistic missiles, to the west of our city was a tall ridge and below it there was a decommissioned firing range few times a football field in size, the city folk were using it as a refuge everytime the siren was alarmed for the air attack, since it was directly below the ridge and Iraqis usually came from west there was little chance for any bombs to fall over there, anyway, one afternoon when I was like 3 years old, my family took me there during an air raid, there I saw it, this huge silver bird passed over the ridge and over my head, two massive pillars of fire coming out of it, it boomed like nothing I had ever heard, dived into the city and dropped some bombs to the Eastern fields where to road toward khuzestan was passing through, then it just zoomed up, rolled over with yellow tint of the setting sun reflecting back from it and despite the entire sky that was filled with green and red tracers, it was gone... unharmed and untouched... the entire event took like few seconds to conclude but it carved such a clear picture in my mind, I was awed with the experience and I became an aviation fan right then and there, I remained as such ever since...

Thank you very much for this great video. I am iranian and I lived in Tabriz in my childhood. The war began as I was 2 yo. Our city was strategically a very important place because of the 2nd TFB, radar stations and air defence systems, oil refinery, military bases and etc. Therfore our city suffered a huge number of iraqi air raids. The iraqis bombed and hit the houses, hospitals, markets, gas stations, universities and schools in cold blood. I have seen a lot of horrible scenes as a child and I am still tramatized by them. But eventually many of those iraqi pilots were hunted down by the islamic regime's militias in iraq after 2003. As many of other boys, I wanted to be a fighter pilot as I grew up, but I became a doctor! 😂😂

I still have quite a few of his books to read and I'm looking forward to that! The kill credit part is kind of a grey zone. Sometimes, air forces didn't count airplanes that landed but were written off as combat losses. The final result is still there, though. Thanks for commenting!

As for the vulkan , it sure promises to improve things and I believe it will be an improvement. How much exactly, it is too soon to tell.

He approached to the Mig 25, visually saying to the mig pilot you follow me.. but he didn’t responding.. after a while f5 turns back to the base due to the low fuel problem.. @@showtime112 I think you might be correct. I remember reading in the book "Clashes" that in the past (ie, Vietnam era) USAF tactical doctrine was so rigid, unlike the Navy's, particularly after the establishment of Top Gun. The flight/section leader was almost always the only designated shooter and the wingmen were there to protect the leader. It had been said that at the time a flight of 4 USAF Phantoms actually had less firepower compared to a section of Navy Phantoms since only the leader can shoot. Since most Iranian air force pilots at the time were originally trained by the USAF when they were still using this doctrine,, perhaps they inherited this tactical rigidity too? Perhaps that's why the leader didn't give the wingman a chance. Perhaps it simply didn't occur to him that he could have told the wingman to engage.

@@i.setyawan I read the same thing about the comparison of USAF and USN tactics but somewhere else. Your suggestion might be right. I don't know when the Iranian Colonel was trained or did he go to the USA, but since he was already that senior in rank, it might have happened in the 60s.

Iraqi Mig-25RB was a specialized bomber version able to carry 8 * 500kg bombs coupled with onboard computer the pilot was able to toss these heavy bombs a safe distance away from target and still hit then turn around and head home with very high speed, making it impossible for Iranians to catch them. Thanks to the Mig-25s fuel capacity it had the range to comfortably fly all the way to the Iranian capitol Tehran and other cities far away from the border.

The Iranian AIM-54 phoenix missiles wasn't active as well due to the same reason above. All in all the Iranian F-14s wasn't big deal at all nor represent any real threat to the Iraqi air force or it's pilots but opposite it was an easy hunting, it have been shoot down many time by Iraqi MIG-21s and even SU-22 not to mention the victories of Mirage F-1s and MIG-23s.
