It really just depends which part of the song you're talking about. I know how to play the entire song. the intro is pretty easy and a lot of fun actually, the verses are even easier as long as you can hit a hammer-on without moving any of your other fingers. but as soon as you start getting into the solo it starts to get very technical, Slash used a lot of bends, pull-offs hammer-ons, slides even a light sweep pick and blended it all together perfectly. One little mistake can really throw it off. It's not the hardest solo for sure but definitely isn't easy either. all together I would say you need to be an average-pro guitar player before playing it.

I actually wrote this song and never got credit. I was visiting LA one day and this guy with a top hat was outside crying, and i was like, what's the problem sweet child, and he was like, i just can't play the guitar its too hard. and i was like, start with something easy like this, and i played a little cross pattern (it was my first time with a guitar), and i said just do that and some day you'll be good. well later that year I see that same guy on tv. its ok though, i'm satisfied just knowing i helped him reach his full potential

It makes me feel so good to hear a great guitarist say that he really didn't like the song even though he wrote the main riff, sometimes a song just doesn't go where you expect it too when you come up with that first good riff. Sometimes I will have a part that I think is killer but after putting it to live drums it takes the song in a different direction, its up to you as the song writer to use that and build upon it, I just can't believe sweet child of mine was that song in his mind.

I've always been trying to play this lick with my pinky & it's been almost impossible for years. I could never get the Tempo or keep the fretboard quiet the way I was trying to do it with the added pinky doing the majority of the work. Now seeing u play it, it makes sense as to why I could never get it correctly. I had a friend & when we were kids, he could play it with no problem, but sadly he took his life & ever since then I have always tried to practice it. Hoping that 1 day I would get it down. Now seeing you actually do it. It looks like it will be so much easier now that I won't be trying to add the pinky. Thanks man. Hopefully my friend will finally be able to look down & see me not butcher ur intro, sooner than later. God bless. And if anyone is reading this & thinking about taking your own life or someone else's, Please don't man. Just pick up a guitar & play out what your feeling man. I've beaten my guitar over the years when I'm feeling bad. My Guitar has helped me work thru so many good & completely horrible situations. Just pick up an instrument, any instrument man. Please Play.

Odd, in his book Slash said that he and Steven were at a guitar store and as a gag, Slash started playing music that sounded like it belonged in a carnival. Adler looked at Slash and said something to the effect of, "hey that sounds really cool, you flesh that out." Oh well, I guess the origin is immaterial. The song is with us and it's one of the best ballads ever.

Slash is really an underrated guitarist. He is no where near Eddie Van Halen, although Eddie is, in my opinion, the only guitarist that is worthy of being compared to Hendrix. Slash is a great guitarist that doesn't necessarily showcase his full capability in songs. Slash knows how to take a backseat to really demonstrate his band mates' skill, like Duff. Slash is a fantastic guitarist that is ageless. His solo albums really demonstrate how he can take a back seat to showcase the band but at the same time be so prominent. He is a fantastic guitarist, he just doesn't have the same playing style as Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, or Stevie Ray Vaughn where the guitar almost over powers the song. With that being said, I'm not talking shit about any of those guys, they are amazing guitarists. It's just Slash has a somewhat different playing style which leads people to believe he is not as great of a guitarist as he really is. Don't believe me? Look up "Hold On" off his solo album, really demonstrates and reiterates what I'm talking about. Slash is easily a top 10 guitarist.

This is why I respect Slash so much, he really does showcase all of the others above himself, and then comes on with his solos. Like Todd Dammit Kerns, one of the best live Bassists ive seen, so energetic and Slashs songs really showcase his talents.

+Mike McAndrew I hear younger people say Hendrix wasn't all that great, but you have to put it all in context. When Hendrix came onto the scene, there was Nothing to compare him to. He blew Everyone away, and had folks like Clapton, Beck, The Beatles and many, many others in awe of his talent. I feel blessed to have been around when Eddie Van Halen came out with his first album. I can only imagine what it was like to hear Hendrix in the 60's. That must have been something special.

he's very humble. he was the core of all of those songs. none of those guys can do it without him but he can without them which is why velvet revolver was also great.

This is one of my favorites songs so far. It been almost teen years that I haven’t go to my country and I know this song is mostly about a pretty and a loved woman, but then the other part it’s what remind me my country. Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 an Island with Blue skies, a place where I spend and had nice warmer place to play and enjoy it for my self and you can have an idea of what I mean 🥲🔥

No one ever mentions the chords for the song being one of the most important thing to make it awesome, so many nice changes really allow for the epic solo to be what it is. Take the same solo and play it over 3 chords in the right key and it's still never gonna happen work so well. 👌👍

The story I heard about it is the riff came from trying to make some producers laugh at a studio. They came walking in and he was trying to play something really sappy and cheesy to make them laugh, but they ended actually liking it. I don't remember where I read that....

I wonder what his real name is ? maybe he has transcended above a normal identity and on his every contract or legal document he just writes Slash and nobody would ever dare question that because he is the one and only slash, he doesn't need a regular name. And he's allowed to wear glasses all the time and anywhere even in church !! and always with a high hat which in some way makes him look like he travels with a carnival !!

For everyone say sweet child o mine is easy.... I know how to play the entire song. The intro is pretty easy and a lot of fun actually. The verses are even easier as long as you can hit a hammer-on without moving any of your other fingers. As soon as you start getting into the solo it starts to get very technical, Slash used a lot of bends, pull-offs hammer-ons, slides even a light sweep pick and blended it all together perfectly. One little mistake can really throw it off. It's not the hardest solo for sure but definitely isn't easy either. all together I would say you need to be an average-pro guitar player before playing it.

Yes, i agree, solo part is very technically, u cant even be the same As slash pick the tone he has made in this solo section.

Just to think about it it was composed by one guy..Also its not really that "difficult" I consider myself a low level medium player and I can play it, but its only because of all the times I had to practice
@Suzumebachigr

@@vlad.the.impaler. well i mean...i play it too...but can you REPLICATE it as close as you can? ONLY THEN you will see it has so many details that make it even more difficult...playing the notes is one thing....expressing them as Slash does on the recording.....another story.THAT'S what people dont get... Most of the covers i see , they bend 4 times at one specific point of the solo while Slash does 5 bends squished on perfect timing....he bends and vibrato-es, 1 1/2 bend at the end....all those things are important...one does not simply play the notes and claims he can play it.
